Facilitating Return To Work Among Individuals With Mental Illness Through Occupational Therapy Interventions, Cleo Miller, Blakelee Jordan

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

The side effects of mental illness can affect areas of occupation, including: play, leisure, work, social participation, activities of daily living, etc. (Brown & Stoffel, 2011). Through collaboration with Riverview Psychiatric Center (RPC) in Augusta, Maine, as well as Maureen Martin OTR/L, an evaluation of relevant research was conducted to determine occupational therapy’s (OT) roll in the process of returning to work (RTW) for clients newly discharged from an inpatient psychiatric facility. This evaluation devised three themes: personal factors related to RTW; assessment tools & frameworks used to guide intervention; and OT interventions that can facilitate RTW. Research suggests that …

Improving Safety On The Road Through Occupational Therapy Intervention, Katherine Uschmann, Zachary Childs

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

As the U.S. population ages, increasing the likelihood of impaired fitness-to-drive, the topic of road safety holds strong interest among numerous professionals. The field of occupational therapy (OT) affirms the importance of community mobility in supporting overall health and well-being. OT practitioners who encounter clients with questionable driving ability should refer them to driving specialists. However, the question remains what kind of interventions may help clients with cognitive decline who have the potential to return to safe driving. This project’s evidence search revealed a wide range of interventions that show promise including: classroom education (especially when augmented by on-road training), …

A Protocol Paper On The Preservation Of Identity: Understanding The Technology Adoption Patterns Of Older Adults With Age-Related Vision Loss (Arvl), Colleen E. Mcgrath

Occupational Therapy Publications

There are a growing number of older adults with age-related vision loss (ARVL) for whom technology holds promise in supporting their engagement in daily activities. Despite the growing presence of technologies intended to support older adults with ARVL, there remains high rates of abandonment. This phenomenon of technology abandonment may be partly explained by the concept of self-image, meaning that older adults with ARVL avoid the use of particular technologies due to an underlying fear that use of such technologies may mark them as objects of pity, ridicule, and/or stigmatization. In response to this, the proposed study aims to understand …

Journal of Refugee & Global Health

In 2015, over 21 million refugees were displaced worldwide. A significant issue faced by this population is occupational deprivation – being deprived of engagement in meaningful activities. Despite this being a global problem, information on interventions that address occupational deprivation has not been synthesized. To bridge this gap, we conducted a scoping review to examine interventions that can be used when working with refugees who face this issue. For our methods, we used a five-step framework and reviewed interventions using the following databases: PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar. Initial searches yielded 191 studies, 7 of which were retained. Community-based …

Effect Of Ability To Cross Midline On Performance Of Handwriting, Lindsey Richmond, Michaela Marks Mar 2019

Effect Of Ability To Cross Midline On Performance Of Handwriting, Lindsey Richmond, Michaela Marks

Occupational Therapy Graduate Student Evidenced-Based Research Reviews

Background

In the school setting, occupational therapists work with students to develop or improve handwriting skills, such as letter legibility, to support educational participation (Case-Smith, 2002). Handwriting is compromised of many essential skills and clinicians focus specifically on areas including motor planning, upper extremity range of motion, and bilateral integration (Giroux, Woodall, Weber, & Bailey, 2012) which are related to the ability to cross midline. Crossing body midline is the ability to reach across the center of one's body, which is essential for many everyday tasks.

Assessing And Predicting Safe Power Mobility Use In Adults, Vannessa Valadez, Cally Mcshane

Occupational Therapy Graduate Student Evidenced-Based Research Reviews

Background:

The current body of knowledge is lacking criteria for vision, cognition, and psychological functioning and how they affect power wheelchair use. Assessment and training is a common issue for all clinicians working in the field during powered mobility rehabilitation. Research has shown that the skills required for safe powered wheelchair driving are consistent with the skills needed for safe automobile driving (Massengale et al., 2005).

For the first time instead of using task skills, process skills were introduced as part of a powered mobility assessment with the development of the Assessment of Learning Powered mobility (ALP) tool.

Benefits And Risks Of Botulinum Toxin-A Injections For Tone Management, Brittany Perlaki, Kate Soens Mar 2019

Benefits And Risks Of Botulinum Toxin-A Injections For Tone Management, Brittany Perlaki, Kate Soens

Occupational Therapy Graduate Student Evidenced-Based Research Reviews

Background Information:

Botulinum Toxin-A (BoNT/A) is being used as an adjunct to therapy to reduce focal spasticity, increase range of motion (ROM), manage pain, improve function, and possibly delay surgical intervention (Hoare & Imms, 2004). BoNT/A inhibits acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction resulting in temporary denervation and decreased muscular activity. Reinnervation eventually restores muscle function. Adverse effects include excessive weakness and atrophy of injected muscle, unintended weakness in adjacent muscles, and immunoresistance to BoNT/A (Ghasemi, Salari, Khorvash, & Shaygannejad, 2013).
