Embodied Narratives: The Influence Of Dance/Movement Therapy On The Mood Of Hospitalized Children, Ashlea Palafox

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

The purpose of this qualitative collective case study was to understand how my Blanche Evan’s based dance/movement therapy treatment influenced mood for children on my case load in an inpatient general medical pediatrics unit. Patients participated in a minimum of one dance/movement therapy (DMT) session based on: availability, schedule of the subjects’ other medical treatments, and discharge date. Data collection methods included researcher journaling and audio recorded semi-structured interviews with participants and their caretakers following a one-hour dance/movement therapy session. Data was analyzed using thematic narrative analysis with a focus on the conversation between interview data and journal entries. Through …

Dance/Movement Therapy And Competitive Dance: An In Depth Self Evaluation, Veronica A. Chapp-Miller Aug 2016

Dance/Movement Therapy And Competitive Dance: An In Depth Self Evaluation, Veronica A. Chapp-Miller

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

I used artistic inquiry self-study methodology to extend my knowledge, awareness, and understanding of how dance/movement therapy (DMT) and counseling concepts can positively alter and enhance my personal dance aesthetic, style, and pedagogy. Reflection is a personal process that can deepen the sense of self and can lead to significant discoveries or insights, while self-assessment is a process that involves establishing strengths, improvements, and insights based on predetermined performance criteria. Using artistic inquiry gave me the opportunity to study, analyze, and document where and how the DMT process and concepts have developed within my natural teaching approach. Engaging in this …

How Best To Study For A Test: A Comparison Of Practice Retrieval And Self-Explanation, Casey Fortney Aug 2016

How Best To Study For A Test: A Comparison Of Practice Retrieval And Self-Explanation, Casey Fortney

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Students often struggle to prepare for their exams, perhaps as a result of using an unhelpful study method. This study compared the effects of using three study methods: rereading, practice retrieval, and self-explanation. 79 college students studied a short science text passage and were tested with both verbatim and inference questions one week later. Students who reread the information did not perform differently from those who practiced retrieving or self-explained the information. Students who self-explained the information performed better on verbatim test questions than those who practiced retrieving the information. Possible explanations for these findings and implications are discussed.

Reducing The Time It Takes To Execute A Legal Hold On Patients Currently On A Voluntary Status And To Transport Them To A Locked Inpatient Psychiatric Facility, Ariel Cris B. Manipula Aug 2016

Reducing The Time It Takes To Execute A Legal Hold On Patients Currently On A Voluntary Status And To Transport Them To A Locked Inpatient Psychiatric Facility, Ariel Cris B. Manipula

Master's Projects and Capstones

The purpose of this presentation is to improve the communication between departments involved in the “step-up” process. An improved level of communication is measured with the amount of time it takes to get patient from outpatient lobby to inpatient unit bed. This process begins when a patient is placed on a legal hold because they are a danger to themselves, danger to others or gravely disabled. The problem is that the current process takes up to an hour and varies heavily on whether or not the unit charge nurse and the admissions and records agent are properly trained and knowledgeable …

Non-Suicidal Self-Injury, Suicidal Behaviors, And Body Investment In Heterosexual And Sexual Minority Young Adults, Emily Cox Aug 2016

Non-Suicidal Self-Injury, Suicidal Behaviors, And Body Investment In Heterosexual And Sexual Minority Young Adults, Emily Cox

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

College-aged individuals who identify with a sexual minority orientation are at high risk for non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicidal behaviors. Research is lacking on identification of factors contributing to increased risk for this population. This study examined two facets of body investment, body protection and body feelings, as they relate to NSSI, individual and total suicidal behaviors, and sexual orientation. It was hypothesized that NSSI and individual suicidal behaviors would be more frequent in the sexual minority sample compared to the heterosexual sample, body protection and body feelings would be poorer in sexual minorities compared to the heterosexual sample, and …

Learning To Relate: A Heuristic Inquiry Exploring The Development Of Therapeutic Relationships, Megan King Aug 2016

Learning To Relate: A Heuristic Inquiry Exploring The Development Of Therapeutic Relationships, Megan King

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

This heuristic inquiry explored the creation of therapeutic relationships. The intention of this research was to learn how to build therapeutic relationships with clients that I felt uncomfortable around, with whom I did not have much experience and whom I did not want to relate to due my personal prejudices around severe illnesses and extreme developmental and cognitive delays. This study was important not only to expand my knowledge and experiences working with these populations but to also inform my future clinical experiences with new clients as I embark on my professional career. I collected data through reflective journaling and …

Cultural Diversity And The Impact Of Acculturation And Personal Experience On Perceptions Of Suicide, Susan Breidenich Aug 2016

Cultural Diversity And The Impact Of Acculturation And Personal Experience On Perceptions Of Suicide, Susan Breidenich

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Many factors influence cross-cultural differences in suicide rates and behaviors. One potential explanation is that attitudes and values influence the way individuals perceive suicide. In addition, previous literature indicates that attitudes can change in response to individual experiences. Further research on cultural attitudes toward suicide and individual experiences that influence them could inform prevention and treatment efforts targeted toward multicultural populations. The aim of this study is to examine the impact of culture, acculturation, and personal experience (i.e., exposure to suicidal behavior through close relationship) on suicide attitudes. The hypotheses were (1) that significant differences in attitudes towards suicide will …

Mutuality In Movement: A Relational Approach To Dance/Movement Therapy With Domestic Violence Survivors, Heather L. Maclaren Aug 2016

Mutuality In Movement: A Relational Approach To Dance/Movement Therapy With Domestic Violence Survivors, Heather L. Maclaren

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

This qualitative case study explored the integration of relational-cultural therapy and dance/movement therapy (DMT), or relational-DMT, with survivors of domestic violence. The study examined how participants experience relational-DMT and the therapeutic relationship we established together. Three culturally diverse participants receiving individual short-term counseling services at a domestic violence service agency were included in the study. Three forms of data were collected over six to eight therapy sessions. Following each session, the participants completed the Helpful Aspects of Therapy questionnaire, while the researcher completed embodied case documentation (Fogel, 2007). After the final therapy session, a semi-structured interview was conducted with each …

Parental Sensitivity Predicted By Parent Personality And Infant Temperament, Lauren Bailes Aug 2016

Parental Sensitivity Predicted By Parent Personality And Infant Temperament, Lauren Bailes

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The determinants of parenting model (Belsky, 1984) suggests that there are intrinsic and extrinsic factors that contribute to parenting. Previous research has suggested that aspects of parent personality, such as neuroticism and extraversion, were predictive of parenting, but this research has provided conflicting results on the effect personality has on parenting. Furthermore, infant temperament has also found to be influential on parenting, but has also generated mixed results concerning how negative reactivity influences parenting. In regard to both variables, research on fathers is severely lacking. This study examined the direct effects of parent personality on parenting through the BIS/BAS model. …

Spatial Attention To Social Cues Is Not A Monolithic Process, Samuel M. Harding, Ty W. Boyer, Bennett I. Bertenthal Aug 2016

Spatial Attention To Social Cues Is Not A Monolithic Process, Samuel M. Harding, Ty W. Boyer, Bennett I. Bertenthal

Psychology: Faculty Presentations (2009-2022)

Social stimuli are a highly salient source of information, and seem to possess unique qualities that set them apart from other well-known categories. One characteristic is their ability to elicit spatial orienting, whereby directional stimuli like eyegaze and pointing gestures act as exogenous cues that trigger automatic shifts of attention that are difficult to inhibit. This effect has been extended to non-social stimuli, like arrows, leading to some uncertainty regarding whether spatial orienting is specialized for social cues. Using a standard spatial cueing paradigm, we found evidence that both a pointing hand and arrow are effective cues, but that the …

Schizophrenia Relapse, Patient Considerations, And Potential Role Of Lurasidone, Leslie L. Citrome Aug 2016

Schizophrenia Relapse, Patient Considerations, And Potential Role Of Lurasidone, Leslie L. Citrome

NYMC Faculty Publications

When treating persons with schizophrenia, delaying time to relapse is a main goal. Antipsychotic medication has been the primary treatment approach, and there are a variety of different choices available. Lurasidone is a second-generation (atypical) antipsychotic agent that is approved for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar depression. Three long-term studies of lurasidone have examined time to relapse in persons with schizophrenia, including a classic placebo-controlled randomized withdrawal study and two 12-month active comparator studies (vs risperidone and vs quetiapine extended-release). Lurasidone 40-80 mg/d evidenced superiority over placebo (number needed to treat [NNT] vs placebo for relapse, 9). Lurasidone 40-160 …

Camels are well adapted to hot arid environments and can contribute significantly to the economy of developing countries in arid regions of the world. Full understanding of the physiology of camels requires understanding of the internal temporal order of the body, as reflected in daily or circadian rhythms. In the current study, we investigated the daily rhythmicity of 20 physiological variables in camels exposed to natural oscillations of ambient temperature in a desert environment and compared the daily temporal courses of the variables. We also studied the rhythm of core body temperature under experimental conditions with constant ambient temperature in …

PTSD in military personnel is highly prevalent and accompanied by elevated rates of additional issues such as depression, problematic alcohol use, and interpersonal relationship problems. Family members and spouses of military personnel have also been shown to be negatively impacted by PTSD symptoms. Previous research has indicated that family members and spouses’ expressed emotion regarding the PTSD patients’ symptoms negatively impacts treatment outcome in civilian populations. However, studies have yet to investigate the effect of expressed emotion on the course of PTSD symptoms and associated problems in military personnel. Therefore, the purpose of the present investigation was to examine the …

Impact Of Luminance And Spatial Parameters On The Generation Of The Human Pattern Electroretinogram., Kate A. Godwin Aug 2016

Impact Of Luminance And Spatial Parameters On The Generation Of The Human Pattern Electroretinogram., Kate A. Godwin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current work assessed some of the key hypotheses behind the generation of the pattern electroretinogram (PERG) response. The first of these hypotheses states that the PERG response is the result of linear cancellation of simultaneous increment and decrement retinal responses, as generated by the retinal ON- and OFF-pathways. Experiment 1 evaluated the possibility of simulating the PERG by summing the ERG responses elicited by increment and decrement flashes, and found that it was indeed possible to simulate the PERG from these responses. However, only the steady-state PERG could be modeled consistently. The second hypothesis evaluated a theory that the …

Gestational Hormone Profiles Predict Human Maternal Behavior At 1-Year Postpartum, Laura M. Glynn, Elyssia Poggi Davis, Curt A. Sandman, Wendy A. Goldberg

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

In many non-human species, including primates, gestational reproductive hormones play an essential role in the onset of maternal motivation and behaviors. We investigated the associations between prepartum estradiol and progesterone and maternal behavior at 1-year postpartum in 177 women. Blood was obtained at five gestational time points and an index of quality of maternal care was determined using a well-validated mother-child interaction protocol. Women who exhibited higher quality maternal care at 1-year postpartum were characterized by unique gestational profiles of estradiol, progesterone and the estrogen to progesterone ratio; specifically by slower accelerations and levels of these hormone trajectories beginning in …

Methylation Of The Leukocyte Glucocorticoid Receptor Gene Promoter In Adults: Associations With Early Adversity And Depressive, Anxiety And Substance-Use Disorders, A. R. Tyrka, S H. Parade, E S. Welch, K. K. Ridout, L Price, C Marsit, L Carpenter Jul 2016

Methylation Of The Leukocyte Glucocorticoid Receptor Gene Promoter In Adults: Associations With Early Adversity And Depressive, Anxiety And Substance-Use Disorders, A. R. Tyrka, S H. Parade, E S. Welch, K. K. Ridout, L Price, C Marsit, L Carpenter

Dartmouth Scholarship

Early adversity increases risk for developing psychopathology. Epigenetic modification of stress reactivity genes is a likely mechanism contributing to this risk. The glucocorticoid receptor (GR) gene is of particular interest because of the regulatory role of the GR in hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis function. Mounting evidence suggests that early adversity is associated with GR promoter methylation and gene expression. Few studies have examined links between GR promoter methylation and psychopathology, and findings to date have been mixed. Healthy adult participants (N = 340) who were free of psychotropic medications reported on their childhood experiences of maltreatment and parental death and desertion. …
