Background: Humanitarian missions serve populations needing care and usually provide short term interventions. Traditionally, care provided through humanitarian agencies like VOSH International has been episodic, consisting of a short-term mission placing a team in country for several days. There have been discussions that episodic care is a short term measure which impedes the systematic development of a long term solution to providing the necessary health care. The move toward sustained care is a step in the direction of improving the public health in developing countries.

Background: Peripheral ulcerative keratitis (PUK) is a rare but severe ocular manifestation most commonly associated with rheumatoid arthritis amongst other autoimmune diseases. Quick diagnosis and co-management with corneal specialist and rheumatologist are crucial to preserve vision and life. Background: Silent sinus syndrome is a rare condition with multiple ophthalmic findings of significance. Chronic, subclinical maxillary sinus inflammation alters the pressure gradient, leading to eventual maxillary sinus collapse, orbital floor depression, enophthalmos, and diplopia.

Case Report: Functional endoscopic sinus surgery may be indicated to correct diplopia and/or cosmesis.

Conclusion: Patients unbothered by facial asymmetry may be managed with prism in eyeglasses.

Background: Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) has become a common modality in glaucoma diagnosis. Ease of use, comfort, and a comparative normative database makes this technology very popular with patients and practitioners. However, despite the sophistication of this technology, it may miss pathologic abnormalities of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) or be misinterpreted by practitioners based upon comparisons to a normative database.

Diabetic retinopathy is the most common microvascular complication associated with poorly controlled diabetes. Yet, only 60% of the diabetic population receives an annual eye examination by an eye specialist. Retinal imaging increases surveillance of retinopathy, however, it does not take the place of a comprehensive eye examination by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. The aim of this quality improvement project was to increase comprehensive eye examinations in patients with diabetes aged 18 to 75 years in a family practice that recently purchased a retinal imager. Background: Outer retinal damage can occur when excessive ultraviolet (UV) radiation reaches the retina. The most common etiology is from the sun, known as solar retinopathy, especially when individuals observe solar eclipses without appropriate eye protection. Another cause of UV retinopathy that is not frequently encountered in practice is arc welding, causing Welder’s Maculopathy. Fortunately, the prognosis of the UV retinopathies is quite favourable, as many fully recover after the initial insult to the retina. This retrospective case review aims to outline the clinical manifestation of this maculopathy and current opinions on its etiology and diagnosis.

Diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis (DUSN) is a rare, sight-threatening inflammatory condition caused by a nematode. It typically affects healthy children and young adults. Various nematodes have been implicated, including those that originate from dogs and raccoons. Late stage findings include optic nerve atrophy, retinal arterial attenuation, “retinitis pigmentosa-like” retinal pigmentary changes, and central and peripheral vision loss. We present a case study of long-standing DUSN. The combination of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and visual electrophysiology testing proved invaluable in establishing a presumptive diagnosis of this rare condition.

A case report of a 31-year-old woman who developed anterior subacapsular cataracts, and associated dermatological signs, after exposure to black mold. While atopic illness is commonly seen in childhood, a growing body of literature supports adult onset atopic dermatitis. Anterior subcapsular cataracts are pathognomonic for atopic illness, and can support a definitive and expedited dermatologic diagnosis of adult onset disease.

Research Focus. Millions of people who suffer from retinal disease live in air-polluted environments. The impact of the gaseous air pollutant ozone (O₃), a strong oxidant, on the retina is unknown. The aim of the present study is to compare the electroretinographic responses between control (no O₃ exposure) and O₃ -exposed rats and to better understand the effects of O₃ on retinal function.
