Background: Caffeine is available in an ampoule, used via parenteral and enteral routes in preterm neonates to treat apnea of prematurity (AOP) in neonates of gestational age ≥ 35-40 weeks. A longer duration of therapy has a higher risk of medication non-adherence due to higher costs and inappropriate dosage forms. Pharmaceutically compounded oral caffeine (PCC) could be an appropriate alternate dosage form. The researchers aimed to determine the impact of PCC on medication-related factors influencing medication adherence (MA) and the frequency of hospital readmission with apnea (HRA) in preterm neonates.
Methods: We conducted a single-center quasi-experimental study for this quality …

Introduction: In settings where the private sector constitutes a larger part of the health system, profit-gathering can take primacy over patients' well-being. In their interactions with pharmaceutical companies, private general practitioners (GPs) can experience the conflict of interest (COI), a situation whereby the impartiality of GPs' professional decision making may be influenced by secondary interests such as financial gains from prescribing specific pharmaceutical brands.
Methods and analysis: This study is a randomised controlled trial to assess the impact of a multifaceted intervention on GPs' medical practice. The study sample consists of 419 registered GPs who own/work in private clinics and …

Cardiovascular Adverse Events In Oncology Trials: Understanding And Appreciating The Differences Between Clinical Trial Data And Real-World Reports, Michael S Ewer, Jay Herson
Duncan NRI Faculty and Staff Publications
Reports of cardiac adverse events from oncology clinical trials often are at variance with reports derived from clinical observations or data-base reviews. These differences may lead to confusion, as different levels of risks abound in the literature, and the true cardiac risk of using some agents is uncertain. Additionally, such discrepancies may lead to the creation of over-cautious surveillance algorithms. Reasons for these reported differences are complex and often reflect subtleties in the criteria for individual patient evaluation. Both clinical trial data and real-world data have potential flaws that make reconciliation problematic. Importantly, however, both provide crucial information regarding the …

Implementation Of Pharmacy Access To Hormonal Contraception, Lindsay E. Dale
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Women report significant barriers to obtaining hormonal contraception prescriptions, including difficulty scheduling clinician appointments, inconvenient clinic hours and desire to avoid pelvic examinations. To increase contraceptive access, states throughout the United States have and continue to pass legislation authorizing pharmacists to prescribe hormonal contraception, allowing women to initiate contraception directly at the pharmacy without involvement of a physician. Despite patient and pharmacist interest in direct pharmacy access to contraception, many pharmacists report challenges to prescribing contraception. Few studies have assessed the uptake of pharmacy-prescribed contraception in states with expanded pharmacist prescriptive authority, but no prior studies have evaluated the implementation …

Abuse Of Benzodiazepines Among The Elderly Population, Sofia A. Padilla
College of Pharmacy Student Research
Throughout the years, benzodiazepines are safe drugs to treat several conditions among the elderly population, including anxiety, mixed anxiety-depression, and insomnia. However, inappropriate use of this drug, together with known risks such as cognitive impairment, delirium, and falls, is on the rise in these recent years, making the elderly population more inclined to suffer adverse effects when using them. The literature review paper will examine the use of benzodiazepines among the elderly population and their abuse through various published articles that addressed these concerns. The paper will also examine some potential solutions that will reduce the inappropriate use of benzodiazepine …

Interrogating Race And Place-Based Inequities In Hiv And Covid-19, Rohan Khazanchi
Interrogating Race And Place-Based Inequities In Hiv And Covid-19, Rohan Khazanchi
MD Honors Theses
Over the last four years, I have developed a research focus examining the intersections of race, place, and health. My M.D. Honors Thesis reflects a snapshot of these efforts. In this collection of brief research reports, I leverage area-based measures to investigate structural inequities in three contexts: the HIV epidemic in our hyperlocal community, the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, and clinical trials for novel COVID-19 therapeutics. I apply novel social epidemiologic tools to measure and explore disparate outcomes. And, in reflecting upon my findings, I discuss concrete implications for clinicians, researchers, and policymakers alike.

Sources Of Patient Information For Type 2 Diabetes Self-Care In Northern Mississippi, Minh-Sang La
Honors Theses
Given the prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in the United States and the continuous rise of cases, especially within Mississippi, there is an increasing need to identify if, and how, patients with Type 2 Diabetes receive information about self-care. While there is data available on the topic of where patients receive their information and the influence it has on their health in other countries of the world, the research on the source of Type 2 Diabetes education in the United States is scarce. Therefore, this study aims to bridge the gap of understanding where patients with Type 2 Diabetes …
Firsthand Experience In A Community Pharmacy Through The Lens Of A Pharmacy Technician, Khamariah Patrice Yelder-Anderson
Firsthand Experience In A Community Pharmacy Through The Lens Of A Pharmacy Technician, Khamariah Patrice Yelder-Anderson
Honors Theses
In the first chapter, I discussed three of the major issues in a community pharmacy which are rude customers, phones, and shorter hours. Technicians have to deal with very opinionated customers who can come off as insolent. The phones are a popular mode of communication for both the patients and physicians but that doesn’t account for the added demands it places on pharmacy workers. Lastly, the pharmacy has experienced later openings with earlier closings that have left filled queues and unhappy customers. The next chapter, interpersonal dynamic, takes a deeper look into how various roles of the pharmacy engage with …

College of Pharmacy Faculty Papers
Background: Deep South states, particularly Alabama, experience disproportionately higher opioid prescribing rates versus national rates. Considering limited opioid use disorder (OUD) providers in this region, collaborative efforts between non-healthcare professionals is critical in mitigating overdose mortality. The Alabama Opioid Training Institute (OTI) was created in 2019 to empower community members to take action in combatting OUD in local regions. The OTI included: 1) eight full-day in-person conferences; and 2) an interactive mobile-enabled website ( https://alabamaoti.org ). This study assessed the impact of the OTI on influential community members' knowledge, abilities, concerns, readiness, and intended actions regarding OUD and opioid overdose …

The Credible Empa-Reg Clinical Trials: Impacts Of Empagliflozin On Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus And At Risk Of Adverse Cardiovascular Events, Janai D. Minga
Honor’s College Freeman Research Journal
Background and Literature Review: There still exists limited evidence regarding the potential of effects of an inhibitor of sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 known as empagliflozin when it is added as part of the standard care when treating type 2 diabetes patients with a high risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. A significant number of studies have investigated the potential impacts of empagliflozin in lowering the risk of death from heart failure related problems. Available literature reviews and meta-analysis are in consensus that the empagliflozin has positive effects when used to lower the glucose level in the blood of patients with …
Multimodal Approach To Chronic Pain Management And Prevention Of Opioid Use Disorder, Hannah Elston
Multimodal Approach To Chronic Pain Management And Prevention Of Opioid Use Disorder, Hannah Elston
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
Background. Chronic pain (CP) is a major public health problem that affects one-third of the population and can interfere with the activities of daily life and cause decreased quality of life. Patients with CP have been increasingly prescribed opioids, contributing to the rise in the opioid epidemic. Due to the long-term nature of CP, the use of opioids as the sole treatment for CP can cause tolerance and increased dosages overtime which can lead to addiction and potentially overdose. Therefore, CP treatment should include multimodal approaches to treatment to prevent opioid misuse, opioid use disorder (OUD), and overdose. Multimodal treatments …
