Feasibility Of Using Emergency Department Patient Experience Surveys As A Proxy For Equity Of Care, Helen Chiu, Nadia Batara, Robert Stenstrom, Lianne Carley, Catherine Jones, Lena Cuthbertson, Eric Grafstein

Patient Experience Journal

Collecting and examining equity data can help inform quality improvement initiatives but is a relatively new practice in health care. The overall goal of this study was to assess different methods of administering patient experience surveys as a feasible starting point in measuring equity in an urban Emergency Department (ED) that serves a diverse patient population. Socio-demographic characteristics of patients visiting an ED were compared with those of patients who responded to provincial patient experience surveys routinely administered by mail. Patient experience survey data were collected over an 11-week period in an urban ED using different survey administration methods (face-to-face …

The Relationships Between Hcahps Communication And Discharge Satisfaction Items And Hospital Readmissions, Fadi Hachem, Jeff Canar, Francis Fullam Ma, Andrew S. Gallan Phd, Samuel Hohmann, Catherine Johnson

Patient Experience Journal

The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey has become a key metric used by organizations and patients to evaluate patient experience. Readmissions also continue to be a metric used to evaluate performance because of the added cost to both healthcare systems and patients. Both measures are also seen in programs such as Value Based Purchasing that have an effect on hospital reimbursements. Previous studies have demonstrated a relationship between patient perceptions and quality of care, and have found patients to be reliable evaluators of their care. While good communication and positive provider relationships have been related …

Quality Of Cancer Registry Data, Alicia Noel Richardson

Applied Research Projects

Cancer registry is a growing field and with data being collected year round the data needs to be of good quality standing. Quality of cancer care is measurable per standards when met within the time frame allotted per care regimen. Cancer programs are evaluating and implementing new process to make their data valid and complete through information technology and connection among hospital-based and community-based practices. The aim of this study is to review the available validity, barriers and utilization related to quality of cancer care data. The studies were consistent among each other in that a concurrent review of data, …

West Virginia Nursing Homes: Are They Up To The Standard?, Guillermo Madero Md, Shirley M. Neitch Md

Internal Medicine

Quality measurement and performance monitoring are under continuous assessment in Nursing Homes (NH). Through this research project we assess the quality of care provided in the NH in the state of West Virginia by publicly accessible quality measurements. The methodology for this research study was through the retrieval of data from the Nursing Home Compare website in which a total of 80 NH were located and analyzed. The results demonstrate that more than 50% of NH in West Virginia are at or above the national average when compared using the Five Star Rating System by CMS, in overall rating (59%), …

Meaningful Use – Is It Worth It?, Karen Perry Callahan Jan 2014

Meaningful Use – Is It Worth It?, Karen Perry Callahan

Applied Research Projects

The world of medicine has long been an ever changing environment. The advancements and progress in both knowledge and techniques has made patient care and treatment an increasingly successful endeavor. Physicians are often eager to embrace any new technology in the medical field that allows them to better care for their patients. The problem with new medical technology is that unless this technology can be shared or related to others, it is somewhat useless.

The medical profession has been somewhat reluctant to come to terms with the use of computer technology and its many benefits. Generally embedded in the use …

Factors Associated With Asthma Readmissions In Children's Hospitals, Maria Acedo Kronenburg Jan 2000

Factors Associated With Asthma Readmissions In Children's Hospitals, Maria Acedo Kronenburg

Health Services Research Dissertations

Asthma is the most common chronic illness of childhood. Pediatric asthma hospitalization rates and costs of care have risen in recent years. Readmissions, an adverse outcome often used to monitor quality of care, may account for the increase in asthma hospitalization rates. This research examined selected hospital and patient risk factors related to asthma readmissions, using Donabedian's framework for structure, process, and outcomes to assess the quality of care for children with asthma. Outcome measures included readmission for asthma within one year of initial hospitalization, readmission within 30 days, and multiple readmissions within one year. Structure factors measured were insurance …

Patient Perceptions Of Quality: The Influence Of Value And Beneficence, Rebecca H. Waldon Jun 1994

Patient Perceptions Of Quality: The Influence Of Value And Beneficence, Rebecca H. Waldon

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

The influence of patient values and patient perception of benefits on patient perceptions of quality have not been extensively investigated, even though patient and provider perceptions of quality have been widely studied. Refocusing quality assessment and improvement to include factors that influence patient perceptions of quality is necessary for humanitarian and economic reasons. The health care patient has certain expectations of health care. These expectations are based on the value the patient places on the services. Value is a predictor of patient-perception of quality. The relative worth of patient goals may also be related to patient perceptions of quality. If …
