Physical Activity And Mental Health Of Youth During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Amber Watson, Alicia Fedewa, Clair Tischner
International Journal of Physical Activity and Health
The COVID-19 Pandemic has globally impacted children’s physical activity and mental health outcomes since the transition to remote learning (Štveráková, et al., 2021). Children and adults may encounter negative mental health related consequences, higher stress, and a significant lack of physical activity while in physical and social isolation (Clemente-Suárez, 2022). In particular, school-aged children have experienced a significant reduction in physical activity since transitioning to remote learning and do not have sufficient opportunities to make up for this loss while engaged in remote learning (Štveráková, et al., 2021). Increased physical activity has been consistently correlated with positive mental health outcomes …

Background: Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a framework for implementing evidence-based interventions for preventing behavioral issues and improving climate in schools. The implementation of school-wide PBIS with fidelity is complex, requiring leadership commitment, teaming, and coordination of systems for tracking behaviors and consequences. Putting these components in place while ensuring alignment with the values and needs of the school community can be difficult for schools with fewer resources, such as rural schools. Implementation supports are needed, including strategies such as technical assistance, but it is unclear whether lower-cost modalities such as virtual support are acceptable, appropriate, and feasible …
Understanding Connections Between Public Health Districts And Individuals Who Have Recently Been Released From Carceral Systems In Idaho, Ashley Harris
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Background
Gaining a better understanding of the relationship between public health and individuals recently released from the carceral system in Idaho is vital. According to the Federal Bureau of Justice Statistics, in 2020 Idaho had the highest female incarceration rate of all US states at twice the national average (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2020). The incarceration rate of women and girls has increased nearly 834% in the last 40 years and rates in Idaho follow this trend (Steinberg, 2018). Compared to 62% of women in prisons nationally, 80% of women in local jails report having children under the age of …

Obesity, body image, and depression are all biopsychosocial phenomena that are frequently misunderstood across cultures. Body dissatisfaction is a psychological aspect of obesity that has been associated with disordered eating, low self-esteem, and depression. Nevertheless, body image dissatisfaction may affect non-obese individuals too. Those with a positive body image are more likely to participate in physical activity than those with a negative body image. Individuals who are satisfied with their body image are more likely to possess high self-esteem, confidence, and healthy eating habits. Obesity prevention among the black population is increasingly important. This study sought to examine the perceptions …

Due to the increased desire for independence and financial gain, many adolescents decide to pursue the expansion of their job skills by entering the labor force. Adolescents crave financial independence and freedom. However, many are unaware of the risks that accompany working. The perpetrators of adolescent workplace violence are generally thought to be customers or coworkers. But what if it was the supervisor?
The main objective of the study is to determine whether abusive supervision of young workers differs depending on the worker’s race/ethnicity. Using …

Is Adiposity Related To Repeat Measures Of Blood Leukocyte Dna Methylation Across Childhood And Adolescence?, Luke Montrose
Public and Population Health Faculty Publications and Presentations
Epigenetic modifications such as DNA methylation may influence gene expression and phenotypes, including obesity in childhood. The directionality of this relationship is nevertheless unclear, and some evidence suggests that adiposity modifies the epigenome, rather than the other way around. In this pilot study, we utilize data from the Early Life Exposures in Mexico to Environmental Toxicants (ELEMENT) study to examine whether measures of adiposity in childhood and early adolescence are associated with repeated measures of blood leukocyte DNA methylation at LINE-1 repetitive elements and two genes implicated in growth and adiposity: H19 and HSD11B2. Longitudinal epigenetic data were generated …
