Influenza Vaccination Coverage In Pediatric Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Kelly Brown
Influenza Vaccination Coverage In Pediatric Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Kelly Brown
Senior Theses
Background: Children with chronic health conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), are at especially high risk for influenza infection and complications. The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation and American College of Gastroenterology recommend that IBD patients should receive annual influenza vaccination. The aims of this study were to evaluate influenza vaccination coverage over time and identify predictors of flu vaccination in pediatric IBD and non-IBD patients.
Methods: We utilized longitudinal data (2000 to 2016) from South Carolina Medicaid to conduct a matched cohort study. The primary exposure of interest was IBD diagnosis based upon ICD-9/10 diagnosis codes. Children with IBD were …

How Do Pharmacies Evaluate Cleanroom Automation Systems?, Kenneth Maxik, Craig Kimble, Alberto Coustasse, Chris Booth
Pharmacy Practice & Administration
Many pharmacies have implemented or considered implementing cleanroom automation or compounding systems. Intravenous (IV) admixture automation is one of the newest areas of technology that has been applied to pharmacy workflow. Manufacturers tout systems for reducing errors reaching patients. Clinical literature supports that cleanroom technology can aid in patient safety.

Over-The-Counter Availability Of Levonorgestrel Emergency Contraception In Pharmacies On Oahu, Jennifer Chin, Jennifer Salcedo, Shandhini Raidoo
School of Medicine Publications
Since the United States Food and Drug Administration’s approval of over-the-counter levonorgestrel emergency contraception, access to this time-sensitive medication has improved. However, multiple barriers, including the cost of the medication and pharmacy availability, still exist. The objective of this study was to determine the over-the-counter availability of levonorgestrel emergency contraception in pharmacies on Oahu, Hawaii. We conducted a cross-sectional population-based study using in-person simulated patient encounters at all pharmacies on Oahu. Out of 109 chain pharmacies and 13 independent pharmacies, 102 (84%) pharmacies had levonorgestrel emergency contraception available over the counter. Of pharmacies in which it was available, 12.7% required …

Counseling On Exercise: The Pharmacist's Role, Katelyn Hettinger
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Only one in three adults in the United States meets the weekly physical activity recommendations, and only 5% of adults are active for at least 30 minutes a day.1 Exercise is a key component of health and wellness, especially for patients already experiencing comorbid conditions. Exercise has been proven to help alleviate pain in patients experiencing anything from low back pain to fibromyalgia and has been a helpful adjunct in diabetes management.2 Pharmacists are in an exciting position to advocate for changes in patients’ lifestyles daily and are in an incredibly accessible position to do so. However, exercise …

Utilization Of A Community Pharmacy-Based Service For The Treatment Of Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections In Scotland, Robert Borchardt
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Introduction: In November 2013, Scotland piloted a program in Grampian for the treatment of Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) in community pharmacies, increasing health access for patients and reducing general practitioner workload. This program became known as ‘Pharmacy First’ and was later implemented nationwide in November 2017. This paper seeks to understand utilization of the Pharmacy First program across Scotland by patients and potential barriers to access.
Methods: Using data from the Prescribing Information System collected by the National Health Service of Scotland from July 2013 to April 2019, orders for uncomplicated UTIs were gathered by examining all nitrofurantoin and trimethoprim …

ABSTRACT
Purpose: An interprofessional peer teaching activity was designed and implemented to provide students with an opportunity to practice interprofessional education collaborative (IPEC) competencies while improving student knowledge of assistive devices for gait and medications impacting safe ambulation. Method: During the activity, second year physical therapy students instructed third year pharmacy students in the accurate fit and counseling for use of canes, crutches, and walkers. Pharmacy students then demonstrated these skills and were checked off on their ability to accurately fit and instruct consumers on basic gait patterns. The pharmacy students in turn educated the physical therapy students about medications …

Using Community Pharmacy Immunization Screening Forms To Identify Potential Immunization Opportunities, Albert T. Bach, Jeffery A. Goad
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Immunization screening forms are completed for each patient that is to be vaccinated in the pharmacy. Screening forms contain demographic and health questions, which are used to determine if a patient is contraindicated to receive a vaccine. The objective is to determine if patient responses to questions on these forms can be used to identify potential vaccine indications. De-identified data was retrospectively collected from 11 community pharmacies in California and Michigan that included basic demographics, answers to immunization screening questions, and vaccine(s) administered during that visit. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations were used to forecast vaccine needs …

Legislation Across The Nation And The Impact On Pharmacy Practice, Sabrina Hamman, Hannah Lamb, Jennifer Harklerode, Elizabeth Kramer, Steven Martin
Pharmacy and Wellness Review
Pharmacy legislation is constantly being updated, giving pharmacists a larger role in the health care field. In the past 20 years, pharmacists have seen expansions to legislation involving contraceptive authority, medical marijuana, vaccines and provider status. There is a greater pharmacist impact from legislation passed on the state level in comparison to the national level. As a result, pharmacists have different opportunities to provide new and advanced services to patients based on the state in which they are practicing. Comparing these various laws across the nation allows the profession to determine which sections of the law are problematic and which …

The Role Of Using Formative Assessments In Problem-Based Learning: A Health Sciences Education Perspective, Kristi W. Kelley, Julaine M. Fowlin, Andrew A. Tawfik, Max C. Anderson
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
Practitioners in the field of pharmacy are often confronted with ill-structured problems. Specifically, pharmacists are tasked with making patient-specific recommendations that are both safe and effective, which requires combining knowledge from the biomedical, behavioral, and pharmaceutical sciences. Given the dynamic nature of pharmacy as a profession, the field has begun to explore learning strategies that go beyond mere content coverage to strategies that better support higher-order learning outcomes. One of these approaches is problem-based learning (PBL). While studies have focused on how to support PBL to improve learning outcomes, the role of assessment is often overlooked. Further exploration is thus …
