Deaths Of Despair Among Cancer Survivors In Rural/Urban Appalachia (2000-2022), Jason Semprini, Anders Erickson, Nosa Osazuwa-Peters
Journal of Appalachian Health
Introduction: Rising deaths of despair (premature deaths from suicide, overdose, alcohol, and violence) in adults under age 65 persist across the United States, especially in Appalachia. People diagnosed with cancer may face elevated risks of such deaths due to pain, psychosocial distress, and financial hardship.
Purpose: Deaths of despair trends were compared among adults with cancer across Appalachian and non-Appalachian regions, stratified by sex and rurality.
Methods: Analyzing SEER-21 Incidence-Based Mortality data (2000–2022), deaths caused by suicide, cirrhosis of the liver, or accidents (includes overdose) were identified among adults aged 20–64 years. Annual mortality rates per 100,000 total population were …

Numerical Analysis Of The Sir Model For Predicting Disease Spread, Victoria Gaibor, Isabel Tejada, Kate Moore
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
This project, Numerical Solutions of the SIR Model for Predicting Disease Spread, investigates the application of numerical methods to analyze the dynamics of infectious diseases using the classical Susceptible–Infected–Recovered (SIR) model. The SIR model, a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations, is widely used to describe how diseases such as COVID-19 propagate through a population. The primary objective of this study is to solve the SIR initial value problem using multiple numerical techniques, including Euler’s method, Runge–Kutta methods, and multistep methods, and to compare their accuracy and efficiency. The model is implemented using given initial conditions and parameters, and additional …

Cost-Effectiveness Evaluation Of Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Chest Radiograph Interpretation For Tuberculosis Screening In Rural Health Units In The Philippines, Harold Henrison C. Chiu, Bryan Christopher C. Lao, Gloanne C. Adolor
Graduate School of Business Publications
Background: Tuberculosis remains a major public health burden in the Philippines, where diagnostic delays are amplified by limited radiology capacity in rural health units (RHUs) and geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs). Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) using artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted chest radiograph interpretation may shorten the screening pathway and reduce reliance on scarce specialist readers. However, its economic value for RHUbased tuberculosis screening has not been fully evaluated.
Methods: We developed a decision-tree cost-effectiveness model in Microsoft Excel 365 to compare AI-assisted chest radiograph interpretation with conventional manual radiologist or teleradiology interpretation among a theoretical annual cohort of 1,000 presumptive tuberculosis …

Background and Objectives The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) extension for scoping reviews (ScRs) (PRISMA-ScR) was published in 2018 to provide reporting guidance. A substantial increase in published ScRs in recent years coupled with the omission or lack of engagement of interest-holders, including patients and public partners, as research partners throughout its development necessitate updating PRISMA-ScR. Important methodological advancements have emerged since PRISMA-ScR 2018, including automation and data extraction, which need to be incorporated into this update and reflected in new reporting items. Aligned with PRISMA 2020, this ScR underpins the update by identifying potential new …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects approximately 674 million people worldwide and accounted for 35.6 million years of life lost in 2021.1 Premature mortality in CKD is driven largely by cardiovascular disease (CVD),2 and management of modifiable cardiometabolic risk factors remains essential alongside pharmacological renoprotection. Life's Essential 8 (LE8),3 a validated composite measure of cardiovascular health (CVH), has been associated with lower mortality in CKD,4 yet prior studies have relied on relative risk estimates, leaving the absolute survival benefit and the extent to which high CVH can close the life-expectancy gap between patients with and without CKD unclear. We therefore examined …

Data from the 2018 Indonesian Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) demonstrates a marked increase in stroke prevalence, rising from 7% in 2013 to 10% in 2018. This upward trend is accompanied by a notable epidemiological shift, with stroke no longer predominantly affecting older adults ≥65 years, but increasingly occurring among the productive-age population (15–64 years). This scoping review was conducted in February 2026 in accordance with the JBI methodological guidelines and PRISMA-ScR. Searches were conducted in Google Scholar, PubMed, Garuda, and ScienceDirect. Measles remains a public health concern in Indonesia, including Jakarta, contributing to the country’s disease burden. Sustained transmission during 2022-2024, despite reported vaccination coverage above 90%, suggests the presence of vulnerable groups. This study aimed to describe patterns and identify factors associated with laboratory-confirmed measles in Jakarta during 2022-2024. A cross-sectional study was conducted using routine surveillance data from all individuals reported as suspected measles cases during the study period. Descriptive analysis summarizes the distribution, while multivariable analysis identifies associated factors. Of the 4,194 suspected cases of measles, 22.8% were laboratory-confirmed positive. Showed a fluctuating temporal pattern, increasing from 20.6 …

Population ageing is associated with an increasing prevalence of limitations in activities of daily living. Joint disorders and osteoporosis are common health problems among older adults and may begin to emerge during middle age, potentially accelerating functional decline. However, studies examining the association between these conditions and limitations in activities of daily living in Indonesia remain limited. This study aimed to analyse the association between joint disorders and osteoporosis and limitations in activities of daily living among middle-aged and older adults in Indonesia. This study employed a cross-sectional design using data from the Indonesia Longitudinal Aging Survey (ILAS) 2023. The …
