Performance-based outcome measures are used by clinical and research communities to identify health risks, assess change in physical function over time, and assess the success of treatment. With the onset of COVID-19, remote assessments were sought as alternatives to in-person testing, however there is inadequate literature on the validity of remote performance-based outcome measurement to assess physical function. Current literature is limited to small cohort studies, and none take advantage of novel comparison of agreement methodology. Respiratory deficits after C2 hemisection (C2Hx) have been well documented through single-sex investigations. Although ovarian sex hormones enable enhanced respiratory recovery observed in females 2 wk post-C2Hx, it remains unknown if sex impacts spontaneous respiratory recovery at chronic time points. We conducted a longitudinal study to provide a comprehensive sex-based characterization of respiratory neuromuscular recovery for 8 wk after C2Hx. We recorded ventilation and chronic diaphragm electromyography (EMG) output in awake, behaving animals, phrenic motor output in anesthetized animals, and performed diaphragm muscle histology in chronically injured male and female rodents. The purpose was to explore quadriceps electromechanical function (quadriceps latency) during gait after anterior cruciate ligament injury as a predictor for radiographic knee osteoarthritis 6-years after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Change in latency after preoperative physical therapy was also examined.

Methods

Quadriceps latency (time between peak knee moment and quadriceps electromyography) was calculated before preoperative physical therapy (2.4 [0.5–7.5] months after anterior cruciate ligament injury) and after preoperative physical therapy in 24 athletes. Participants were dichotomized into osteoarthritis (Kellgren and Lawrence grade ≥ 2) and non-osteoarthritis groups at 6-years. Understanding post-stroke changes in skeletal muscle oxidative metabolism and microvascular reactivity could help create therapeutic targets that optimize rehabilitative interventions. Due to disuse atrophy, we hypothesized that basal muscle oxygen consumption rate and microvascular endothelial function would be impaired in the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle of the affected leg of chronic stroke survivors compared with the nonaffected leg and versus matched controls. Fifteen chronic stroke survivors (10 females) and 15 matched controls (9 females) completed this study. Background

Few studies have examined changes in skeletal muscle physiology post-stroke. This study examined changes in tissue oxygen saturation (StO₂) of the vastus lateralis (VL) muscle of stroke survivors and age-matched control participants during maximal and submaximal isometric contractions of the knee extensor muscles.

Objectives

We hypothesized that tissue oxygen desaturation (ΔStO₂) during knee extensor muscle contractions would be less in the VL in the paretic vs. the non-paretic and control legs.

Methods

This article aims to evaluate the Effectiveness of Blood Flow Restriction Exercise in Improving Quadriceps Strength in Patients with ACL Reconstruction. This project is a literature study in narrative form. The background for conducting this research is the high incidence of ACL tears, ranging from 78 to 81 cases per 100,000 population worldwide in a year. The most common surgical treatment provided is ACL reconstruction. Quadriceps strength reduction after 6 months post-operation reaches 20% compared to pre-operation. Musicians face many musculoskeletal-related injuries due to overuse and repetitive motions (Gembris et al., 2020). These injuries can be mitigated by addressing posture as well as methods to prevent injuries and promote healthier playing. The proposed capstone program is occupationally based and developed to address posture and prevent musculoskeletal injuries among musicians. Occupational therapy can help musicians prevent and treat the development of postural asymmetries and musculoskeletal injuries that inhibit occupational participation and performance in playing their instruments (Ting et al., 2019).

This project was developed to provide an educational program to spread advocacy and education about the stigmatization of women with disabilities, who are unable to interact in sexual relationships and intimacy. Previous studies have examined sex differences in performance fatigability during isometric, isokinetic and controlled dynamic constant external resistance (DCER) fatiguing tasks (FT), however, whether those sex differences remain during maximal intended velocity (MIV) DCER muscle actions remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine the sex-related differences in the time course of fatigue, neuromuscular responses, and coactivation from the ipsilateral and contralateral limbs during MIV DCER muscle actions to failure at low versus high relative loads, as well as performance fatigability from pre- to post-testing.
