Purpose: Systemic treatment of colorectal cancer involves chemotherapeutic agents which elicit serious and negative side effects from the toxicity of the drug. To address this issue, we are testing dietary supplements for their efficacy against human colon cancer cell lines and also their potential synergistic effects when combined with conventional chemotherapy. Dietary supplements (specifically sesamol and black rice extract) exhibit anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and chemo-preventive properties. Meanwhile, one of the cancer resistance mechanisms is the upregulation of drug elimination mechanisms, leading to multi-drug resistance. Computational studies to determine the binding site of ORG27569, a negative allosteric modulator, within the cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) reveal an intracellular binding domain as the most favorable binding site for ORG27569.

Influenza virus is a contagious respiratory pathogen that infects hundreds of thousands of people a year, making it a serious global health concern. The virus has a rapid mutation rate and has developed resistance to current antiviral agents, making it a difficult target for effective treatment. There is an increasing need to identify new treatments for Influenza. Recently, we have tested nutraceuticals as an effective alternative for blocking Influenza. We have tested Jamaican Sorrel, Black Currant Berries, and Manuka Honey paired with Bee Pollen for antiviral activity. Herbal supplement sales in the U.S. increased by 7.5% between 2014 and 2015, from $6.441 billion to $6.922 billion, according to newly released data from the Nutrition Business Journal (NBJ). Dietary supplements and over-the-counter medications (OTC’s) do not have to be proven safe or effective before being sold to consumers like prescription medications. Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, manufacturers only have to prove their product causes no harm to consumers. Dietary supplement labels are not reliable, since they are not regulated. Without verification a consumer cannot be sure that what is stated on the label …

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. and millions of novel cancer cases are being diagnosed each year. While chemotherapy and ionizing radiation are effective treatments against these malignant tumors, the adverse effects that accompany such treatments are devastating. In order to find alternative treatment methods with less side effects, we turn to Eastern herbal medicine. Many patients go without access to contemporary or traditional Western medicine due to lack of quality health insurance. Thus, more patients are turning to other less expensive, alternative forms of treatment. Our analysis of several different community-pharmacies in Maine, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky showed that many practicing pharmacists know little about these types of alternative therapies, and make little effort answering questions and/or making a safe recommendation about these products. Two OTCs were chosen with purpose: Calcium with Vitamin D and Grape Seed Extract. A convenience sample of pharmacies and pharmacists were selected based on travel time and location. Pharmacists …
