Cooperative Extension can make a significant impact on health in the United States through effective community engagement that focuses on the complex socio-ecological factors that impact health. The Stakeholder Engagement in Question Development Method (SEED Method) employs community based participatory research principles to engage communities in research, problem-solving, and action planning. Projects employing the SEED Method engage community members from diverse backgrounds, create community capacity, result in tangible outcomes, and foment inter-organizational trust and networking. A SEED Toolkit is available on the Extension Foundation Campus site and provides implementation instructions, tools and timelines, and potential applications within Extension.

Family caregivers provide invaluable service by taking on the responsibility of caring for older adults in the United States. With a growing aging population, the need for family caregivers and demands on their time and resources will continue to increase. Although a variety of caregiving resources and support services exist, family caregivers often lack the awareness, time, transportation, or financial resources to connect to services. There is a critical need to address the barriers that prevent caregivers from accessing services. In this commentary, we highlight barriers and make recommendations for improving conversations, research, and practice to meet this growing problem.

BACKGROUND: People who use drugs (PWUD) are at increased risk for blood-borne viruses, including hepatitis B (HBV) and delta (HDV). Despite the public health threats both viruses present, awareness remains low among at-risk communities and providers who serve them. This study assessed barriers to HBV and HDV prevention, diagnosis, and linkage to care, evaluated existing levels of knowledge, and identified educational needs and preferences among both PWUD and service providers.

People with HIV (PWH) have often experienced chronic stressors across their lifespan, including adverse childhood experiences (ACES), lifetime economic hardship (LEH), and concurrent stressors associated with living in urban areas (urban stress). Prolonged exposure to stressors might result in differential coping patterns among PWH that can impact care trajectories. We utilized a life course-informed approach to examine chronic stressors as antecedents of latent coping strategies among PWH in care. Rationale: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a heterogeneous condition. Objectives: We hypothesized that the unbiased integration of different COPD lung omics using a novel multilayer approach might unravel mechanisms associated with clinical characteristics.

Methods: We profiled mRNA, microRNA and methylome in lung tissue samples from 135 former smokers with COPD. For each omic (layer), we built a patient network on the basis of molecular similarity. The three networks were used to build a multilayer network, and optimization of multiplex modularity was used to identify patient communities across the three distinct layers. Background: The impact of hospital care quality on patient outcomes in post-stroke aphasia remains unclear. We investigated the impact of nationally-endorsed acute stroke treatments on outcomes post-stroke, by aphasia status. Methods: Patient-level data from the Australian Stroke Clinical Registry (2009–2013) linked to national deaths, hospital emergency presentations and admissions data were used. Patient experience is an important driver of healthcare improvement. Yet, in Lebanon, there is a lack of studies focusing on the satisfaction of outpatients with healthcare quality. This study aims to assess the quality of outpatient care in Lebanon from the patient’s perspective and identify its determinants. A cross-sectional survey was administered, between December 2023 and January 2024, to 265 participants over 18 years old who consulted a healthcare provider, excluding dentists. This study explores the experiences of individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds using electronic medical records (EMRs) and identifies strategies to improve the inclusivity and usability of EMRs, aiming to reduce the digital divide in their access and use. A rapid review of the literature was conducted using Medline, Embase, and CINAHL databases to identify relevant studies published between 2010 and November 2023, with the assistance of a medical librarian.

The Covid-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the support networks for older adults and caregivers as health and social care systems were forced to dramatically change the ways patients and clients interacted with providers, services, and programs. In Northern Ontario, caregivers are older, caring in more intense situations, more likely to be caring for multiple care recipients simultaneously and less likely to be in contact with health professionals. The COVID-19 pandemic was highly disruptive for people delivering babies in-hospital and for obstetrical healthcare professionals. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of people with or without COVID-19 giving birth in a community-based hospital to provide patient insight to obstetrical care providers regarding the services/policies used during the pandemic. Gastrointestinal immune-related adverse events (GI irAEs) are common manifestations of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) toxicity. We present a comprehensive systematic review of the incidence, management, and clinical course of irAEs across the entire GI system, including the luminal GI tract, liver, and pancreas. Annually, tens of thousands of U.S. children and adolescents are hospitalized with seasonal influenza virus infection. Both influenza vaccination and early initiation of antiviral treatment can reduce complications of influenza. Using data from two U.S. influenza surveillance networks for children and adolescents agedattended, laboratory-confirmed influenza for whom antiviral treatment is recommended, the percentage who received treatment was calculated. Trends in antiviral treatment of children and adolescents hospitalized with influenza from the 2017-18 to the 2023-2024 influenza seasons were also examined. Since 2017-18, when 70%-86% of hospitalized children and adolescents with influenza received antiviral treatment, the proportion receiving treatment notably declined. …

INTRODUCTION: Increasing evidence indicates that sex is a factor that impacts the abuse liability and relapse vulnerability of prescription opioids like oxycodone. However, while women are more likely than men to be prescribed and to use these drugs, the impact of sex and ovarian hormones on prescription opioid use and relapse vulnerability remains unclear. Accurately assessing these measures is complicated by the fact that chronic opioid exposure can lower ovarian hormone levels and cause cycle irregularities.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of opioids during therapeutic hypothermia (TH) on short-term outcomes in neonates with neonatal encephalopathy (NE).

METHODS: Multicenter retrospective study of neonates with moderate/severe NE from Jan. 2013-Feb 2021. Opioid exposure was classified as positive (>0.1 mg/kg) or negative (no exposure or ≤0.1 mg/kg) based on cumulative morphine milligram equivalents (MME). Negative binomial regression models were used to evaluate clinical outcomes.

Stroke merupakan masalah kesehatan di Indonesia dengan prevalensi 8,3 kasus per seribu penduduk. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperoleh gambaran faktor risiko stroke pada lansia berdasarkan gender, dengan fokus pada faktor yang dapat dimodifikasi seperti aktivitas fisik, pola makan, kebiasaan merokok, dan pemeriksaan tekanan darah rutin. Penelitian ini menggunakan data sekunder dari Survei Kesehatan Indonesia (SKI) 2023 yang dirancang potong lintang. Sampel studi ini adalah subjek berusia ≥60 tahun (lansia) yang melaporkan diri atau didiagnosis stroke.
