Applications Of Machine Learning Methods In Health Outcomes Research: Heart Failure In Women, Khalid Abdullah Alhussain
Applications Of Machine Learning Methods In Health Outcomes Research: Heart Failure In Women, Khalid Abdullah Alhussain
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
There is robust evidence that heart failure (HF) is associated with substantial mortality, morbidity, poor health-related quality of life, healthcare utilization, and economic burden. Previous research has revealed that there are sex differences in the epidemiology, etiology, and disease burden of HF. However, research on HF among women, especially postmenopausal women, is limited. To fill the knowledge gap, the three related aims of this dissertation were to: (1) identify knowledge gaps in HF research among women, especially postmenopausal women, using unsupervised machine learning methods and big data (i.e., articles published in PubMed); (2) identify emerging predictors (i.e., polypharmacy and some …

An Exploration Of Pharmacy Education Researchers' Perceptions And Experiences Conducting Qualitative Research, Antonio A. Bush, Mauriell Amechi, Adam Persky
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications
Objective. To investigate pharmacy education researchers' experiences in conducting qualitative research and their perceptions of qualitative research in pharmacy education
Methods. A phenomenological approach was used to conduct one-time, in-depth interviews with 19 participants from 12 schools and colleges of pharmacy. Interview transcripts were coded and themes were identified using a modified form of the Sort and Sift, Think and Shift method of data analysis.
Results. Faculty members were the largest subgroup in the sample, followed by graduate students, postdoctoral fellows/scholars, and residents. Pharmacy education researchers had varying levels of training in conducting qualitative research and some had none at …

A Simple And Flexible Model To Calculate Annual Merit Raises For Health Sciences Faculty, Reza Mehvar
A Simple And Flexible Model To Calculate Annual Merit Raises For Health Sciences Faculty, Reza Mehvar
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Purpose
The objective of this study was to develop and implement a simple and flexible mathematical model to generate merit-based salary increases as a percentage of the faculty base salaries, with the flexibility to choose the range of merit raises.
Methods
Annual faculty performance scores, faculty base salaries, and available salary increase pool were used in a relatively simple linear model to determine the individual faculty merit raises as a percentage of their base salary. The core model allows the selection of a slope value that determines how steeply the merit raise changes with a change in the performance score. …

Pharmacy and Wellness Review
Introductory pharmacy practice experience (IPPE) hours are a means of integrating experiential education as a key role early on in pharmacy education. The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) has offered little guidance on mandatory and specific objectives to accomplish during IPPE hours, thus it is possible that preceptors do not feel adequately prepared, nor do they have a full understanding of what is required of them when they agree to precept an IPPE student. Given the lack of previous research conducted, the objective of this study was to obtain an understanding of the general attitude that preceptors have toward …

Getting Started As A New Preceptor, Neeloufar Fakourfar, Emmanuelle Schwartzmann
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Clinical experience in the healthcare field plays a crucial role in shaping future professionals into competent and well-rounded providers. Equally important is the ability to facilitate the learning process of learners to promote self-directed, lifelong learning and critical thinking.1-3 Preceptorship can vary in approach depending on the design of the learning experience: direct instruction, modeling, coaching, mentoring, and facilitiation.4-6 In addition, there are many teaching tools available such as One-Minute Preceptor, layered teaching, providing reflections, and thinking out loud.7-9 To be an effective preceptor, developing skills through self-reflection and seeking out professional development to strengthen areas of weakness are important. …

Implementation Of Trauma Service Guideline For The Use Of Phenobarbital In The Management Of The Non-Icu Trauma Patient At Risk Or Experiencing Severe Alcohol Withdrawal, Joseph Rappold, Julianne Ontengco, Stephen Tyzik, Suneela Nayak, Ruth Hanselman, Amy Sparks
Operations Transformation
The trauma service in a large academic tertiary medical center admits a large proportion of patients with the secondary diagnosis of alcohol use disorder. Given the successful use of phenobarbital in the critical care unit for withdrawal prophylaxis and treatment of acute withdrawal, a quality improvement project was established to create and implement guidelines for the non ICU patient.
A root cause analysis demonstrated several issues to include inconsistent clinical decision documentation. As a result, several countermeasures were initiated to address the various issues.
Post implementation of countermeasures, a decrease in the amount of severe alcohol withdrawal as well as …

The Role Of Using Formative Assessments In Problem-Based Learning: A Health Sciences Education Perspective, Kristi W. Kelley, Julaine M. Fowlin, Andrew A. Tawfik, Max C. Anderson
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
Practitioners in the field of pharmacy are often confronted with ill-structured problems. Specifically, pharmacists are tasked with making patient-specific recommendations that are both safe and effective, which requires combining knowledge from the biomedical, behavioral, and pharmaceutical sciences. Given the dynamic nature of pharmacy as a profession, the field has begun to explore learning strategies that go beyond mere content coverage to strategies that better support higher-order learning outcomes. One of these approaches is problem-based learning (PBL). While studies have focused on how to support PBL to improve learning outcomes, the role of assessment is often overlooked. Further exploration is thus …

The purpose of the Student Hotspotting initiative is to identify these individuals, understand their barriers and intervene by:
- Connecting them with community resources
- Improving coordination and communication between both providers and the patient
- Empowering these individuals to better manage their health
Our patient (DW) lives in a close-knit, 4-generation household that just welcomed their newest member: a black-and-white kitten
DW is a 61 year-old female who recently received orthotopic heart transplant. Her comorbidities include sleep apnea, GERD, OA, chronic pain syndrome, COPD and a history of a CVA
We identified 3 main barriers to address with DW
- Transportation difficulties
