Elevated Bmi And The Effect On Breastfeeding Duration In Postpartum Individuals: An Integrative Review, Abigail E. Mobilia, Kirstin A. Wyly Jan 2026

Elevated Bmi And The Effect On Breastfeeding Duration In Postpartum Individuals: An Integrative Review, Abigail E. Mobilia, Kirstin A. Wyly

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: It has been well documented that exclusive breastfeeding provides benefits for infants and postpartum individuals, yet rates remain suboptimal in the United States, particularly among those with elevated pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI). Evidence suggests that elevated BMI is associated with shorter breastfeeding duration and may be influenced by physiologic, social, and structural factors. This integrative review synthesizes existing literature to clarify the relationship between elevated BMI and exclusive breastfeeding duration among postpartum individuals.
Methods: An integrative review was conducted following Whittemore and Knafl’s (2005) framework and PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A systematic search of PubMed, CINAHL, and Nursing & …

Implementation Of The Modified Early Obstetric Warning System (Meows) In Obstetric Patients Within A Level Iv Maternal Care Facility, Mei M. Stalder

Student Scholarly Projects

Practice Problem: Incidences of increasing maternal morbidity and mortality are often preceded by a period of unrecognized deterioration. The lack of an obstetric early warning system in a high-risk Level IV Maternal Care Facility further contributed to delayed identification and intervention of deteriorating mothers.

PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this DNP project was, in obstetric patients, 18-years or older (P), does the Modified Early Obstetric Warning System (MEOWS) (I), compared to current standard practice (C), affect the number of patients transferred to the ICU (O) within a six-week time frame (T)?

Evidence: Nine evidence-based articles were included in this …

To Be Soft Again: A Phenomenological Study Of Uncertainty And Resilience In Childbearing During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Marcianna Nosek Jan 2025

To Be Soft Again: A Phenomenological Study Of Uncertainty And Resilience In Childbearing During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Marcianna Nosek

Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications

Background:

During the COVID-19 pandemic, uncertainty was exacerbated in experiences of pregnancy and childbirth as people navigated through uncharted territory. Building resilience may be one effective way to cope. However, for those who carry a heavier burden in upholding others, a societal expectation of “toughness” and the ability to endure may lead to an appearance of resilience, while on the inside, well-being may be compromised.

Objectives:

This study is part of a larger phenomenological study that explored the broad research question: What is the lived experience of childbearing during the COVID-19 pandemic? Specific themes of uncertainty and resilience are reported …

Implementation Of Skin-To-Skin Contact Immediately Post Cesarean Birth: A Quality Improvement Project, Sophia Cooke Jul 2024

Implementation Of Skin-To-Skin Contact Immediately Post Cesarean Birth: A Quality Improvement Project, Sophia Cooke

Dissertations

Problem: Skin-to-skin contact implemented within the first hour of a newborn’s life improves health outcomes for both mother and infant. One of these health outcomes includes exclusive breastfeeding. The purpose of this quality improve project was to implement an infant securement device within the operating room after cesarean section births to decrease the time to initiate skin-to-skin contact and increase exclusive breastmilk feeding rates at discharge.

Methods: This study utilized a descriptive, observational design and was guided by the Plan-Do-Study-Act framework. A pre-test, post-test design was utilized to compared retrospective and prospective data. The retrospective data was collected to assess …

Implementation Of A Postpartum Depression Screening Protocol, Samantha Abercrombie Jul 2023

Implementation Of A Postpartum Depression Screening Protocol, Samantha Abercrombie

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a major depressive disorder that can occur after having a baby and anytime during the first year postpartum (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2021). Symptoms of PPD may include anger, crying more than usual, withdrawing from family, inability to bond with the baby, feelings of anxiousness, or thoughts of the mother harming herself or the baby. PPD can yield many challenges and hinder daily living activities. Recent research by the CDC (2021) estimates that 1 in 8 women experience manifestations of PPD. Findings also suggest that 1 in 5 women were not …

No One Should Have To Give Birth Alone: An Analysis Of The Efficacy Of Community-Based Doula Programs Serving Ethnic Minorities In San Francisco, Maria Margaret Nelson Aug 2022

No One Should Have To Give Birth Alone: An Analysis Of The Efficacy Of Community-Based Doula Programs Serving Ethnic Minorities In San Francisco, Maria Margaret Nelson

Master's Projects and Capstones

Adverse birth outcomes for both the parent and the child disproportionately affect people of color. Evidence demonstrates that one of the ways to mitigate these negative consequences is through the utilization of a doula, a trained birth companion that is not a medical provider but whose role it is to physically and emotionally support the patient through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Community-based doula programs, where the doula is of the same cultural background as the client, are particularly effective in improving birth outcomes in communities of color by providing culturally competent care and helping to navigate a healthcare system that …

Quantification Of Obstetric Hemorrhage, Alma Garcia Aug 2022

Quantification Of Obstetric Hemorrhage, Alma Garcia

Student Scholarly Projects

Practice Problem: The practice problem identified involved the inconsistent measurement of blood loss during the postpartum period due to the standard practice of estimating blood loss. Estimates are subjective measures that can have variable results based on interpretation and thus provide minimal meaningful data.

PICOT: The question that guided this project was structured in the following PICOT format. In postpartum women (P), how does the implementation of quantitative blood loss measurements (I), compared to estimated blood loss measurement (C), affect the early identification of severe hemorrhage (O), during the recovery period (T)?

Evidence: Obstetric hemorrhage is a preventable event that …

Prenatal Education For Black Mothers And Their Support Persons As An Intervention For Improving Initiation Of Breastfeeding, Sandra King Jul 2022

Prenatal Education For Black Mothers And Their Support Persons As An Intervention For Improving Initiation Of Breastfeeding, Sandra King

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: The benefits of breastfeeding are commonly known; however, the rates of exclusive breastfeeding among the Black community are less than those of other ethnic groups. Providing breastmilk or formula to an infant is an individual decision. Influential factors such as cultural background, employment status, socioeconomic status, level of education, and availability of support from family members and health care providers correlate with the method a mother chooses to feed her infant. Increasing breastfeeding initiation immediately after birth is a necessary precedent for uptake in the exclusivity of breastfeeding.

Purpose: This Doctor of Nursing Practice project aims to improve prenatal …

Every Milliliter Matters: Quantitative Blood Loss In Postpartum, Iana Vatsenko May 2022

Every Milliliter Matters: Quantitative Blood Loss In Postpartum, Iana Vatsenko

Master's Projects and Capstones

Postpartum hemorrhage remains a leading cause of maternal mortality in the United States. Postpartum hemorrhage occurs when mothers are bleeding excessively, have uterine atony, or the placenta has failed to come out completely. Research has shown that quantitative methods of blood loss estimation revealed a higher incidence of PPH than visual estimation. That is why using quantitative methods on time is essential for diagnosing PPH. Quantification of blood loss should be replaced by estimated blood loss since it is more accurate. The project's main focus was implementing quantification of blood loss and using the Triton Scale, a smart system to …

Counting Every Drop: Preventing Maternal Mortality With Quantifying Blood Loss Through Triton Scale, Summer Le May 2022

Counting Every Drop: Preventing Maternal Mortality With Quantifying Blood Loss Through Triton Scale, Summer Le

Master's Projects and Capstones

Postpartum (PP) hemorrhage is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality (AWHONN, 2021). In each of the past three years, the percentage of PP hemorrhage has increased at Hospital X. The PP unit at Hospital X performs around 4,500 total deliveries each year. While the standard of care for PP blood loss is to specifically measure blood in milliliters as Quantifying Blood Loss (QBL) for Labor and Delivery (L&D), it is not yet the standard of care in the 24 hours postpartum after delivery (ACOG, 2019). This quality improvement project involved educating nurses about measuring blood loss – specifically …

Improving Postpartum Hypertension Discharge Education: A Pilot Project, Kathryn Barth Apr 2022

Improving Postpartum Hypertension Discharge Education: A Pilot Project, Kathryn Barth

Dissertations

Problem: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are a leading cause of maternal morbidity, mortality, and postpartum readmission. Several evidence-based algorithms and protocols have been implemented in the inpatient setting to treat severe blood pressure and prevent complications. However, there remains an opportunity to improve the postpartum care transition and discharge education for patients with these conditions in an attempt to decrease 30-day postpartum hypertension readmissions.

Methods: This pilot project utilized a descriptive design and took place on a postpartum unit at a Midwest metropolitan high-risk obstetrical teaching hospital. Interventions included patient-specific discharge education, distribution of a home blood pressure …

Assessment Of Postpartum Nurses' Knowledge And Teaching Habits Of Maternal Morbidity And Mortality, Mikayla Dodson Apr 2021

Assessment Of Postpartum Nurses' Knowledge And Teaching Habits Of Maternal Morbidity And Mortality, Mikayla Dodson

DNP Projects

The postpartum period is a joyous time of mother-infant bonding, but it can also be a risky time for women. Despite the education that is provided to postpartum women after birth, many women are still questioning whether or not the signs and symptoms they are experiencing are sufficiently alarming to alert a health care provider. Any delay in seeking care can contribute to poor health outcomes and even maternal mortality. Registered nurses oftentimes provide the bulk of discharge education to postpartum patients. When their knowledge or confidence levels regarding specific topics are low, this can negatively impact the education they …

Pelvic Floor Muscle Training In Management Of Postpartum Pelvic Floor Dysfunctions: A Literature Review, Rebecca S. Tanner Jan 2016

Pelvic Floor Muscle Training In Management Of Postpartum Pelvic Floor Dysfunctions: A Literature Review, Rebecca S. Tanner

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Women can face a wide range of pelvic floor dysfunctions following pregnancy, ranging from urinary incontinence to pelvic pain. Unfortunately, these problems are not routinely checked for in postpartum check-ups and women do not always bring it to the physician’s attention. Strengthening of the pelvic floor muscles may be able to help women prevent these disorders and improve these women’s lifestyles.

The purpose of this thesis was to review and analyze different trials to determine if different pelvic floor dysfunctions (urinary incontinence, sexual dysfunction, and pelvic girdle pain) can be treated using pelvic floor muscle training in the postpartum. After …
