Chlamydia trachomatis infection is the most commonly reported sexually transmitted disease in the United States and the world. This pathogen can cause long-term health problems including blindness, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and ectopic pregnancy, which can be life-threatening if left untreated. To this day, there is no chlamydia-specific drug on the market. The standard treatment uses broad-spectrum antibiotics, which may affect regular functions of the commensal microbiota and leads to the development of bacterial resistance.
