Miscommunication between patients and healthcare professionals is common in U.S. hospitals and is considered one of the chief factors in reduced patient satisfaction with care. Collaboration with the nurse researcher who reviewed the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Survey (HCAHPS) data for a local hospital noted that negative ratings were directly related to the miscommunication between the patient and care providers. AbstractUrinary tract infections (UTIs) have been identified as the most common reason for hospital visits among adults. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that the prevalence of UTIs in long-term care facilities ranges from 20%-50%. The purpose of this staff education project was to implement an educational program to increase staff knowledge of proactive management of urinary tract health with the ultimate goal of reducing acute illnesses at the skilled nursing facility (SNF). Nursing peer review is a professional practice in which nurses offer constructive, non-personal, practice-related feedback to fellow nurses. The use of nursing peer review has been recommended by the American Nurses Association (ANA 1988, 2014) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC 2008). Despite being recommended by professional organizations, the use of peer review in nursing has not been widely implemented. Evaluation of nursing colleagues has the potential to enhance professional nursing, both in practice and in nursing education.

Background and Review of Literature: Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) is an effective form of contraception that has been shown to have high rates of satisfaction and few contraindications for patients. However, patients with Medicaid coverage may face barriers and challenges in obtaining LARC. Often, providers in small obstetrics and gynecology (OBGYN) private practices are unable or unwilling to provide LARC placement due to financial burdens as a result of limited Medicaid reimbursement. Purpose

To improve outcomes for PICU patients with central lines by reducing central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) and meeting a 2021 goal rate of < 1.3 infections per 1000 central line days.

Background

PICU CLABSI rates increased from 2.2 in 2019 to 2.6 in 2020. Despite this increase, Quality and Safety data showed high compliance to CLABSI prevention bundles and no evident trends to inform improvement efforts.

Methodology

PICU leadership and CNS met to discuss quality improvement solutions to supplement routine safety cards and decrease CLABSI rates. This team developed a plan for a group composed of designated bedside staff and unit leaders who would focus on reducing …

Infection triggers an inflammatory response; if untreated or mistreated, this microbe invasion can lead to sepsis. The purpose of this submission is to address the promising use of procalcitonin levels (PCT) as a superior marker in the early detection of bacterial infection via a scholarly literature review.

PICU staff frequently verbalize feelings of moral distress, anxiety, and exhaustion related to repeated exposure to complicated, ethically challenging situations and the intense nature of work in the PICU. Stressors associated with complex long term patient cases, deaths, medical errors, and adverse events are compounded by factors like the pandemic, high patient acuity, and instability of staffing. Collectively, these situations increase the risk of burnout and decreased job satisfaction.

Pediatric and neonatal patients are especially vulnerable to suffering from distress. This literature review identifies research which applies passive music listening to distressed neonatal and pediatric acute care patients. Databases searched to find relevant studies include CINAHL plus with full text, MEDLINE, Alt HealthWatch, APA PsycArticles, and APA PsycInfo from EBSCOhost. Six studies were identified to meet search criteria. The studies that supported music listening with the neonatal and pediatric populations had a positive effect in reducing distress levels.
