Background/Purpose: The purpose of this literature analysis was to identify the effects of hydrotherapy use in the first stage of labor. Although hydrotherapy has been well-studied and its benefits well documented, it is use in labor still remains under-utilized in the United States. There has been a recent rise in medical intervention in labor and a coinciding rising cesarean section rate. The purpose of this paper is to critically examine the literature and evidence that is available surrounding pre-pregnancy and prenatal use of marijuana and the effects it has on the developing fetus/infant. It was found that across most findings that further research needs to be done on the use of marijuana prior to pregnancy, during pregnancy, and postpartum. Epidural analgesia has an impact on duration of labor, type of delivery and the neonate. Good research data supports epidural analgesia shorts first stage of labor, lengthens second stage, increases instrumental delivery but no increased risk for cesarean delivery. Epidural analgesia has no effect on neonatal Apgar scores but decreases initiating and duration of breastfeeding.

Background/Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to critically review current literature regarding current methods for labor induction and their impact on the duration of labor and rate of cesarean section. Theoretical Framework: Imogene King’s Theory of Goal Attainment is the framework used for this literature appraisal. King’s theory focuses on the dynamic interacting systems for goal attainment (Gonzalo, 2011). Methods: Twenty-one original research articles involving labor induction methods were critically reviewed. Additionally, six systematic reviews involving labor induction methods were also included. Results: Whether the woman has regular or irregular cycles is a major determinant of what method can be successfully utilized. Background/Purpose: Trial of Labor After Cesarean (TOLAC) is a safe delivery option formany women. Due to demographics, availability in rural communities, and lack of education and opportunity, many women are not attempting them. Women should have access to TOLAC regardless of their geographic location, socio-economic status, or insurance. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) practice bulletin urges that facilities have an emergency plan in place if an emergent cesarean is required. Although LARC methods including IUDs and implants are highly effective in preventing pregnancies and both the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommend it for adolescents as a first-line choice given their efficacy, safety, and ease of use, its utilization by sexually active adolescents remains low. Background: There are currently no guidelines for screening for thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) during pregnancy. Currently, there is some debate as to whether pregnant women should be screened for TPOAb, universally, or using a risk-based approach. In addition, there is conflicting evidence suggesting the implications of positive TPOAb testing during pregnancy and their effect on not only the pregnancy, but also the postpartum period and the fetus. Background: Neonatal outcomes have not improved over the past 30 years in spite of increases in funding and utilization. New models of prenatal care, such as Centering Pregnancy, need to be evaluated for effectiveness. This critical review of the literature focuses on comparing birth outcomes, maternal weight gain, and adequacy of prenatal care between group and traditional care models. Results: Newborns with mothers in group care were more likely to be born at later gestational ages and with higher birth weights. Background: Perineal trauma and injury is extremely common during vaginal birth. Nurse-midwives and other obstetric providers should explore the most current literature for possible ways that perineal trauma and injury during vaginal birth can be avoided in patients. Purpose: To determine if hands-on perineum care, given by healthcare providers during labor and delivery, decreases perineal trauma and injury in women giving birth vaginally, compared with as opposed to women delivering vaginally who do not receive any hands-on perineum care. Purpose: The purpose of the critical review of literature was to identify and analyze benefits of delayed umbilical cord clamping in full term and preterm infants with a focus on iron stores, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and hyperbilirubinemia. Methods: Twenty-two articles were included in the critical literature review with the purpose of determining whether delayed umbilical cord clamping caused increases in iron stores, hemoglobin and hematocrit, or had no clinical significant increases in hyperbilirubinemia causing neonatal jaundice and the need for phototherapy treatment.
