More than a third of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in America is primarily due to modifiable risk factors. This reflects the significant impact that patient behavior could have on health outcomes. Our solution is to develop a tool that would convert Framingham Risk Score (FRS) – the gold standard of cardiac risk assessment – into a personalized mode that best incorporates patient’s desires and abilities, and that ultimately elicits behavior change. The first phase in this project was to understand how physicians are currently assessing cardiac risk.

Allison, Krista, and Zach worked on a farm and surrounding community gardens with high school students from Philadelphia Youth Network (PYN). The 25 PYN youths were divided into groups and focused on different projects related to urban gardening. The groups included social media, marketing, garden/landscape design, environmental education, and construction/ farm maintenance. Each youth was given the opportunity to explore his or her own interests within the realm of farming.

The Ministry of Health and individual villages are aware of its impact on people’s health and well-being as well as its impact on the country’s economy. The goal of the JeffHEALTH project is to educate poor, rural villages in Rwanda so that village members can take the knowledge they gain, put it into practice and share this knowledge with generations to come.

Background: Low-level environmental cadmium exposure and neurotoxicity has not been well studied in adults. Our goal was to evaluate associations between neurocognitive exam scores and a biomarker of cumulative cadmium exposure among adults in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III).

Methods: NHANES III is a nationally representative cross-sectional survey of the U.S. population conducted between 1988 and 1994. We analyzed data from a subset of participants, age 20–59, who participated in a computer-based neurocognitive evaluation. Background: Publicly insured women usually have a different demographic background to privately insured women, which is related to poor neonatal outcomes after birth. Given the difference in nature and risk of preterm versus term births, it would be important to compare adverse neonatal outcomes after preterm birth between these groups of women after eliminating the demographic differences between the groups. Methods: The study population included 3085 publicly insured and 3380 privately insured, singleton, preterm deliveries (32–36 weeks gestation) from Western Australia during 1998–2008. Introduction: Injuries and fatalities due to large truck and other vehicle crashes have decreased over the last decade, but motor vehicle injuries remain a leading cause of death for both the working and general populations. The present study was undertaken to determine semi truck driver and sleeper berth passenger injury risk in a moving semi truck collision using a matched-pair cohort study.

There is increased demand for disclosure of raw data from studies used by the U.S. EPA in these reviews.

BACKGROUND: The objectives of this study were to investigate older adults' knowledge of prescription drug safety and interactions with alcohol, and to identify pharmacists' willingness to disseminate prescription drug safety information to older adults.

METHODS: The convenience sample consisted of 48 older adults aged 54-89 years who were recruited from a local pharmacy and who completed surveys addressing their alcohol consumption, understanding of alcohol and prescription drug interactions, and willingness to change habits regarding alcohol consumption and prescription drugs. The revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), scheduled for publication in May 2013 by the American Psychiatric Association (APA), has created a firestorm of controversy because of questions about undue industry influence. Specifically, concerns have been raised about financial conflicts of interest between DSM-5 panel members and the pharmaceutical industry. The authors argue that current approaches to the management of these relationships, particularly transparency of them, are insufficient solutions to the problem of industry’s capture of organized psychiatry. Objective: The nature of interpersonal relationships, whether supportive or critical, may affect the association between health status and mental health outcomes. We examined the potential moderating effects of social support, as a buffer, and family criticism, as an exacerbating factor, on the association between illness burden, functional impairment and depressive symptoms.

Methods: Our sample of 735 older adults, 65 years and older, was recruited from internal and family medicine primary care offices. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Substance use is a prevalent issue in primary care with wide-reaching implications, particularly for the care of HIV-infected patients. This analysis identified patient and provider characteristics associated with high comfort discussing substance use in HIV primary care clinics using multivariable logistic regression.

METHODS: A total of 413 patients and 44 providers completed surveys on their comfort discussing substance use. Additional independent variables from surveys included demographics, drug and alcohol use, self-efficacy, and activation for patients. Providerlevel data included demographics, training, practice descriptors, and stress levels.

RESULTS: The majority of patients (76%) and providers (73%) reported high comfort. …

Angka kematian neonatal Indonesia menduduki peringkat ke-10 tertinggi di dunia disebabkan kejadian bayi dengan berat badan lahir rendah (BBLR) yang tinggi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh berat lahir terhadap kelangsungan hidup neonatal. Penelitian dengan desain studi kohort retrospektif ini menggunakan sumber data sekunder Survei Demografi Kesehatan Indonesia tahun 2007. Sampel meliputi 11.748 bayi yang memenuhi kriteria anak terakhir lahir hidup, lahir tunggal, dan saat wawancara berumur minimal 28 hari. Probabilitas kumulatif kelangsungan hidupneonatal di Indonesia adalah 98,49% dan cenderung semakin rendah sesuai dengan berat lahir, pada neonatal dengan berat lahir rendah adalah 95,68% dan neonatal berat lahir sangat rendah …

Diare shigellosis pada balita merupakan masalah serius sebab dapat menyebabkan kematian. Untuk mengetahui faktor-faktor risiko kejadian shigellosis pada anak balita dilakukan studi kasus kontrol di beberapa rumah sakit di Kota Makassar dengan 68 kasus dan 136 kontrol. Data mengenai jenis kelamin dan status gizi anak balita, pemberian air susu ibu (ASI) eksklusif, status ekonomi, pendidikan ibu, kebiasaan ibu mencuci tangan memakai sabun, kepadatan hunian rumah, sarana air bersih, danjamban keluarga dikumpulkan dengan wawancara dan observasi serta dikategorikan dan disaring (screening) dengan uji chi square. Enam variabel dengan nilai p < 0,25 dimasukkan dalam uji regresi logistik yang menghasilkan variabel dengan nilai p < 0,05 (gizi rendah, ASI tidak eksklusif, dan status ekonomi rendah). Uji regresi logistik tahap kedua dengan 3 variabel ini menghasilkan model shigellosis = 1,47 gizi rendah + 1,471 ASI tidak eksklusif + 1,022 status ekonomi rendah - 2,546 dengan nilai oddsratio (OR) = 4,352 (gizi rendah), 4,353 (ASI tidak eksklusif), dan 2,779 (status ekonomi rendah). Studi ini menyimpulkan bahwa gizi balita yang rendah, pemberian ASI yang tidak eksklusif, dan status ekonomi ibu yang rendah merupakan faktor-faktor risiko penting kejadian diare shigellosis pada balita.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perkembanganpengendalian penyakit malaria di Provinsi Maluku Utara dalam upaya percepatan pencapaian target 6C Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Penelitian menggunakan metode studi kualitatif yang dilakukan pada informan terpilih meliputi petugas kesehatan Dinas Kesehatan Provinsi Maluku Utara, petugas kesehatan Malaria Center, dan tokoh masyarakat pemerhati malaria.
