Does Federal Preemption Inoculate Us Against The Alarming Prospect Of State Vaccine Bans?, Lars Noah
Does Federal Preemption Inoculate Us Against The Alarming Prospect Of State Vaccine Bans?, Lars Noah
UF Law Faculty Publications
With growing resistance to vaccinations-premised, for instance, on misplaced fears of side effects or religious objections-it takes little effort to imagine that a state might act to prohibit some or all uses of a particular vaccine licensed by the federal government. Indeed, one year ago, legislators in a couple of states toyed with the idea of banning the primary vaccines against Covid-19, and, twenty years ago, half a dozen states effectively barred certain uses of one flu vaccine formulation. Although federal law should preempt at least some of these types of state restrictions, the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution …

Evidence Synthesis Methodology: Promoting Reproducible Methodology Through Modified Assignments, Laura Lipke, Neyda Gilman
Library Created Resources
Initially, systematic reviews in healthcare served to synthesize findings from clinical studies, aiding comprehensive access to the most effective treatments within evidence-based practice. Over time, their scope has broadened beyond treatment effectiveness, leading to a surge in publication. Consequently, many health science faculty now assign systematic reviews in classrooms without a full grasp of the standardized process, leaving students ill-equipped due to insufficient guidance and resources.
While mastering systematic review techniques is crucial for evidence-based practice, faculty can opt for modified assignments to foster a deeper understanding of the review process. These modified tasks, can be completed within a semester, …

Enhancing Safety Surveillance During Clinical Trials: The Development Of A Safety Data Review Handbook To Support Pharmacovigilance Clinicians, Lauren Wilson
DNP Scholarly Projects
Abstract
BACKGROUND: Pharmacovigilance (PV) Sciences include activities related to safety surveillance of pharmaceutical products, and is critical for developing safe and effective medications, vaccines and medical devices. Safety monitoring starts with preclinical research and continues through clinical trial and post marketing phases. PV scientists ensure patient safety during clinical trials through regular review and analysis of safety data. Regulations have become increasingly complex, leading to inadequately defined methods for reviewing large clinical trial safety datasets. Inconsistent safety data review (SDR) practices can result in delayed detection of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) or safety signals.
METHODS: This quality improvement project used …

Azathioprine is a pro-drug and is metabolized by the TPMT enzyme in the body. In South Asians, Azathioprine is known to cause alopecia and bone marrow suppression in patients with TPMT enzyme deficiency. In India, the prevalence of TPMT mutation varies from 1.2- 10%. A new mutation was detected in 2014, NUDT15 whose incidence varies from 8.5-16%. Patients with mutation in both TPMT and NUDT15 develop myelosuppression faster. In our case, alopecia manifested as the first clinical feature of Azathioprine myelosuppression. Physicians need to recognize early clinical clues (alopecia) to avoid the impending development of myelosuppression and to look for …

Upon their discovery, antibiotics were known as “wonder drugs” due to their ability to cure serious bacterial infections. While antibiotics are still revolutionary in healthcare today, the emergence of antibiotic resistance is a growing threat to public health. Antibiotic resistance is simply a normal adaptive response where bacteria evolve over time. However, overuse of antibiotics, sub-optimal treatment regimens, and environmental exposures create optimal conditions for antibiotic resistance to develop and spread. Common ways antibiotics enter the environment are via wastewater and agricultural use. Even with properly functioning wastewater treatment systems, full removal of resistant bacteria may not be possible as …

The gut microbiome is the wide array of good and bad bacteria found in the digestive tract of all humans. Although the composition of gut microbiota is developed before someone is even born, there are nutritional decisions made in adulthood that can impact the health of the gut. Certain nutritional foods can increase the diversity of the gut and create a beneficial environment. On the other hand, many foods found in the common American diet can negatively impact the microbiome. The gut can suffer from a poor diet when the permeability of the intestinal barrier and the diversity richness is …
