Personalized And Culturally Tailored Features Of Mobile Apps For Gestational Diabetes Mellitus And Their Impact On Patient Self-Management: Scoping Review, Catherine Jones, Yi Cui, Ruth Jeminiwa, Elina Bajracharya, Katie Chang, Tony Ma

College of Pharmacy Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is an increasingly common high-risk pregnancy condition requiring intensive daily self-management, placing the burden of care directly on the patient. Understanding personal and cultural differences among patients is critical for delivering optimal support for GDM self-management, particularly in high-risk populations. Although mobile apps for GDM self-management are being used, limited research has been done on the personalized and culturally tailored features of these apps and their impact on patient self-management.

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to explore the extent to which published studies report the integration and effectiveness of personalized and culturally tailored features in …

Design, Synthesis, And Nmr-Guided Characterization Of A Targeted Covalent Inhibitor-Like Molecule Against Ivyp1 From P. Aeruginosa, Samuel Taylor Moore

Master's Theses

Multi-drug resistance poses a serious threat to future generations and historical antibiotic pipelines; consequently, the medical and economic burdens associated with treating multidrug-resistant bacteria are substantiated. In this context, P. aeruginosa (PA) emerges as one of the most significant healthcare challenges, being a leading cause of resistance-associated mortality worldwide. Despite modern efforts to combat these poor outcomes, drug-resistant cases continue to rise, and the need for novel antibiotic treatment is apparent. To this end, we investigated relevant resistance mechanisms and past antibiotic targets within PA, and in doing so, we identified relationships between peptidoglycan biology and a periplasmic protein, Inhibitor …

A Conjugate Of An Egfr-Binding Peptide And Doxorubicin Shows Selective Toxicity To Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Cells, Phi-Phung Than, Shih-Jing Yao, Emad Althagafi, Kamaljit Kaur

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Selective targeting of cancer cells via overexpressed cell-surface receptors is a promising strategy to enhance chemotherapy efficacy and minimize off-target side effects. In this study, we designed peptide 31 (YHWYGYTPERVI) to target the overexpressed epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells. Peptide 31 is internalized by TNBC cells through EGFR-mediated endocytosis and shares sequence and structural similarities with human EGF (hEGF), a natural EGFR ligand. Unlike hEGF, peptide 31 does not induce cell migration in TNBC cells. A novel conjugate of peptide 31 with doxorubicin (Dox) retains selectivity for TNBC cells and exhibits significant toxicity comparable …

Pharmacy

Pholcodine, an anti-tussive medication widely used as an over-the-counter, OTC drug, has recently faced restrictions in several countries. This paper presents a sensitive electrochemical approach for pholcodine detection. The electrochemical method involved fabricating a graphene nanoplatelets electrode, incorporating polythiophene nanospheres polymer to promote electron transfer and increase the activated surface area. Characterization of the fabricated electrode was performed using transmission electron microscopy, ATR-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The electrochemical behavior of pholcodine with the fabricated electrode was investigated using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, square wave voltammetry (SWV), and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The developed …

Garcinia Pedunculata Roxb. Ex Buch.-Ham. Leaf Extract Ameliorates Diabetes In Streptozotocin Induced Diabetes In Rats, Kangkan Kalita, Techi Gello, Nilutpal Sharma Bora, Zothan Puia

Bulletin of Faculty of Pharmacy Cairo University

Although medicinal plants have been historically used for diabetes treatment throughout the world, few of them have been validated by scientific criteria. Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder manifests as elevated blood glucose levels when the body cannot create sufficient amounts of insulin or utilize the insulin produced. This may be due to the free radicals present in the body. The antioxidants help to neutralize the free radicals by donating electron and thus protect from various oxidative stress diseases. The aim of this work is to evaluate the preliminary phytochemical screening, in vitro antioxidant study, in vitro and in vivo …

Bile Duct Ligation-Induced Cirrhosis Does Not Alter The Blood-Brain Barrier Permeability To Sucrose In Rats, Mohammad K. Miah, Ulrich Bickel, Reza Mehvar

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Contradictory results have been reported about the effects of liver diseases on the blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability to markers. For instance, both an increase and no change in the BBB permeability to BBB markers sodium fluorescein and Evans blue have been reported in experimental cholestasis induced by bile duct ligation (BDL) in rats. These contradictory effects might be due to inherent limitations of these markers and/or methodological issues. Here, we investigated the time course of the impact of BDL in rats on BBB permeability using a recently developed stable isotope labeled marker [13C]sucrose, which is expected to be …

Computational Logp Calculations And Determination Of Lipophilicity Values Of Fluorinated Morphine Derivatives, Mirabella Romano, Allison Vu, Emily Chen

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The addictive effect of opioids impacted 60 million people globally in 2023. This opioid crisis necessitates the development of opioid derivatives that maintain analgesic efficacy while minimizing addictive effects from opioid use. The present work focuses on morphine, a commonly prescribed opioid with high affinity to the mu-opioid receptor (MOR). Morphine binds non-selectively within both healthy and inflamed tissue. By modifying morphine’s structure through fluorination to counteract its non-selective binding, the drug’s pharmacological ability to provide effective pain relief comes with a lower risk of addiction. Specifically, the addition of fluorine to differing beta positions of the main binding site …

This study found that anti-pseudomonal (PsA) coverage is overutilized in diabetic foot infection (DFI), even when broad qualifying criteria are applied. The proposed criteria were poor predictors of PsA growth, which was present in a small number of cases. Patients who did grow PsA were somewhat more likely to have severe DFI, history of DFI, and 90-day history of admission or anti-PsA antibiotic use, but many patients without PsA growth also met these criteria.

Tenecteplase For Acute Ischemic Stroke: Insights From A Large Community Teaching Hospital, Ithar Alsarraf, Jennifer Pilotto, Rebecca E. Baker, Emily Reich

Posters

Acute Ischemic Stroke (AIS) is a leading cause of disability and death in the United States, requiring urgent treatment1,2; earlier treatment improves patient outcomes.

Fibrinolytic agents including alteplase and tenecteplase (TNK) reduce long-term disability in AIS but are associated with hemorrhagic risks3,4.

As of January 2024, Corewell Health East hospitals updated their guidelines that TNK would be the first line agent in the treatment of AIS.

Alteplase is the only approved agent for AIS, but TNK shows similar effectiveness along with shorter preparation and administration time which may ultimately improve door-to-needle time2 .

Careful consideration of patient characteristics is important …

Subtype. Specifically, NCP172 and NCP245 tumors grew faster and were predominantly triple- negative than NCP245. RNA sequencing identified many differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between tumor and mammary gland controls. Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) of the DEGs revealed that pathways like Deubiquitination, Cell Cycle Checkpoints, RHO GTPase cycle, and HIF1α Signaling were associated with aggressive tumor characteristics, with heightened pathway activity in NCP172 likely contributing to greater growth and invasiveness.

This study further examined how different cells-of-origin contribute to breast cancer heterogeneity by inducing mutant p53 in either mammary myoepithelial or luminal cells. Tumors originating from myoepithelial cells (Tk5) exhibited …

This study found that higher doses of droperidol for abdominal pain could provide more analgesic benefit without compromising patient safety. While droperidol appears effective at relieving nausea, other more cost-effective anti-emetics may be trialed first (without diphenhydramine). Droperidol appeared to provide light sedation, although most doses were low and used on patients without severe agitation (e.g. RASS ≥ 3).
