There has been extensive research by many in the past into body fat percentage measurement methods as well as these measurements. It is historically proven that the common method of BMI is not a good measurement of this, as it is often found that male and female college athletes BMI are significantly higher than non-athletes (Ode et al., 2007). With this in mind, there were many other methods that proved to be more reliable when compared to the golden standard, the bod pod. These methods include bioelectrical impedance (BIA) measurements, and waist-to-hip ratio. For our study, we decided to use …

EDS is a genetic connective tissue disorder which can be classified 13 different ways. Some key features which distinguish this disease are joint hypermobility, skin fragility, joint pain without arthritis, and rupture of blood vessels and internal organs. This pathology can present itself at any age, and no particular type is more common than another. Ethnicity, race, and gender do not seem to determine prevalence of this disease. 1 in every 20,000 people are diagnosed with classical EDS (Ghali et al., 2019). The process of diagnosing a patient includes examination of medical history, skin and musculoskeletal system, and other factors …

In recent years, multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) has been hugely beneficial for cognitive neuroscience by making new experiment designs possible and by increasing the inferential power of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG), and other neuroimaging methodologies. In a similar time frame, “deep learning” (a term for the use of artificial neural networks with convolutional, recurrent, or similarly sophisticated architectures) has produced a parallel revolution in the field of machine learning and has been employed across a wide variety of applications. Traditional MVPA also uses a form of machine learning, but most commonly with much simpler techniques based on …

Perceptions Of Water Competencies, Drowning Risk And Aquatic Participation Among Older Adults, Teresa Stanley, Kevin Moran
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
New Zealand has an aging population and, despite falling drowning tolls in all other age groups (WSNZ, 2019c), older adults have continued to drown in both increasing numbers and proportion. The reasons for this are not well understood since very little drowning research has focused on older people. A water safety survey (N = 389) seeking information on older adults’ aquatic recreational practices and perceptions of safety was conducted at the end of the summer season, 2019. Most adults (86%, n = 335) reported some aquatic activity in the previous year, but those aged 65+ years (66%) were significantly …

Surfboard Paddling Technique And Neuromechanical Control: A Narrative Review, Wynand Volschenk, Zachary J. Crowley-Mchattan, John W. Whitting, Rudi A. Meir, Alec K. Mckenzie
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Surfboard paddling is an essential activity when surfing. Research investigating surfboard paddling, especially as it pertains to neuromechanical control and techniques used, is limited. Previous research made use of swim ergometers to examine surfboard paddling demands. The validity of using swim ergometers in surfboard paddling research and training deserves further analysis. To establish ecologically valid findings, researchers have begun to use swim flumes and still-water paddling environments to investigate paddling efficiency and technique. This emerging body of research has reported that muscle activation patterns, intensities, and timings differ as surfers move through different paddle stroke phases. A deeper understanding of …

Standard magnetic resonance imaging approaches offer high-resolution but indirect measures of neural activity, limiting understanding of the physiological processes associated with imaging findings. Here, we used calibrated functional magnetic resonance imaging during the resting state to recover low-frequency fluctuations of the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO2). We tested whether functional connections derived from these fluctuations exhibited organization properties similar to those established by previous standard functional and anatomical connectivity studies. Seventeen participants underwent 20 min of resting imaging during dual-echo, pseudocontinuous arterial spin labeling, and blood-oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) signal acquisition. Participants also underwent a 10 min normocapnic and hypercapnic …

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications
Background: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is generally thought to spare primary sensory function; however, such interpretations have drawn from a literature that has rarely taken into account the variable cognitive declines seen in patients with AD. As these cognitive domains are now known to modulate cortical somato-sensory processing, it remains possible that abnormalities in somatosensory function in patients with AD have been suppressed by neuropsychological variability in previous research. Methods: In this study, we combine magnetoencephalographic (MEG) brain imaging during a paired-pulse somatosensory gating task with an extensive battery of neuropsychological tests to investigate the influence of cognitive variability on estimated …

Effect Of Blood Flow Restriction Training On Functional And Self-Reported Outcomes In Female Runners With Patellofemoral Pain, Lauren Nicole Erickson
Effect Of Blood Flow Restriction Training On Functional And Self-Reported Outcomes In Female Runners With Patellofemoral Pain, Lauren Nicole Erickson
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
Background: Patellofemoral pain (PFP) is the leading cause of lower extremity injury in female runners, significantly limiting running ability and becoming chronic in nearly 50% of the cases. This condition, which presents as pain around (peripatellar) or behind (retropatellar) the patella, is associated with significant weakness of the quadriceps and gluteal musculature, as well as altered movements mechanics. The challenge for clinicians is designing an effective treatment program to reduce pain and improve function without causing symptoms to flare. Blood flow restriction training (BFRT) is a relatively new training method within rehabilitation that involves placing a pressurized cuff to the …

Development Of A Field Expedient Screening Tool For The Coach To Identify Musculoskeletal Risk Factors In Baseball Players, Kyle Andrew Matsel
Development Of A Field Expedient Screening Tool For The Coach To Identify Musculoskeletal Risk Factors In Baseball Players, Kyle Andrew Matsel
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
Identification of musculoskeletal (MSK) injury risk factors in baseball players can be challenging particularly for youth and high school coaches. Many baseball coaches lack a sports medicine and/or strength and conditioning staff to assist with injury prevention initiatives. Given the extensive responsibilities in managing the team and preparing the players for athletic competition, little time remains to focus on injury prevention and arm care programs. Furthermore, assessment, diagnosis, and management of MSK impairments is outside the scope of practice and expertise of baseball coaches. However, educating and empowering the coach to efficiently screen their players for potentially injury producing MSK …
