Our study aimed to understand rural surgical care barriers and facilitators encountered by patients, providers, and stakeholders in Nebraska. Methods: This exploratory mixed methods study involved 17 semi-structured interviews using a snowball sampling of eligible participants affiliated with an MIS Advisory Committee. Two coders analyzed data using NVivo12. A follow-up review of …

Mass Matters: Increasing Mammography Rates To Underserved Women, Ingrid N. Cooper May 2020

Mass Matters: Increasing Mammography Rates To Underserved Women, Ingrid N. Cooper

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in Indiana and the United States (Indiana Cancer Organization, 2019). An estimated 268,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed and 41,760 women died due to breast cancer in 2019 (ACS, 2019). Substantial breast cancer-related morbidity and mortality disparities persist among the underserved. Disparities in breast cancer outcomes are due to lower mammography screening rates, lack of timely follow-up of abnormal results, and lack of timely treatment initiation among women with breast cancer (Highfield et al., 2015). The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to address low mammography …

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), one of the most common chronic diseases, is increasing worldwide, and once diagnosed, lifetime self-management is critical to maintain glycemic control (Vermeire et al., 2005; American Diabetes Association (ADA), 2018). Management of T2DM has been acknowledged as challenging due to the need for strict lifestyle adaptations. From a public health perspective, uncontrolled diabetes leads to increased healthcare costs, secondary complications, and ultimately severe disabilities (ADA, 2018). The purpose of this evidencebased practice (EBP) project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a diabetes-specific mobile health application (MHA) on glycated-hemoglobin (HbA1C), self-care perception (SCP), and self-care behaviors …

GREAT Day Posters

Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is a rare but severe disease that is transmitted among humans through direct-contact with, and close proximity to, infected bodily fluids. From 2014-16, West Africa experienced the largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded, infecting over 28,000 people, and killing over 11,000. Although the symptoms of EVD are treatable, the disease can be extremely deadly, with an average of 50% EVD cases resulting in fatality. In areas where healthcare is scarce and vaccinations are not readily available, the practices of social distancing and self-quarantining have been shown to be highly effective in combating the spread of EVD. Prophylaxis Of Food Allergen Sensitivity, Dustin Gottfeld Jan 2020

Prophylaxis Of Food Allergen Sensitivity, Dustin Gottfeld

Physician Assistant Studies | Student Authored Articles

Food allergies can have a severe and drastic effect on a person’s lifestyle, while prevention of allergic disease can help to ensure others do not have to live with this burden. There are a variety of differing hypotheses that offer explanations for the early development of food allergies, particularly peanut allergies. Two of the foremost hypotheses are the Hygiene Hypothesis and the Dual-Allergen Hypothesis. The Hygiene Hypothesis claims that the diversity of a child’s microbiota creates a beneficial balance of microorganisms which can help prevent the development of allergic disease. Alternatively, the Dual-Allergen Hypothesis states that early environmental exposure to …

Antiresorptive Bone Therapy Use In Advanced Lung Cancer And Associated Outcomes, Noor Naffakh Jan 2020

Antiresorptive Bone Therapy Use In Advanced Lung Cancer And Associated Outcomes, Noor Naffakh

Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacy

Background/Rationale: Studies have shown antiresorptive agents decrease skeletal related events in metastatic non-small cell lung cancer. However, two prevalence studies have found low utilization rates of antiresorptive therapy in advanced lung cancer. The first study reported a rate of 14.8% during the 1995-2009 time period, while the second study reported a 33% usage rate during the time frame of 2002-2011. We believe these low utilization rates are associated with the poor prognosis of these patients. The prognosis of advanced lung cancer has improved significantly since these trials were conducted, and the utilization of denosumab has not been evaluated. We hypothesize …
