The world continues to see dramatic increases in the numbers of refugees as new humanitarian crises emerge. Once approved by a host nation, the resettlement process begins. To facilitate successful resettlement, a collaborative partnership between a refugee resettlement agency and a university occupational therapy program has continued to successfully serve the needs of the partnership’s three key stakeholders; the organization; the individual refugee or family; and the clinical training of occupational therapy students. • First Step Act (2018) reduces minimum sentencing for populations such as nonviolent drug offenders.2

To test the efficacy of a collaborative intervention to lower hemoglobin A1c levels (HbA1c) in older African Americans with Type 2 diabetes (DM), Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), and suboptimal medication adherence and glycemic control.

Aims:

1. To reduce HbA1c level by 0.5% at 6 and 12 months.
2. To increase MEMS-measured adherence to an oral DM medication at 6 and 12 months.

Hypotheses:

1. Fifty-five percent of intervention participants, compared to 25% of control participants, will have a reduction in HbA1c of 0.5% at 6 months (short term effect) and 12 months (maintenance effect).

This case study describes the pivotal role of technology in developing a community of practice (COP) designed for post professional occupational therapists that enabled doctoral students, alumni and faculty to share information and insights about topics, initiatives and research critical to the Occupational Therapy field. The COP evolved through ongoing development of the post-professional occupational therapy doctorate (PPOTD) program at Jefferson University in Philadelphia.

Cerebrovascular disorders represent the third leading cause of mortality and second major cause of long-term disability in North America (3). Patients who arrive at the emergency room within 3 hours of their first symptoms tend to have less disability 3 months after a stroke than those who received delayed care (4). Health literacy is a significant factor impacting the efficacy of healthcare services. Initiatives related to health literacy demonstrate that OTs have unique opportunities to promote health literacy and facilitate its integration into practice. It is therefore critical to explore ways in which health literacy content can be incorporated into entry-­‐level OT curricula. Doing so will help ensure that future practitioners are prepared to meet key standards related to health literacy, including those established by ACOTE.
