Differential Behaviour Of Distinct Motoneuron Pools That Innervate The Triceps Surae, Josh W. Cohen, Taian M. Vieira, Tanya D. Ivanova, Jayne Garland

Kinesiology Publications

It has been shown that when humans lean in various directions, the central nervous system (CNS) recruits different motoneuron pools for task completion; common units that are active during different leaning directions, and unique units that are active in only one leaning direction. We used high-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG) to examine if motor unit (MU) firing behaviour was dependent on leaning direction, muscle (medial and lateral gastrocnemius; soleus), limits of stability, or whether a MU is considered common or unique. Fourteen healthy participants stood on a force platform and maintained their center of pressure in five different leaning directions. HD-sEMG …

Tummy Time In Infancy: Real-World Assessments And Associations With Developmental Outcomes In Early Childhood, Ketaki Inamdar Jan 2022

Tummy Time In Infancy: Real-World Assessments And Associations With Developmental Outcomes In Early Childhood, Ketaki Inamdar

Theses and Dissertations

Tummy time or awake, supervised, prone play is an important developmental play position in infancy. Engaging in more than 15 minutes of tummy time per day is associated with a lower risk of plagiocephaly, lower body mass index, and achievement of higher motor scores in full-term and at-risk preterm infants. However, there are significant gaps in the measurement of tummy time in current literature. Conventionally used subjective parent reports have not been validated against gold standard direct observation, and the feasibility and real-world validity of objective solutions such as wearable sensors has not been examined in full-term and at-risk preterm …

Neuroscience Articles

BACKGROUND: Integrating behavioral intervention into motor rehabilitation is essential for improving paretic arm use in daily life. Demands on therapist time limit adoption of behavioral programs like Constraint-Induced Movement (CI) therapy, however. Self-managed motor practice could free therapist time for behavioral intervention, but there remains insufficient evidence of efficacy for a self-management approach.

METHODS: This completed, parallel, five-site, pragmatic, single-blind trial established the comparative effectiveness of using in-home gaming self-management as a vehicle to redirect valuable therapist time towards behavioral intervention. Community-dwelling adults with post-stroke (>6 months) mild/moderate upper extremity hemiparesis were randomized to receive one of 4 different …

Neurophysiological And Psychological Characteristics Of Individuals With History Of Lateral Ankle Sprain, Katherine Bain Jan 2022

Neurophysiological And Psychological Characteristics Of Individuals With History Of Lateral Ankle Sprain, Katherine Bain

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

Lateral ankle sprain (LAS) is among the most common lower limb musculoskeletal injuries impacting both the general and sport populations. Even more problematic is that approximately 70% of individuals who sustain an LAS develop residual deficits. Of that subgroup, roughly 40% develop chronic ankle instability (CAI). Chronic ankle instability is a clinical diagnosis defined by the presence of ongoing impairments following the initial LAS which may include perceived instability, pain, mechanical instability, and episodes of giving way during physical activity. Not all who sustain multiple ankle sprains or experience residual deficits fit the clinical diagnosis criteria for CAI; yet may …

Size-Weight Illusion With A Squatting Task (Poster), Amanda Laron, Maryssa Becker, Mason Flores, Mikaela Raudsepp, Nicole Seidl, Robin Dorociak, Andrew Meszaros

Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy

Hypothesis:

The SWI will be observed during a squat movement, resulting in initially a larger GRF through the lower extremity on the side of the larger cube and more vertical displacement of the side of the bar with the large cube.

The bilateral GRF and bar displacement will become symmetrical after 10 repetitions.

Participants will initially predict the larger cube is heavier and after completing the squatting task will perceive the smaller cube as heavier.

Physiotherapy Papers and Journal Articles

Chronic nonspecific low back pain (CNSLBP) is a complex and multifaceted problem. The following Perspective Piece tries to help make sense of this complexity by describing a model for the development and maintenance of persistent low back pain that integrates modifiable factors across the biopsychosocial spectrum. The Fit-for-Purpose model (FFPM) posits the view that chronic nonspecific low back pain represents a state in which the person in pain holds strong and relatively intransient internal models of an immutably damaged, fragile, and unhealthy back, and information that supports these models is more available and trustworthy than information that counters them. This …

Critical Race Theory And Cultural Taxation As Frameworks For Analyzing The Lack Of Faculty Diversity In Academic Allied Health Professions Programs, Jaime González Jan 2022

Critical Race Theory And Cultural Taxation As Frameworks For Analyzing The Lack Of Faculty Diversity In Academic Allied Health Professions Programs, Jaime González

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

Allied health professions, including faculty within allied health professions education programs in the United States, are woefully misrepresentative of the US population. Regarding race and ethnicity, there is a substantial and unjust underrepresentation of persons from systemically excluded culture groups, including Latina/o, Black, Indigenous, and LGBTQ+ communities. There may also exist a relative underrepresentation by gender among faculty, especially above the junior academic ranks, and among leaders and administrators in academic allied health professions programs. These disparities in race, ethnicity, and gender among faculty yield significant consequences downstream regarding workforce diversity, and by extension, health inequities among persons from systemically …
