Nasal Dosage Forms Of Propranol, Anwar A. Hussain, Shinichiro Hirai, Rima Bawarshi Jul 1983

Nasal Dosage Forms Of Propranol, Anwar A. Hussain, Shinichiro Hirai, Rima Bawarshi

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents

The invention relates to a novel method of administering propranolol, a known β-adrenergic blocking agent widely used in the treatment of angina pectoris, arrhythmias, hypertension and other cardiac conditions, and migraine. The invention further relates to novel dosage forms of propranolol which are adapted for nasal administration and which include solutions, suspensions, gels and ointments.

Nasal Dosage Forms Containing Natural Female Sex Horomones, Anwar A. Hussain, Shinichiro Hirai, Rima Bawarshi May 1983

Nasal Dosage Forms Containing Natural Female Sex Horomones, Anwar A. Hussain, Shinichiro Hirai, Rima Bawarshi

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents

The invention relates to a novel method of administering the natural female sex hormones, 17 β-estradiol and progesterone, to achieve enhanced bioavailability thereof. The invention further relates to novel dosage forms of 17 β-estradiol and/or progesterone which are adapted for nasal administration, such as solutions, suspensions, gels and ointments. The dosage forms containing a combination of 17 β-estradiol and progesterone are particularly useful as contraceptives, while the dosage forms containing only one of the hormonal components find utility in the treatment of conditions such as menopause, menstrual disorders, etc., which are known to respond to administration of a natural or …

Apothecary

The Apothecary staff would like to congratulate the seniors who have worked hard to complete five years of education. The graduating seniors have been more than well prepared for what lies ahead in this profession. This you owe to the administration, the faculty, and to yourselves. You have met, accepted, and mastered the challenges encountered and for this, you are to be commended.

Lack Of Influence Of Commonly Used Drugs On Bioassay Indicator Organisms., Joseph T. Dipiro, A. Thomas Taylor, John C. H. Steele Jr. Jan 1983

Lack Of Influence Of Commonly Used Drugs On Bioassay Indicator Organisms., Joseph T. Dipiro, A. Thomas Taylor, John C. H. Steele Jr.

Publications from the Office of the Dean

Many commonly used pharmaceutical agents have been found to inhibit bacterial growth in vitro. Determinations of antimicrobial concentrations in sera of patients taking nonrecognized antibacterial agents could possibly be altered if bioassay systems are utilized for the determinations. We therefore attempted to determine the in vitro effect of commonly used drugs on bioassay indicator organisms. Fifty-one different agents (antihistamines, anticholinergics, central nervous system agents, cardiovascular agents, analgesics, steroids, muscle blockers, and other miscellaneous agents) were tested for inhibition or enhancement of the growth of Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. None of the agents tested exhibited any …

Evaluation Of Drug Information Retrieval Services For Selected Investigational Antineoplastic Agents, Ali Al-Hasan A Al-Hefzi Jan 1983

Evaluation Of Drug Information Retrieval Services For Selected Investigational Antineoplastic Agents, Ali Al-Hasan A Al-Hefzi

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The availability of drug information that is useful to clinicians is an important need for those responsible for medication use in patients. Physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and patients routinely require access to relevant information related to rational drug therapy. The need for rapid access to relevant information has become increasingly important as the science, technology, and specialization within health care expand. Because of this expansion the literature has increased not only in size but also in complexity.

The term drug information (e.g., used in drug information service, drug information center or drug information specialist) is defined as "knowledge of facts or …

Synthesis Of Mesoionic Nucleosides As Potential Antineoplastic Agents, Shanaz Mohammedali Tejani Jan 1983

Synthesis Of Mesoionic Nucleosides As Potential Antineoplastic Agents, Shanaz Mohammedali Tejani

Theses and Dissertations

During the past few decades, analogs of purine nucleosides have been described that are modified either in the heterocyclic base, sugar moiety or both, and many of these modified nucleosides display antiviral and/or antineoplastic activity. The Class II mesoionic purinones are isosteric with their non~mesoionic purinone counterparts. It is conceivable that the mesoionic purinone nucleosides might constitute an entirely novel class of modified nucleosides with potential chemotherapeutic activity. That the mesoionic heterobases are bioisosteric as well as isosteric with non-mesoionic purinones was realized by demonstrating that certain mesoionic xanthine derivatives, such as Anhydro-8-ethylw-5-hydroxy-7-oxo-l,3,4-thiadiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidinium hydroxide and Anhydro-6-p-chlorobenzyl-8-ethyl-5-hydroxy-7-oxo—l,3,4—thiadiazolo [3,2-a]pyrimidinium hydroxide were comparable …
