Background: Bedside thyroid cartilage palpation technique is a quick and non-invasive swallowing screening test. However, the correlation between thyroid cartilage movement and penetration/aspiration risks in stroke patients has not been conclusive to date. Therefore, we compared the result of videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) and bedside thyroid cartilage palpation to determine the penetration/ aspiration risks in stroke patients. Objective: We investigated the effectiveness of functional recovery after 2-week post-acute rehabilitation in elderly people with hip fractures. Design: We divided the patients (N = 129) into 2 groups: the post-acute care (PAC) group (N = 90) that received 2-week in-hospital rehabilitation and the control group (N =39) that were discharged immediately. Outcomes were measured according to the Barthel Index (BI) score. Results: The BI scores at 2 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months were higher in the PAC group than those in the control group, especially for transfer and mobility. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect and molecular mechanism of BPC 157 on migration of skeletal muscle cells. Objective: To examine rates of inpatient rehabilitation (IR) use in a nationwide amputee and determine factors associated with receiving rehabilitation services during acute admission. Methods: This research is a retrospective observational study. We sampled data from a nationally representative sample of 1,000,000 enrollees of the single-payer government-based National Health Insurance (NHI) program in Taiwan from 1996 to 2013. Claims data for rehabilitation during index admission after amputation were analyzed, and factors associated with IR use were identified. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in the regional fat distribution of body composition and the physical performance of adults with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) after progressive elastic band (EB) training. As part of a larger study examining relationships between taste properties and swallowing, we assessed the influence of genetic taster status (GTS) on measures of brain activity and swallowing physiology during taste stimulation in healthy men and women. Twenty-one participants underwent videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during trials of high-intensity taste stimuli. The precisely formulated mixtures included sour, sweet-sour, lemon, and orange taste profiles and unflavored controls. The present study examined the effects of selective digital deafferentation on the multi-finger synergies as a function of total force requirement and the number of digits involved in isometric pressing. 12 healthy adults participated in maximal and sub-maximal isometric pressing tasks with or without digital anesthesia to selective digits from the right hand. Our results indicate that selective anesthesia paradigm induces changes in both anesthetized (local) and non-anesthetized (non-local) digits’ performance, including: (1) decreased maximal force abilities in both local and non-local digits; (2) reduced force share during multi-finger tasks from non-local but not local digits; (3) decreased force error-making; …

Purpose

This study determined if anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL)/superior extensor ankle retinaculum (SEAR) thicknesses are related to dynamic balance in individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI).

Materials and Methods

The subjects were 14 males and 15 females (age=24.52±3.46 years). Ankle instability was assessed using the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT) with a cut off score of 25 to define two groups. SonoSite MTurbo (Fugifilm Sonosite, Inc.) musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS) unit was used to assess ATFL and SEAR thicknesses. Dynamic balance was measured with the Y Balance Test (YBT) and two NeuroCom balance tests.
