Review Of Pilot Performance And Pilot-Automation Interaction Models In Support Of Nextgen, Angelia Sebok, Christopher D. Wickens
Review Of Pilot Performance And Pilot-Automation Interaction Models In Support Of Nextgen, Angelia Sebok, Christopher D. Wickens
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2013
Computational models of aircraft pilot performance will gain importance over the next decades, as major evolutions in the national airspace continue to emerge with the NextGen program. Evaluating new technology, or procedures such as self-separation, requires time and resourceconsuming pilot-in-the-loop (PITL) simulations. Models can augment PITL findings and they can help to constrain the scope of PITL simulations. If they are validated, such computational models may actually answer some design questions in place of PITL simulations. This paper summarizes a review of modeling efforts to address pilot performance, and elaborates on pilot-automation interaction models.

Venlafaxine-Induced Orthostatic Hypotension In A Geriatric Patient, Vidyashree Chikkaramanjegowda, Jose De Leon
Venlafaxine-Induced Orthostatic Hypotension In A Geriatric Patient, Vidyashree Chikkaramanjegowda, Jose De Leon
Psychiatry Faculty Publications
Venlafaxine is not usually associated with risk of orthostatic hypotension. A 65-year-old US Caucasian female taking 225 mg/day of venlafaxine extended-release developed symptomatic orthostatic hypotension. The systolic and diastolic blood pressure dropped by 25 and 18 mm Hg, respectively, from supine position to standing position within 3 minutes. The patient was otherwise healthy and the orthostatic hypotension resolved with venlafaxine discontinuation. This was a probable venlafaxine adverse drug reaction according to the Naranjo scale. This case contributes to the scarce literature that indicates that clinicians need to be aware that occasionally venlafaxine can induce clinically significant orthostatic hypotension, particularly in …

Get Rich U Or Get Transformed U: Reflections On Catholic Liberal Arts Education In The 21st Century, Thomas G. Plante
Psychology
Catholic liberal arts educators can proclaim boldly that we are in the business of formation and transformation of students at multiple levels and in multiple ways. We want our students to be competent, ethical, and compassionate global citizens who are thoughtful, savvy, deep thinkers who love learning and who love helping others. Research and best practices support the claim that the virtues cultivated by the liberal arts contribute to the flourishing of individuals and society as a whole. Catholic colleges and universities have a long history of promoting the liberal arts, and data from various sources suggest that we are …
Evaluating Check-In Check-Out With Peer Tutors For Children With Attention Maintained Problem Behaviors, Sindy Sanchez
Evaluating Check-In Check-Out With Peer Tutors For Children With Attention Maintained Problem Behaviors, Sindy Sanchez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
An educational framework known as School Wide Positive Behavior Support being implemented in school systems across the country provides the schools with three tiers of support to address both academic and behavior challenges. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of peer tutors when applied to a Tier 2 intervention known as Check-In Check-Out (CICO). Peer tutors performed the morning check-in with the tutees by setting the expectations for the day and giving the tutees their Daily Progress Report (DPR) form. Throughout the day, the tutees took the DPR form to each class where they received a …

This chapter describes a multiyear professional development effort undertaken by a learning and teaching center at a liberal arts college. As part of its founding mandate, the center helps faculty improve teaching by paying attention to the current literature about how people learn. This core commitment of our center is pursued through support of a year‐long faculty seminar. Now in its fourth year, the seminar has had a significant impact on its faculty participants and their thinking about teaching and learning. Moreover, the seminar has seeded a number of teaching and assessment initiatives at the college.

Activities Of Daily Living Scale In Hoarding Disorder, Randy O. Frost, Veselina Hristova, Gail Steketee, David F. Tolin
Psychology: Faculty Publications
Research on hoarding over the last two decades has shown that hoarding disorder appears to be a distinct disorder that burdens the individual, the community and the families of people who hoard. Although hoarding clearly interferes with the daily functioning, especially in the context of extensive clutter, no validated measures of this interference have been developed. The present research examined the psychometric properties of the Activities of Daily Living in Hoarding scale (ADL-H) in two large samples of individuals with significant hoarding problems, one identified through the internet (n=363) and a second through clinical diagnostic interviews (n=202). The ADL-H scale …

Do People With Hoarding Disorder Under-Report Their Symptoms?, Jennifer Dimauro, David F. Tolin, Randy O. Frost, Gail Steketee
Psychology: Faculty Publications
Previous research indicates that people with hoarding sometimes under- or over-report the severity of their symptoms. This article examines the results of two separate studies that evaluate severity ratings made by participants with hoarding disorder (HD) in comparison to ratings by family members or independent evaluators. In Study 1, HD participants' ratings of the severity of the clutter in their home and their hoarding behaviors were less severe than those made by their friends or family members. This result may be accounted for by family members' rejecting attitudes towards the participant. In Study 2, HD participants appeared to under-report specific …

Characteristics Of Hoarding In Older Adults, Gretchen J. Diefenbach, Jennifer Dimauro, Randy O. Frost, Gail Steketee, David F. Tolin
Psychology: Faculty Publications
Objective: This study determined the clinical characteristics of late-life hoarding disorder (HD). Methods: Older adults (age 60 and older) with HD (n = 55) and without psychiatric diagnoses (n = 39) were compared on psychiatric, functional, cognitive, and health-related measures. Associations between age and clinical characteristics in a large sample of mixed age (n = 210; age range: 20-78) participants with HD were also determined. Results: Individuals with late-life HD were characterized by substantial impairments in psychiatric, functional, cognitive, and medical status. Health risks (e.g., risks of falls and fire) were also common. However, older age was generally not associated …

A Multitrait-Multimethod Matrix Investigation Of Hoarding, Joseph F. Meyer, Randy O. Frost, Timothy A. Brown, Gail Steketee, David F. Tolin
Psychology: Faculty Publications
Hoarding is a serious and potentially life-threatening mental health problem that, until recently, was considered a subtype of OCD. However, recent research suggests it is distinct and more prevalent than OCD. Three key defining features have emerged in factor analytic studies of hoarding scales: excessive acquisition, difficulty discarding, and excessive clutter. Covariation among these defining features has received limited attention. The primary aim of the current study was to examine the role of the three key features in defining hoarding disorder. Convergent and discriminant validity of the three hoarding factors were examined in a multitrait-multimethod matrix. A secondary aim was …
Vascular Depression: An Early Warning Sign Of Frailty, Daniel Paulson, Peter A. Lichtenberg
Vascular Depression: An Early Warning Sign Of Frailty, Daniel Paulson, Peter A. Lichtenberg
Psychology Faculty Research Publications
Objectives: Frailty is a common geriatric disorder associated with ADL impairment, hospitalization, and death. Phenomenological evidence suggests that late-life depression (Katz, 2004), particularly vascular depression, may be a risk factor for frailty. This study tests that hypothesis.
Methods: We identified a sample of stroke-free women over the age of 80 from the Health and Retirement Survey. The sample included 984 respondents in 2000 (incidence sample). Of these, 459 were non-frail at baseline and still alive in 2004 (prevalence sample). Frail respondents experienced at least three of the following: wasting, exhaustion, weakness, slowness, and falls. Vascular depression was represented using two …
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of An Internet-Based Behavioral Program For Increasing Physical Activity With And Without A Behavioral Coach, Diego Alejandro Valbuena
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of An Internet-Based Behavioral Program For Increasing Physical Activity With And Without A Behavioral Coach, Diego Alejandro Valbuena
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Obesity is a problem of vast social concern in the United States. One factor that has been linked to reduction in body fat and the health problems associated with obesity is increasing physical activity. Although in-person behavioral interventions have been shown effective at increasing physical activity, attention is now being placed on disseminating these interventions through the use of technology. Several internet-based interventions have been developed and are readily available. The purpose of this study was to evaluate "Fitbit," a web-based behavioral intervention for increasing physical activity and losing weight. Additionally, this study examined if the addition of contact from …
Evaluation Of Using An Interrupted Behavior Chain Procedure To Teach Mands To Children With Autism, Blair Nichole Jacobsen
Evaluation Of Using An Interrupted Behavior Chain Procedure To Teach Mands To Children With Autism, Blair Nichole Jacobsen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
Interrupted behavior chain procedures have been shown to be an effective way to teach individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism to mand for missing objects and information concerning missing objects. Research has shown that an interrupted behavior chain procedure is more effective than traditional mand teach trials, which occur at the onset of a behavior chain or in a massed trial format. However, there is a lack of research evaluating the use of interrupted behavior chain procedures to teach vocal mands for missing items and the possible generalization effects thereof. This study evaluated the acquisition of vocal mands for …

An Evaluation On The Effects Of Check-In/Check-Out With School-Aged Children Residing In A Mental Health Treatment Facility, Crystal Ann Stuart
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (SWPBIS) is an evidence- based application of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to address and prevent problem behaviors from occurring, promote pro-social behaviors, and create a positive learning environment for all students. There are many secondary interventions that have been utilized within the framework of SWPBIS that have high success rates. However, the research conducted on the use of Check-In/Check-Out (CICO), a secondary intervention, has focused its attention more on its effectiveness in public elementary schools. There is a lack of research evaluating the effectiveness of CICO in alternative school settings. This study provides an …
Comparison Of Acquisition Rates And Child Preference For Varying Amounts Of Teacher Directedness When Teaching Intraverbals, Victoria Lynn Smith
Comparison Of Acquisition Rates And Child Preference For Varying Amounts Of Teacher Directedness When Teaching Intraverbals, Victoria Lynn Smith
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The intraverbal is argued to be the most socially significant verbal operant and yet it is the least studied. Heal and Hanley (2011) suggest that different teaching strategies will lead to different rates of acquisition and child-preference with the tacting operant. This study continued this research into the realm of intraverbals, with focus on whether the embedded teaching strategy could be punishing on play or engaging in learning opportunities. The teaching strategies of discovery teaching, embedded prompting, and direct teaching were compared to see which strategy correlated with higher rates of acquisition and higher child preference. The study utilized a …
Effects Of Response Cards On The Disruptive Behavior Of Students, Leslie S. Singer
Effects Of Response Cards On The Disruptive Behavior Of Students, Leslie S. Singer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
This study examined the effects of response cards (RC) on student disruptive behavior, responding, and accuracy of responding during whole-class guided-reading instruction in a first-grade classroom. The authors combined two baseline conditions with an alternating treatments design and then replicated the effects across four teacher-nominated students. The first baseline condition was the teacher's typical instruction format, where one student who raised his/her hand was called upon to respond to the teacher's question. The second baseline condition (BL') was the same as the first baseline with an additional control for the number of teacher-delivered questions to the class per session. …
A Comparison Of A Matrix Programming And Standard Discrete Trial Training Format To Teach Two-Component Tacts, Emily Braff
A Comparison Of A Matrix Programming And Standard Discrete Trial Training Format To Teach Two-Component Tacts, Emily Braff
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Teaching using matrix programming has been shown to result in recombinative generalization. However, this procedure has not been compared to more standard discrete trial training formats such as DTT. This study compared acquisition and recombinative generalization of two-component tacts using each procedure. Matrix training was found to be more efficient than the DTT format. Half the amount of teaching was required to teach roughly the same number of targets using matrix training as compared to DTT.
The Effects Of Video Self-Evaluation On Skill Acquisition With Yoga Postures, Holly Elizabeth Downs
The Effects Of Video Self-Evaluation On Skill Acquisition With Yoga Postures, Holly Elizabeth Downs
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study evaluated the use of video self-evaluation and video feedback procedures to enhance the accuracy of yoga poses. In the self-evaluation intervention participants watched their behaviors via video and scored task analyses for feedback for each pose. In the video feedback intervention, the participants and the researcher together scored the task analyses for the behaviors along with practice during video recordings. The interventions were assessed in a multiple baseline across behaviors design. Results showed that both video self-evaluation increased the accuracy of all poses and video feedback further increased the accuracy on one pose for one participant
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A Tablet Application To Increase Eye Contact In Children Diagnosed With Autism, Tricia Jeffries
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A Tablet Application To Increase Eye Contact In Children Diagnosed With Autism, Tricia Jeffries
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Studies have shown that increasing eye contact can be accomplished by using reinforcement, prompting, shaping, functional movement training, punishment, and self-monitoring. However, there is a lack of research that evaluates the use of technology as a way to increase eye contact. This study tested the effectiveness of a tablet application at increasing eye contact in children diagnosed with autism. The application requires the child to look at a picture of a person's face and identify the number displayed in the person's eyes in order to receive reinforcement. Data was collected immediately after training, one hour after training, and in the …
An Evaluation Of The Family-Centered Prevent-Teach-Reinforce Model With Families Of Young Children With Developmental Disabilities, Kathleen Bailey
An Evaluation Of The Family-Centered Prevent-Teach-Reinforce Model With Families Of Young Children With Developmental Disabilities, Kathleen Bailey
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Daily routines in the home are typically the most common interactions for children with their siblings and parents. When a child exhibits challenging behavior in these routines, it can cause a strain on the family as well as the child's ability to learn a more appropriate behavior. This study examined the feasibility and potential efficacy of an adapted version of the Prevent-Teach- Reinforce (PTR) intervention with three families of young children with developmental disabilities. The school-based PTR manual was adapted for treatment use in a family context. The study assessed the family adherence to the collaboratively developed PTR intervention, family …
Verbal Operant Transfer With Mands And Tacts Using Multiple Exemplars, Jessica Lauren Shea
Verbal Operant Transfer With Mands And Tacts Using Multiple Exemplars, Jessica Lauren Shea
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Research on the functional independence of tacts and mands is mixed. The conditions under which tact training transfers to mands are unclear. The current study evaluated whether multiple exemplars of tact training followed by mand training would result in the independent transfer from tacts to mands. It was shown that all three participants started manding for the item independently during tact training after one sequence of tact training followed by mand training.
Adolescent Dating Violence And Romantic Relationship Attachment In Young Adulthood: The Effects Of Relationship Commitment And Perceptions Of Alterability, Jennifer Marie Pierce
Adolescent Dating Violence And Romantic Relationship Attachment In Young Adulthood: The Effects Of Relationship Commitment And Perceptions Of Alterability, Jennifer Marie Pierce
Wayne State University Theses
Romantic relationships are crucial to adolescents' development. These relationships fulfill numerous goals such as independence and intimacy (Bouchey & Furman, 2003; Sanderson & Cantor, 1995; Zimmer-Gembeck & Petherick, 2006). Because these relationships determine adolescents' successful attainment of important developmental objectives, negative relationships or experiences may impact later behavior, attitudes, beliefs and expectations (Connolly, Furman, & Konarski, 2000; Crockett & Crouter, 1995; Deal & Wampler, 1986; Furman, 2002; Magdol, Moffitt, Caspi, & Silva, 1998). Physical and sexual violence within adolescent romantic relationships is quite common; studies suggest that up to half of all girls have experienced dating violence (Arriaga & Foshee, …

Psychology: Faculty Publications
Background Hoarding disorder (HD) is currently being considered for inclusion in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), yet remains poorly understood. Consensus is building that hoarding may constitute a separate disorder, although comorbidity remains high and complicates the diagnostic picture. The purpose of this investigation was to explore patterns of comorbidity among people who engage in hoarding behavior in order to better understand its clinical presentation and phenomenology. Methods Data were collected from a large internet sample (N = 363) of people who self-identified as having hoarding problems, met criteria for clinically significant hoarding, and …
Applying Systems Thinking To Aviation Psychology, Nancy G. Leveson
Applying Systems Thinking To Aviation Psychology, Nancy G. Leveson
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2013
Hazard analysis is at the heart of system safety. It can be described succinctly as “investigating an accident before it happens.” A hazard is selected, such as two aircraft violating minimum separation standards or an aircraft losing sufficient lift to maintain altitude, and then the scenarios that can lead to that hazardous state are identified. Hazards are informally defined here as precursor states to accidents that the designer never wants the system to get into purposely. The resulting scenarios or potential paths to the hazard are then used to compute the probability of the hazardous state occurring or to design …
Air Transport Incident And Accidents Caused By Crew Situation Awareness Errors, Robert L. Arnold
Air Transport Incident And Accidents Caused By Crew Situation Awareness Errors, Robert L. Arnold
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2013
This paper examines the various aircrew situation evaluation errors that resulted in one near fatal commercial airline incident and two fatal commercial airline accidents. The incident and accidents involved events that distracted the aircrews from a timely and accurate evaluation of the emergency situations that confronted them. Summary narratives of the incident and each of accidents are provided. Each emergency situation is examined to identify the distractions that caused the crews to misinterpret the nature of the emergencies they faced. Situation awareness as a construct is briefly reviewed. Recommendations for situation awareness training for aircrews are made. Recommendations are also …
An Evaluation Of Staff Reactivity Following Performance Feedback And Self-Monitoring Procedures In A Group Home Setting, Samantha Lynn Fuesy
An Evaluation Of Staff Reactivity Following Performance Feedback And Self-Monitoring Procedures In A Group Home Setting, Samantha Lynn Fuesy
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Research has investigated staff management procedures that produce treatment adherence and maintenance over time. Treatment integrity is one of the most important aspects of staff management; without adequate treatment adherence, behavior analysts are unable to determine whether treatment is effective, function has been identified, or intervention revisions are needed. The literature on staff management procedures has demonstrated that performance feedback and self-monitoring are effective procedures for increasing treatment integrity of behavior plans in the presence of the observer, however, few studies have evaluated the effectiveness of these procedures when the observer is absent. This study evaluated the effectiveness of performance …

An Evaluation Of Self Management To Increase On Task Behavior With Individuals Diagnosed With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder, Lindsey C. Slattery
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the leading diagnoses for children. Children diagnosed with ADHD often have difficulty in many settings including at school as well as in the home. Medication is often a common treatment for these children, however, it has been often shown ineffective when used alone. A review of behavioral interventions, including various self-regulation interventions has been studied. Self-regulation interventions have been shown to be effective for children diagnosed with ADHD primarily in school or academic settings. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a self-management intervention on the on-task behavior of children …
