Periarticular Dextrose Prolotherapy For Patients With Primary Knee Osteoarthritis: A Casereport And Literature Reviewarticle, Yen-Jou Ho, Yao-Jen Chen, Chi-Chung Ho, Sheng-Wei Zeng, Su-Ju Tsai, Long-Wei Dai

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a common disease that primarily afflicts older adults. The mainstream management of knee OA involves integrative practice, including patient education, weight reduction, exercise, pharmacological therapy, and non-pharmacological modalities. However, prolotherapy with hypertonic dextrose via either intra-articular or periarticular injection, or a combination of both techniques, has become a strong evidence-based treatment or adjuvant therapy that may be used in addition to conservative management. In the literature, two studies have compared the effects of intra-articular and periarticular prolotherapy for knee OA and reveal comparable effects. In addition, the periarticular approach has fewer side effects and post-injection pain. …

Risk Of Knee Osteoarthritis Associated With High Heel Use, Emily Carlson Oct 2020

Risk Of Knee Osteoarthritis Associated With High Heel Use, Emily Carlson

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

The objective of this study is to summarize literature regarding the relationship between high heel use and development of knee osteoarthritis. Knee osteoarthritis is a progressively degenerative disease commonly observed in women with well documented biological and environmental risk factors. Deviations in walking mechanics caused by walking in high heels result in compressive forces on the medial aspect of the knee joint consistent with degenerative changes in the cartilage indicative of knee osteoarthritis. Frequent high heel wearing may also degrade the knee joint capsule, resulting in pain. Due to genetic predisposition, women are already at high risk for knee osteoarthritis …

Is Home-Based, High-Intensity Interval Training Cycling Feasible And Safe For Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis? Study Protocol For A Randomized Pilot Study, Justin W L Keogh, Josephine Grigg, Christopher J Vertullo

Justin Keogh

BACKGROUND:

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease affecting the knee joint of many middle-aged and older adults. As OA symptoms typically involve knee pain and stiffness, individuals with knee OA are often insufficiently physically active, have low levels of physical function, and are at increased risk of other comorbidities and reduced quality of life. While moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) cycling is often recommended, little is known about the feasibility, safety, and benefits of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) cycling for this population, even though the feasibility, safety, and benefits of HIIT have been demonstrated in other chronic disease groups.

A Comparison Between The Patellofemoral Function Scale And The Lequesne Index In Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis, Wei-Jang Yen, Tzy-Fang Chu, Ta-Shen Kuan, Mao-Huan Hung, Chang-Zern Hong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Numerous therapeutic approaches are currently used to treat knee osteoarthritis. The relative efficacy of these approaches to the treatment of individual knees with osteoarthritis is not well understood. The main reason is that therapeutic outcome studies in osteoarthritis had been impeded by the lack of an objective, reproducible method for grading osteoarthritis of individual knee in order to compare the severity of the osteoarthritis between the two different sides. The Lequesne index has been used in most therapeutic trials on osteoarthritis of weight bearing joints. However, the ability of the Lequesne index to assess the status of individual knees with …
