Creative Arts Therapies Students' Professional Development: Mixed Methods Longitudinal Research, Hod Orkibi

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

This mixed-methods longitudinal study sought to describe, understand, and explain the professional development (PD) of graduate students during art therapy (AT), dance movement therapy (DMT), and drama therapy (DT) training (N = 51).

Repeated measures of students’ scores in profession-related variables were performed. Quantitative theory testing probed the extent to which students confirm Rønnestad and Skovholt’s (2003) theory of counselors and therapists’ PD as representative of their pre-training and in-training experiences. Qualitative theory derivation generated data-driven concepts to modify and refine the extant theory. Data were collected using My Vocational Situation, Career Commitment Measurement, and questionnaires for each developmental phase. …

African American Adolescents At Risk: Their Stories Revealed Through Dance/Movement Therapy, Alicia Marie Williams

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

The purpose ofthis study was originally to support the voices of African American adolescents and the emergence of their stories through the use of mentors hip, dance/movement therapy, and the production of an artistic performance. But what I truly found was that through parallel processing this study turned into an artistic inquiry that helped me uncover more insight about my own story: a story ofloss, isolation, rejection, recovery, independence, support and acceptance, and confidence.

As a result of the artistic inquiry I was able to see the value of my knowledge from integrating my experiences. I developed confidence in my …

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

The purpose of my research is to investigate how adverse experiences can be a source of emotional positive transformation and growth. Using artistic inquiry, I hope to address the questions, “How can I maintain a sense of safety in an unsafe and ever-changing environment such as the inpatient psychiatric unit” and “How does my passion for dance/movement help me to survive and nurture self under these circumstances?” Using movement as my primary expressive medium, I will explore common themes and patterns that may arise through videoing and journaling my processes in response to these questions. Through an understanding of my …

Emerging Therapist, Growing Child: Developing A Relationship With A Child With Reactive Attachment Disorder, Kirsten Young Dec 2010

Emerging Therapist, Growing Child: Developing A Relationship With A Child With Reactive Attachment Disorder, Kirsten Young

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

Children who have had severe early childhood experiences of neglect, abuse, and/or abrupt separation from their caregivers between the ages of six months and three years are at risk for developing reactive attachment disorder. In one form of reactive attachment disorder, known as the inhibited type, the child fails to initiate interactions and positively respond in social situations. Such behaviors make it challenging for therapists to establish therapeutic relationships with children who have been diagnosed with the inhibited type of reactive attachment disorder. The purpose of this case study is to present the challenges, successes, and reactions of a neophyte …

Reminiscence Of An Elderly Woman: An Artistic Inquiry, Cathy Gamby-Weideman May 2010

Reminiscence Of An Elderly Woman: An Artistic Inquiry, Cathy Gamby-Weideman

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

This thesis explores the clinical value to the elderly population of combining reminiscence and dance. This five month collaboration between a recently widowed elderly female and a dance/movement therapy intern culminated in a 13 minute choreographed dance performance. Themes that emerged during this art-based study were her relationship with her husband, her role as his primary caregiver and her grief after his death. Dance Therapy, Darcy Gene Feuerbach Jan 2009

Dance Therapy, Darcy Gene Feuerbach

Graduate Research Papers

"The arts, often a source of joy and expression, have helped us to say what we could not say in words" says Fran Levy, who is a psychotherapist and creative arts therapist. Whether it is music or drama, art or dance, all of the arts can have implications for the counseling process. This project focuses specifically on Dance Movement Therapy. Dance/movement therapy has been developing ever since the early 1900s and it is based on the notion that mind and body are inseparable. (Levy 1)

Dance Therapy And Self-Concept Change In Psychiatric Patients, Cheryl Jeanne Hall

Dissertations and Theses

This study investigated the effects of various forms of therapy (individual, occupational, and dance) on self-concept. Subjects were 29 psychiatric patients at Providence Medical Center who volunteered to participate in this study. The Tennessee Self-Concept Scale (TSCS) was used to measure self-concept both at time of admission and prior to discharge. The data were analyzed in a step-wise multiple regression to determine which of the various forms of therapy are the best predictors of self-concept at second TSCS application. The results of the step-wise multiple regression did not support the hypothesis that exposure to dance therapy would be a significant …
