The Government of India and the United States Agency for International Development began the Innovations in Family Planning Services Projects (IFPS) in Uttar Pradesh under the management of the State Innovations in Family Planning Services Agency (SIFPSA). IFPS’s objectives are to increase access to family planning (FP) services, improve the quality of health care services, and promote contraceptive use. While achieving these goals, the IFPS project will support service innovations in the public and nongovernmental sectors, and contraceptive social marketing mechanisms. Previous studies on Norplant® implants in Indonesia have shown that there are a substantial number of implant acceptors, providers, fieldworkers, and volunteers who are unaware of the basic facts about Norplant. In addition, information, education, and communication materials are lacking for providers, fieldworkers, volunteers, and clients. With these issues in mind, the Training and Development Center for Biomedical and Human Reproduction Studies of the National Family Planning Coordinating Board launched an Operations Research intervention study with Study Groups on Human Reproduction from Andalas University, Padang, West Sumatra, and Padjajaran University, Bandung, West Java, with support from the Population Council. This report presents the results of a survey of 899 DMPA acceptors who availed of injectable contraceptive services from public health facilities under the Philippine Department of Health's (DOH) DMPA Reintroduction Program. The survey is part of the DMPA Monitoring and Follow-up Studies sponsored by the Population Council’s Manila office in response to a request by the DOH to provide operations research support to the program. Depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), commonly known as Depo-Provera, is a three-month injectable contraceptive. At the request of the Indonesian National Family Planning Coordinating Board, the Population Council’s consultant team reviewed issues related to Norplant® implant service delivery in Indonesia and recommended specific areas for new initiatives, improvements, and further research. The team reviewed secondary sources on the subject and visited Indonesia from April 17–28, 1995. They talked with family planning (FP) officials and observers and made field visits to West Java and Yogyakarta. This pilot study conducted in Cairo and Minya examined the effects of improving the medical care and counseling of post-abortion patients in Egypt. A pre-test/post-test, no control group study design was used to measure the effects of an intervention that upgraded physicians' clinical and interpersonal communication skills for the care of post-abortion patients, including counseling and family planning (FP). The study's surveys utilized direct interviews with staff working in the OB/GYN wards, structured observations of treatment procedures and counseling of post-abortion patients, and interviews with patients prior to discharge. This report contains descriptions of 13 family planning (FP) projects recently implemented in Bangladesh. The results in terms of the contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) are analyzed to investigate the degree to which improved FP service delivery in Bangladesh can increase contraceptive use in the present status of demand, investigate the programmatic factors most associated with increased prevalence, and make these projects more widely known. Criteria for inclusion included coverage of a geographic area where household distribution of contraceptive supplies was available, and where at least one measurement of CPR has been made through credible survey efforts since July 1988. This study attempted to examine user perspectives regarding the desirability of the diaphragm as a contraceptive method when included among other methods distributed freely through a family planning (FP) clinic. It sought to introduce on an experimental basis, the diaphragm into an ongoing and well-established FP clinic to increase contraceptive choice. This was primarily a qualitative study aimed at understanding women's perceptions about the risks and benefits, the reasons for use of the diaphragm, and the practical difficulties of using it effectively. The Government of Egypt launched its national family planning (FP) program in 1966. The early phase was mainly supply oriented and aimed at ensuring wide distribution of contraceptives primarily through pharmacies to meet rising demand. Between 1988 and 1992 a number of additional sources of FP services appeared, with an increase in clinic-based services through both the private and public sectors. In 1992 about one-fourth of users relied on pharmacies to get their FP supplies compared to about one-half in 1988. This study has involved interviews with a randomly selected sample of 389 family planning (FP) acceptors from 20 barangays in Bukidnon province, Philippines. Respondents were currently married women who had either continued to use family planning (FP) since their initial acceptance (current users) or who had stopped using FP altogether (dropouts). Premised on the belief that the BHWs are important in improving the delivery of health and family planning (FP) services in the countryside, the study examined the factors that affect the performance of these health workers. The present study examined the impact of the Clinical Services Improvement (CSI) Project's provider training program on clients' long-term satisfaction and method use. A sample of 154 clients who received a family planning (FP) method in one of 30 CSI clinics were followed up over a period of 19 months through a series of home interviews. The interviews monitored clients' use of the FP method received at the clinic as well as their satisfaction with that method and the services at CSI. Since its introduction in the 1970s, the total number of active contraceptive users dramatically increased to 21 million couples. The government continuously tries to improve the quality of FP services. New developments in contraceptives at the international level have been monitored to assess the possibility of their application in Indonesia, to broaden the variety of available contraceptives. After five years of national programmatic use of Norplant® contraceptive implants, in 1992 the National Population and Family Planning Board (BKKBN) plans to implement a follow-up Use-Dynamics Study of implant users in West Java and West Sumatra Provinces, Indonesia. A Diagnostic Study was implemented in 1991 to prepare for that study prior to final approval, and to get some early insights into implant program operations in advance of final results from the main study.
