This qualitative study aimed to address the gap in the research related to end-of-life counseling by exploring the experiences of counselors working with clients at end of life. While counseling literature and education are lacking regarding end of life, many counselors will work alongside clients approaching death. Oral language is one skill known to support written language development. Story-telling or narrative skills are important oral language skills that have been found to improve with explicit teaching and predict academic outcomes. This study investigated impact of the oral narrative intervention on the oral and written language skills of first-grade children. In a cross-over design with 63 participants from two schools, whole class intervention in one class per school was conducted in twelve 25–30-minute sessions over three weeks either during phase 1 or phase 2 of the study while the other class in each school completed their business-as-usual curriculum. …

Purpose: This study examined lifespan changes in maximum tongue strength, swallowing time, and masseter activity during swallowing. It provides normative data with which to compare clinical assessments of orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMD) and oropharyngeal dysphagia (OPD).

Method: 409 healthy participants without identified OMD or OPD (ages 5 – 79 years) provided instrumental measures of tongue strength and electromyographic measurements for oropharyngeal transit time and masseter activity during swallows of four boluses. Participants were placed in three broad age groups (5 – 15, 16 – 59, 60 – 79) for cross-sectional analysis.

This study provides an investigation into the effectiveness of a modified version of Phonomotor Treatment (PMT) for treating apraxia of speech (AOS) in a telepractice model. A single-subject design was utilized to provide treatment to a participant with post-stroke apraxia of speech and aphasia. Treatment occurred two hours a day, five days a week, for four weeks. Targets were selected specifically for the participant after initial probing and testing. Data was taken to measure the chosen targets for acquisition, maintenance, and generalization. Introduction: Post-operative frenectomy care is often focused on active wound management (AWM) and followed by neuromuscular re-education (NMR). The standard practices of AWM are varied amongst providers. AWM is often expected to be performed by caregivers who have little to no experience with AWM. In contrast, NMR is individualized to patient needs and has been emerging in external evidence as a beneficial modality for the functional implications of tethered oral tissues (TOTs). Background: Achondroplasia is a genetic condition that results in several orofacial and physical manifestations that predispose patients to dental, breathing, and sleep issues.

Case Description: This report details the case of a 2-year-old girl with achondroplasia, malocclusion, speech and breathing dysfunction, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Treatment involved using a myofunctional device that required chewing twice per day, two simple tongue exercises, speech-language therapy, chiropractic therapy, and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) for 24 months. Throughout the treatment period, the patient demonstrated significant improvements in her sleep, breathing, dental occlusion, speech, and overall confidence.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between perceived emotional intelligence and the reported use of cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression. We also investigated the possible effects of age on the aforementioned variables. The total sample consisted of 379 people (158 men, 220 women, 1 unreported). Expiratory muscle strength training (EMST) is increasingly being used to treat voice, cough, and swallowing deficits in a wide range of conditions. However, a multitude of aero-resistive EMST models are commercially available, and the absence of side-by-side comparative data interferes with clinicians’ ability to assess which model is best suited to a particular client’s needs. The primary aim of this research was to test and compare the pressure and flow parameters of six currently available EMST models to help inform clinical decision making.

This conceptual overview offers a comprehensive overview of systemic pathways that negatively impact the mental health of Black Men throughout their lives. Our argument highlights the importance for counselors and mental health professionals to utilize a thorough social risk assessment that considers these pathways in order to effectively address the mental health needs of Black Men while fostering positive working relationships. This overview strongly advocates for the use of context and structural determinants when evaluating mental health symptoms. Without an appropriate understanding of social risk and determinants, counselors may inadvertently perpetuate disparities by decontextualizing symptomology, and reproducing racist discourse.

The purpose of the study was to examine experiences of students transitioning into graduate allied health programs within a public university in the United States. Researchers assessed students’ occupational adaptation as well as factors that facilitated and inhibited their transition. Researchers collected data using the Relative Mastery Scale (RMS) (George-Paschal, Krusen, & Fan, 2022) and a researcher-developed transition survey. Participants included 129 students from three allied-health professions. Researchers conducted a mixed ANOVA to explore differences in RMS ratings across three disciplines. Purpose: Poor oral health is a known predictor of aspiration pneumonia in vulnerable populations such as the elderly and chronically ill. This study examined the feasibility of using myofunctional devices during a 5-week intervention for the management of oral care and dysphagia for residents in a residential aged-care facility.

Method: Feasibility was determined through evaluation of study recruitment and retention rates, adherence to intervention, and resident and staff acceptability of the intervention. Thirteen residents, ages 74–99, participated in the intervention and 10 care staff completed feedback on post-intervention questionnaires.

Eliminating health disparities and achieving health equity are central to US national health objectives and the Military Health System’s “quadruple aim,” which has readiness as its core aim. Because military service members enjoy universal eligibility for health care, it is sometimes assumed that health disparities do not exist in the Department of Defense (DoD).
