OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in the regional fat distribution of body composition and the physical performance of adults with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) after progressive elastic band (EB) training. METHODS: Participants were trained three times per week, performing three sets of 15-20 repetitions for each of the exercises with EB for 24 weeks. Changes in body composition were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Physical performance was assessed by determination of hand grip strength, the timed up-and-go test, the 30-second chair stand test, the 2-minute step test, and the Berg Balance Scale. RESULTS: Six participants …
Characterization Of The Effect Of Exercise Dose And Integrative Nonpharmacological Therapies In The Treatment Of Chronic Pain, Anna M. Polaski
Characterization Of The Effect Of Exercise Dose And Integrative Nonpharmacological Therapies In The Treatment Of Chronic Pain, Anna M. Polaski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chronic pain includes debilitating conditions affecting large populations of people throughout the world. These diseases are further complicated by comorbid psychological disorders which make chronic pain conditions difficult to treat. Nonpharmacological treatment options have more recently become an important mainstay of effective therapies and are currently being used to supplement or replace traditional pharmacological treatment methods. Exercise-based therapies in particular are of interest due to their demonstrated success in reducing pain symptoms as well as improving psychological outcomes. Dose is an important factor in being able to effectively prescribe treatments in the context of specific exercise interventions and specific pain …

Blood Flow Restriction Exercise: A Systematic Review Of The Literature, James M. Mckivigan
Blood Flow Restriction Exercise: A Systematic Review Of The Literature, James M. Mckivigan
College of Health & Human Services (TUN) Publications and Research
Blood flow restriction training is quickly gaining popularity in the United States. However, it is not without controversy. While there are many reported health benefits, there are equally as many risks. Most concerning is the lack of industry standardizations regarding cuff size and pressure. There is no required training to implement blood flow restriction training, which can be problematic when people with little knowledge practice this type of exercise. When blood flow is restricted, there is an impact on the cardiovascular system, nervous system, and muscular system. Damage can be done when blood flow is restricted with too much pressure …

Effect Of Food Intake On Rer Values During Submaximal Treadmill Exercise, Emily Dyment, Luke Beamer, Caitie Mayo, Alin Richards
EXSI 432/532: Research Methods in Exercise Science: Research Proposal Posters
The purpose of this experiment was to observe the extent to which food consumption prior to exercise affects fuel oxidation during submaximal exercise. It was hypothesized that individuals in the fasted state will utilize fat oxidation as the primary fuel source longer than individuals fed prior to exercise. This will be reflected by lower RER values throughout the graded exercise protocol.

Background: Patients with chronic pain are often crippled by psychological distress, depression and fear. These patients also can develop altered pain perception, with enhanced brain activity in pain-responsive regions and those associated with anxiety/depression. Exercise and meditation can impact pain-reducing brain areas and positively influence pain characteristics.
Purpose: To alter pain center activity by reducing the activation of the higher brain and deactivation of the lower brain with somatocognitive and meditative practices, with secondary aim of reducing anxiety/depression and improve overall quality of life.
Methods: We conducted a pilot study on mentally competent adult women with stable chronic pain who …
Physiotherapy Is Associated With Improvements In Gait And Balance In Individuals With Cognitive Impairment: A Retrospective Analysis, Steven Jackson, Elbert Chen, Jason Phan
Physiotherapy Is Associated With Improvements In Gait And Balance In Individuals With Cognitive Impairment: A Retrospective Analysis, Steven Jackson, Elbert Chen, Jason Phan
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that individuals with cognitive impairment (CI) exhibit significant motor impairments; however, these motor impairments receive little treatment attention compared to more prominent CI. Moreover, there is a lack of evidence about physiotherapy (PT) in individuals with CI. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine if PT was effective at improving gait and balance in individuals with Alzheimer disease (AD), vascular dementia (VaD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). METHODS: Retrospective data of 173 individuals with CI conditions and an initial evaluation for PT were extracted from electronic records from January 2016 …
Adapting The Lifestyle-Integrated Functional Exercise Program For Medically Underserved Older Adults, Yi-Ling Hu
Adapting The Lifestyle-Integrated Functional Exercise Program For Medically Underserved Older Adults, Yi-Ling Hu
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Falls are a growing public health problem among the aging population. Structured exercise programs are effective in preventing falls, and many have been implemented for community-dwelling older adults in the U.S. However, low adherence rates for structured exercise are reported consistently for this population. The need to translate alternative evidence-based exercise programs the diverse older adult population is important. One promising alternative program, the Lifestyle-integrated Functional Exercise Program (LiFE), can significantly reduce falls but has not yet been implemented for diverse older adults residing in the US. To initiate the translation of LiFE, we targeted older adults residing in medically …

Efficacy Of Evidence-Based Exercise As A Treatment For Breast Cancer Related Lymphedema, Eric Kartevold, Katrina Maañao Perez, Malcolm Reed
School of Occupational Therapy Master's Capstone Projects (2016-2021)
Breast cancer related lymphedema (BCRL) of the upper extremity is a frequent sequela following axillary node dissection (AND). A recent meta-analysis by Gillespie et al. (2018), suggested a 21.4% incidence of chronic arm edema post breast cancer intervention. Gillespie et al. (2018) explained that because of a lack of diagnostic criteria for BCRL, incidence reports varied widely from less than 5% to over 50%.
The purpose of this review was to determine the efficacy of exercise in the self-management of BCRL, including the types and frequency of exercise. Protocols from 24 articles on the self-management of BCRL, including exercise as …

The Process Of Exercise Participation In The Community For Functional Recovery Post Formal Rehabilitation Among Survivors Of Stroke: A Grounded Theory Study, Nicole M. Evans
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The effects of stroke pose a challenge on independence and community participation, which are common goals among survivors of stroke during recovery. Exercises are implemented during rehabilitation services and have a profound effect on functional recovery; however, services are limited, where adherence levels to exercise post discharge are less than ideal. The aim of this research was to understand the process of exercise participation for functional recovery among community living survivors of stroke following discharge from formal rehabilitation. Findings of this constructivist grounded theory study provided insight into the phases leading to exercise commitment –contact with a healthcare provider, desire …

Yoga-Specific Enhancement Of Quality Of Life Among Women With Breast Cancer: Systematic Review And Exploratory Meta-Analysis Of Randomized Controlled Trials, Daline El-Hashimi, Kevin M. Gorey
Social Work Publications
Physical activities during and after cancer treatment have favorable psychosocial effects. Increasingly, yoga has become a popular approach to improving the quality of life (QoL) of women with breast cancer. However, the extant synthetic evidence on yoga has not used other exercise comparison conditions. This meta-analysis aimed to systematically assess yoga-specific effects relative to any other physical exercise intervention (eg, aerobics) for women with breast cancer. QoL was the primary outcome of interest. Eight randomized controlled trials with 545 participants were included. The sample-weighted synthesis at immediate postintervention revealed marginally statistically and modest practically significant differences suggesting yoga’s potentially greater …
