Rural Hospital Closure And Medicaid Expansion, Jason White Jan 2025

Rural Hospital Closure And Medicaid Expansion, Jason White

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Introduction: In the United States, hospitals in rural areas have been under financial pressure and have been closing at an increasing rate.  This reduces access to care for rural citizens.  The Affordable Care Act of 2010 was passed in order to increase access to medical care, partially through an optional expansion of Medicaid coverage to a larger percentage of the population.  As some states adopted the expansion and some states did not, an opportunity was created to examine the policy’s effect on rural hospital stability.

Purpose of the Study:  This study was designed to examine the effect of …

This study investigated the lived experiences of individuals living with HIV (PLWH) in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area of Texas during the COVID-19 pandemic, using an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) framework. The research examined the intersection of health, social dynamics, and psychological resilience among PLWH, who faced compounded vulnerabilities due to systemic inequities and the dual public health crises of HIV and COVID-19. Through semi-structured interviews with ten participants from diverse backgrounds, the study captured the profound impacts of disrupted healthcare systems, heightened stigma, and social isolation on this marginalized population. The findings reveal that the pandemic exacerbated existing inequities …

Bio-Preparedness In A Global Context: Multi-Site International Study Investigating Global Health Security Challenges In Egypt, Oman, And The United States, Rima M. Al Balushi

Theses & Dissertations

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed myriad vulnerabilities globally within public health systems, from inadequate bio-risk management in laboratories to overwhelming utilization of hospital resources and disparities in vaccine access and uptake. The Global Health Security Index (GHSI), which critically evaluates health security domains including health systems and risk environments, reports serious weaknesses in global health security. This dissertation aims to investigate critical aspects of global health security domains by examining factors impacting biosafety and biosecurity capacities in laboratories in Egypt, healthcare resource utilization in hospitals in Oman relating to acute respiratory infections (ARI), and COVID-19 vaccine uptake in the United States. …

Factors Influencing Patient Satisfaction With Zambia's National Health Insurance Scheme: A Systematic Literature Review Using Empirical Evidence From Nigeria And Ghana, Wesley Kapaya Mwambazi, Abubaker Qutieshat

Patient Experience Journal

Universal Health Coverage (UHC) has become important for African nations as they strive to provide equitable healthcare access to all citizens. Implementing a successful National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is crucial to achieving this goal. In pursuit of achieving UHC, Zambia launched the NHIS in 2019 with the ambitious goal of reaching 100% coverage by 2021. Some of those enrolled had reported varying levels of satisfaction with the NHIS services. Understanding patient satisfaction with NHIS-provided services is therefore essential for improving its implementation and enhancing NHIS patient satisfaction. Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic review of empirical studies from Nigeria and …

BACKGROUND: Team-based primary care (PC) enhances the quality of and access to health care. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) implements team-based care through Patient Aligned Care Teams (PACTs), consisting of four core members: a primary care provider, registered nurse (RN) care manager, licensed vocational nurse, and scheduling clerk. RNs play a central role: they coordinate patient care, manage operational needs, and serve as a patient point of contact. Currently, it is not known how varying levels of RN staffing on primary care teams impact patient outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to empirically assess how the stability of RN staffing within …

BACKGROUND: Health systems responsiveness (HSR) is the ability of systems to respond to legitimate non-health expectations of the population. The concept of HSR by the World Health Organization (WHO) includes respect for dignity, individual autonomy, confidentiality, prompt attention to care, availability of basic amenities, choice of provider, access to social support networks, and clarity of communication. The WHO tool is applied globally to assess HSR in low, middle, and high-income countries.

OBJECTIVE: We have revised the conceptual framework of HSR following a rigorous systematic review and made it specific for low- and middle-income countries (L&MICs). This study is designed to …

Transitions Of Care And The Prevention Of Readmissions, Beatriz Granado Jul 2024

Transitions Of Care And The Prevention Of Readmissions, Beatriz Granado

Student Scholarly Projects

Unplanned hospital readmissions often result from poor discharge planning and challenges during the transition from hospital to home, including medication errors and weak communication with primary care providers. A well-organized and personalized discharge plan can significantly reduce hospital stays, lower readmission rates, minimize medication errors, and improve patient outcomes, all while decreasing healthcare costs. In post-discharge Medicare-eligible patients (P), how does transitional care coordination through organized, personalized, and patient-focused discharge planning (I), compared with standard or no transitional care coordination provided (C), affect readmissions (O) within the 30-day post-discharge phase monitored over a 10–12-week period (T)? A search was conducted …

Journal of Indonesian Health Policy and Administration

Public Health Centers (PHCs) are responsible for organizing public health efforts and individual health efforts. PHCs also serve as FKTP, UPTD, sub-district supervisors, and implementers of policies and programs from the Ministry of Health. The workload of PHCs is increasing because people visit PHCs primarily for treatment, rather than seeking preventive measures to stay healthy. The PHCs have Sub-PHCs to lighten the workload of the PHCs, but there is no policy regulating Sub-PHCs to be used as FKTP. This research aims to analyze the policy of Balancing Community and Individual Health Efforts by utilizing Sub-PHCs such as FKTP. The research …

Florence County is at the heart of the seven-county Pee Dee Region of South Carolina with a diverse population of about 136,000 residents. Home to McLeod Regional Medical Center and MUSC Health Florence Medical Center, the area boasts more than 750 licensed beds. Despite being home to world-class medical care, the county faces significant health challenges, including high rates of chronic diseases, such as diabetes and obesity, and a shortage of healthcare providers in certain areas. Clinical Outcomes For Impella Patients Associated With Hyperlipidemia: An Analysis Of The National Inpatient Sample, Tony Elias, Sonika Vatsa, Kyrillos Girgis, Taha Syed, Rafail Beshai

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

The Impella, a ventricular assist device, is crucial for managing severe heart failure and cardiogenic shock. Despite its widespread use, there's scant information on how hyperlipidemia affects Impella patients. To address this gap, we delved into the National Inpatient Sample Database from 2019 and 2020. Our aim was to scrutinize in-hospital outcomes among these patients. We identified 8233 Impella patients, among whom 1012 (12.3%) had hyperlipidemia. Those with hyperlipidemia displayed higher rates of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and chronic kidney disease compared to their counterparts without hyperlipidemia. Shockingly, in-hospital mortality was notably elevated in the hyperlipidemia group, emphasizing its clinical significance. …
