A Descriptive Investigation Of The Impact Of Student Research Projects Arising From Elective Research Courses, Sam Harirforoosh, David W. Stewart
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Background: Pharmacy academicians have noted the need to develop research skills in student pharmacists. At the Gatton College of Pharmacy, significant focus has been placed on the development of research skills through offering elective research courses. In order to evaluate the impact of participation in the research elective(s), we analyzed college records and surveyed faculty members with regard to the number of poster/podium presentations, published peer-reviewed manuscripts, and funded projects.
Results: Student enrollment in the research elective sequence has increased over time and has resulted in 81 poster presentations, 14 podium presentations, and 15 peer-reviewed publications.
Conclusions: …

Perceptions Of Licensed Pharmacist Managers Regarding Formally Versus Informally Trained Pharmacy Technicians, Shalonica Marie Cluse
Perceptions Of Licensed Pharmacist Managers Regarding Formally Versus Informally Trained Pharmacy Technicians, Shalonica Marie Cluse
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Pharmacists rely on pharmacy technicians to assist with accurately dispensing prescriptions and providing information to clients. Texas does not have regulations for the education or training of pharmacy technicians, which may result in mistakes when dispensing prescriptions, causing significant harm to customers. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was assessing formally and informally trained pharmacy technicians' job performance as perceived by licensed pharmacists/managers. Data were collected via face to face interviews with 9 pharmacy managers in Texas to gain insight into their lived experiences of supervising not formally and formally trained technicians. Audio recorded interview data were transcribed and …

Faculty Publications & Research of the TUC College of Pharmacy
Objective. To assess the prevalence, methods, and motivations for didactic cheating among pharmacy students and to determine predictive factors for cheating in pharmacy colleges and schools.
Methods. A 45-item cross-sectional survey was conducted at all four doctor of pharmacy programs in Northern California. For data analysis, t test, Fisher exact test, and logistic regression were used.
Results. Overall, 11.8% of students admitted to cheating in pharmacy school. Primary motivations for cheating included fear of failure, procrastination, and stress. In multivariate analysis, the only predictor for cheating in pharmacy school was a history of cheating in undergraduate studies.
Conclusion. Cheating occurs …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Objectives: To determine the impact of pharmacist-provided educational seminars on the participant’s perception of the pharmacist’s role in providing women’s health education. Secondary objectives include the participant’s level of perceived benefit from the information provided during each presentation, as well as determining characteristics of participants who are interested in attending seminars.
Methods: This is a prospective study conducted within a homeless women’s shelter in Phoenix, Arizona. Pharmacists and pharmacy students provided 10 monthly educational seminars on topics related to women’s health. Participants completed a pre- and post-seminar survey regarding their perceptions of the presentations and pharmacists.

Background: A National Pharmacist Workforce Survey (NPW) survey is being conducted in the US every five years. The 2009- NPW project surveyed 1,391 participants, of which only 12 participants were from West Virginia. Therefore, such a small representation of West Virginian pharmacists may question the validity of extrapolating the results of the 2009 NPW survey to pharmacists in this state. As a result, a separate survey was needed to answer the questions about the perceived workload, work characteristics, and demographics for West Virginian pharmacists.
Objectives: The primary objective of this investigation was to identify the pharmacists’ perceptions of workload in …
Methylphenidate And Dexmethylphenidate Formulations In Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, David Sugrue
Methylphenidate And Dexmethylphenidate Formulations In Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, David Sugrue
Honors Scholar Theses
Purpose: To review the current literature on the various extended-release methylphenidate stimulant preparations regarding safety and efficacy in children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Summary: The literature reviewed establishes the efficacy of the different long-acting methylphenidate stimulant formulations in treating children and adolescents with ADHD. Comparing and contrasting the different extended-release preparations allows for clinicians to help tailor ADHD treatments to individual patients. The extended release methylphenidate products provide the same efficacy as the immediate release formulations, but add the convenience of less frequent dosing. There are a few options for patients with difficulty swallowing tablets or capsules, including …

Pharmacists' Preparedness For Acute Medical Emergencies, James W. Parrett
Pharmacists' Preparedness For Acute Medical Emergencies, James W. Parrett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Purpose/Objectives: This project studied how prepared community pharmacists are to respond to acute medical emergencies, as well as their perceived efficacy in addressing these situations. Specifically, it considered what training pharmacists have for responding to medical emergencies, what emergency medical equipment pharmacies have on-hand, the frequency that medical emergencies occur within pharmacies, and the types of emergencies encountered. It also measured self and collective efficacy of pharmacists in responding to medical emergencies within their pharmacy to determine if differences in self-efficacy or collective efficacy exist. Methods: This study utilized a cross-sectional, non-experimental, descriptive design via a self-administered, Internet-based survey distributed …

A Gender Gap Grade Analysis Of Hard Sciences Courses In A School Of Pharmacy, Mckenzie C. Ferguson, Cathy Santanello, Erika Hahn, Ron Worthington
Pharmacy Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
A student survey was conducted to determine perceptions of such things as differential treatment due to gender, level of preparedness for courses in the hard sciences, and gender performances of students in the sciences. Additionally, students’ grades of sixteen courses with a heavy hard science focus were analyzed by taking the percent of a letter grade sorted by male or female to determine if there was a significant gender difference in the final grades. Our objectives were to: 1) determine if the underrepresentation of women in some health-related jobs is due to discouragement of females to enter these professions or …

Acute Pharmacological Treatment Given To Older Adults With Acute Myocardial Infarction: A Nationwide Emergency Department Study, 1992-2010, Maryam S. Alowayesh
Theses and Dissertations
OBJECTIVES: To determine the pattern and predictors of use of antiplatelet agents and beta-blockers given in the emergency department (ED) to older adults with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and its effects on in-hospital mortality and length of hospital stay (LOS) and to determine the effect of computerized ED guideline reminders on their utilization. METHODS: A cross-sectional study using the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS) ED data for years 1992 to 2010 was conducted. Patients were included if they had an admission diagnosis of AMI (ICD-9-CM code 410.xx) and were ≥55 years. Survey logistic regression was used to examine …

Pharmacy Presentations, Posters, and Grand Rounds
Clinical Importance
- Small volume parenteral (SVP) medications are batch-processed once daily at a 900+ bed academic medical center
- Labels are printed 36 hours before medications are due and prepared and delivered for a 24-hour period
- Therapy changes, discontinuations or patient transfers lead to increased rework, missing doses, and ultimately waste
- Lean methodology was originally developed as a production philosophy and quality
- system with an emphasis on problem solving, partnership, and process improvement1-3
- The Lean philosophy emphasizes the continual identification and elimination of waste in order to maximize value1
- Lean has been used in healthcare with great success4-5
