Access To Care And Melanoma Incidence And Mortality In Nebraska, Natalia Trinidad Aug 2019

Access To Care And Melanoma Incidence And Mortality In Nebraska, Natalia Trinidad

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

The purpose of this study is to determine incidence and mortality of melanoma across all counties in Nebraska in the context of access to primary care providers and dermatologists. Crude and age-adjusted incidence rates of melanoma from 2001-2016 by county were calculated for the following year intervals: 2001-2005, 2006-2010, 2011-2016. Variables for melanoma cases were obtained from the Nebraska Cancer Registry and included the case’s zip code at diagnosis, race, ethnicity, sex, age at diagnosis, year, cancer site, vital status, stage of disease, and the ICD-O code for the cancer type. Crude and age-adjusted mortality rates were calculated for the …

Great Plains Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Project, Florence G. Duran May 2019

Great Plains Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Project, Florence G. Duran

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

Background: Great Plains American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) experience higher mortality rates than Non-Hispanic Whites from the same region. The National Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey can have limitations of the estimates the health risks behaviors and services from one Tribal community to another. Goals and Objectives: The goal of this project is to address the lack of Tribal specific data among AI/ANs in the Great Plains region (ND, SD, NE, IA) by using Great Plains Tribal BRFSS data that captured information for three tribes in the Great Plains region. Tribal specific data will allow tribes to access, …

The Association Between Neurocognitive Impairment And Health-Related Quality Of Life Among People Living With Human Immunodeficiency Virus (Hiv)., Philip S. Amara May 2019

The Association Between Neurocognitive Impairment And Health-Related Quality Of Life Among People Living With Human Immunodeficiency Virus (Hiv)., Philip S. Amara

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

Background: Despite the use of combination antiretroviral therapy, HIV associated neurocognitive impairment (NCI) persists in HIV seropositive persons, albeit in milder forms than before therapy was available. Nevertheless, the relationship between NCI and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is not well known.

Method: Baseline data from the CHARTER study was used to investigate the association between NCI and HRQoL. Factor analysis was employed to summarize the 35-item Medical Outcome Survey questionnaire into physical and mental HRQoL scores. General linear models were employed to investigate the association between NCI, as measured by global deficit scores (GDS), and HRQoL, and to control …

Factors Associated With Follow-Up Compliance Among Clients Referred By A Local Health Department For Hiv Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, Lauren R. Cirrincione Dec 2018

Factors Associated With Follow-Up Compliance Among Clients Referred By A Local Health Department For Hiv Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, Lauren R. Cirrincione

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

Background: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a public health strategy to limit HIV infection among at-risk populations. Local health departments (LHDs) promote PrEP initiation by referring patients to private and academic specialty care centers. However, low follow-up compliance remains a challenge in this setting. Between January 2016 and September 2018, Douglas County Health Department, a LHD in Omaha, Nebraska, externally referred 126 clients for PrEP at an academic specialty care center, and only 20 (15%) clients completed a PrEP initiation follow-up appointment. The purpose of this study is to describe the characteristics of clients referred by …

Trends In Childhood Elevated Blood Lead Levels In Nebraska, 2013 – 2017, Ellana Haakenstad Dec 2018

Trends In Childhood Elevated Blood Lead Levels In Nebraska, 2013 – 2017, Ellana Haakenstad

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

This project explored the exposure to lead among children in Nebraska. Using the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services’ Blood Lead Level database, trends were investigated in screening; demographics; incidence; and prevalence of elevated blood lead levels, statewide and by census tract. The study further explored the geography of lead exposure and elevated blood lead level cases with maps. Based on these results, policy recommendations were made to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services’ Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program, particularly about areas of Nebraska with high risk of lead incidence and exposure risk where testing should be …

Examining The Impact Of Hiv Medical And Social Case Management Program On Viral Load For Clients Living With Hiv/Aids In Nebraska, Abdulla Munir Dec 2018

Examining The Impact Of Hiv Medical And Social Case Management Program On Viral Load For Clients Living With Hiv/Aids In Nebraska, Abdulla Munir

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

Abstract

Case management (CM) is one of the standard practices that has been implemented since 1990 to help people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in the United States. The program is designed for low-income populations and it aims to address the barriers related to access to health care and improve the HIV outcomes. Previous studies identified a positive association with the provision of CM and improvement in viral outcomes. Increasing the viral suppression rates among HIV diagnosed individuals proved to reduce the risk of transmitting the infection, and disease incidence. Although CM program is provided to Nebraskans diagnosed with HIV, but …

The Incidence Rate, Types, And External Causes Of Traumatic Brain Injuries In Parkinson’S Disease Patients In Nebraska 2008-2014, Maher Alsaadi May 2018

The Incidence Rate, Types, And External Causes Of Traumatic Brain Injuries In Parkinson’S Disease Patients In Nebraska 2008-2014, Maher Alsaadi

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients are at higher risk of traumatic brain injury (TBI) due to disease characteristics like tremor, bradykinesia, and impaired balance. Most of the studies that have been done in the United States to investigate the incident rate and causes of TBI among PD patients have mainly focused on falls, while none of these studies have thoroughly addressed all causes of TBI among the PD population or have used a population-based database. Our study aims to investigate the incidence rate, types, and external causes of TBI stratified by age of PD diagnosis using a population-based database from …

Predictors Of Compliance And Predictive Values Of The Breast Cancer Screening Program Of The Oman Cancer Association (2009-2016), Sultan Al Balushi Dec 2017

Predictors Of Compliance And Predictive Values Of The Breast Cancer Screening Program Of The Oman Cancer Association (2009-2016), Sultan Al Balushi

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

Background: Most breast cancers in Oman are diagnosed at advanced stages and therefore early detection is important. The Oman Cancer Association (OCA) initiated a mobile mammography program in 2009 but no studies have evaluated the impact of the program. This study aimed to estimate the proportion of OCA-screened women who had repeated mammography (compliance) and the associated predictors. The sensitivity and specificity of the program were also evaluated.

Methods: Data for 13,079 women screened in the mammography clinic of OCA from 2009-2016 and medical records of all breast cancer patients seen at Royal and Sultan Qaboos University hospitals during the …
