Factors Influencing Family Health History Collection Among Young Adults: A Structural Equation Modeling, Ming Li, Shixi Zhao, Yu Yu Hsiao, Oi Man Kwok, Tung-Sung Tseng, Lei Shih Chen

School of Public Health Faculty Publications

Family health history (FHH) can serve as an entry point for preventive medicine by providing risk estimations for many common health conditions. College is a critical time for young adults to begin to understand the value of FHH collection, and to establish healthy behaviors to prevent FHH-related diseases. This study seeks to develop an integrated theoretical framework to examine FHH collection behavior and associated factors among college students. A sample of 2670 college students with an average age of 21.1 years completed a web-based survey. Less than half (49.8%) reported actively seeking FHH information from their family members. Respondents’ knowledge …

Participation In Curriculum And Cultural Ambassador Group To Enhance Student Belongingness, Jake Tuft, Jacob Schvaneveldt

Annual Research Symposium

COVID-19 negatively impacted students' abilities to participate in live, in-person events; students were unable to interact with peers or build relationships critical to success and well-being. Quarantine, social distancing and video conferencing did not create this problem however, it simply amplified the fact that dental students seemingly lack camaraderie and a sense of belongingness. The Curriculum and Cultural Ambassador group was created to allow students to bond over shared goals in the hopes of improving their experiences within dental school. This group gives students the ability to “Be the Change” on campus and enact real-time change to foster a sense …

Using A Reconciliatory Model To Change Attitudes Towards Covid-19, Gabriella Hubble, Mark Rockwood, Jordan Willis Mar 2022

Using A Reconciliatory Model To Change Attitudes Towards Covid-19, Gabriella Hubble, Mark Rockwood, Jordan Willis

Annual Research Symposium

This research was designed to see if we were able to change university students’ attitudes about COVID-19 in regard to precautionary behaviors such as mask-wearing, social distancing and vaccinations using a reconciliatory model. The reconciliatory model has had success in evolution research and we wanted to assess its success here. Additionally, we wanted to test if students’ perception of the respectfulness and relatability of the presenter influenced a change in attitude. For our model, we created 6 different videos from various individuals. After watching the videos, participants filled out a survey about if/how the video changed their minds, and if/how …

Prediction Of Human Transcriptional Biomarkers For Severe Infection With Sars-Cov-2, Jeffrey Clancy, Brett Pickett Mar 2022

Prediction Of Human Transcriptional Biomarkers For Severe Infection With Sars-Cov-2, Jeffrey Clancy, Brett Pickett

Annual Research Symposium

Defining the human host factors associated with severe vs mild COVID-19 cases in infected individuals has become of increasing interest. Mining large numbers of public gene expression datasets is an effective way to identify genes that contribute to a given phenotype. Combining RNA-sequencing data with the associated clinical metadata describing disease severity can enable earlier identification of those patients who are at higher risk of developing severe COVID-19 disease. We consequently identified 356 public RNA-seq human transcriptome samples from the Gene Expression Omnibus database that had disease severity metadata. We then subjected these samples to a robust RNA-seq data processing …

Number Of Active Social Media Users As Predictors Of Hipaa Infringements, Alexander Sheppert, Taylor Purcell, Nathaniel Hill, David Sant

Annual Research Symposium

HIPAA Infringements Correlate Linearly with Number of Social Media Users.

Social media use has made information sharing much easier – including protected health information. Interestingly, as social media has become more popular over the years, HIPAA violations have also become more common.

The calculated R and P values suggest a strong correlation exists between social media use and HIPAA complaints.

Potential Cost Savings With Implementation Of Systemwide Rasburicase Protocol, Parker Gundersen, Adalyn Lee Mar 2022

Potential Cost Savings With Implementation Of Systemwide Rasburicase Protocol, Parker Gundersen, Adalyn Lee

Annual Research Symposium

Purpose: Tumor Lysis Syndrome is a condition that takes place when apoptosis in cancer cells occurs within a short time period. This condition can lead to organ dysfunction and even death. Rasburicase is used to treat high uric acid levels in patients that are experiencing tumor lysis syndrome and is expensive. Dosing and frequency of rasburicase varies across health care institutions. This project evaluated if adherence to a systemwide rasburicase protocol could help reduce drug waste and reduce costs across a healthcare system.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective data analysis reviewing rasburicase doses administered across Intermountain Healthcare over the course …

Perceptions And Practices Of Key Worker Stakeholder Groups In Hospital Animal- Assisted Intervention Programs On Occupational Benefits And Perceived Risks, Kathryn R. Dalton, William Altekruse, Peter Campbell, Kathy Ruble, Karen C. Carroll, Roland J. Thorpe Jr., Jacqueline Agnew, Meghan F. Davis

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

Background: Animal-assisted intervention (AAI) programs, used widely for patient benefit, have increasingly been used for healthcare workers (HCW) to reduce occupational stress. However, there are barriers to these programs which limit their utilization, for both patients and HCW, specifically infectious disease concerns. The aim of the research project is to identify barriers and facilitators to AAI program use for healthcare worker benefit, and determine knowledge, beliefs, and practices regarding infectious disease risk and control policies, in order to understand the contextual parameters of program implementation.

Methods: We collected perceptions of key stakeholders involved with hospital AAI programs (HCW and AAI …
