Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This research focuses on veterans in rural communities who have less access to mental health providers. The Yellow Ribbon Task Force program promoted and encouraged engagement in mental health care for veterans in rural communities, although future policies should enhance already existing clinical practices to increase standards for care. For further study, researchers should focus on evaluating initial program implementation and pilot testing in a variety of states and rural populations.

In this chapter we review recent research regarding the relationship between religious faith/spirituality and mental health outcomes, as well as provide directions for future research and discussion. The specific aspects of mental health and illness that we focus on include well-being, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and schizophrenia. We also briefly discuss research pertaining to religious faith and personality disorders, eating disorders, somatoform disorders, and bipolar disorder.

Gun ownership has risen dramatically in the United States since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and with it, the number of gun violence incidents. Because of this, children and adolescents are being affected, whether directly or indirectly, by the violence in their communities. While there are many debates within the political realm on how best to prevent these incidents from happening, counselors, both clinical and school, are needed to help mitigate the short- and long-term effects.
