Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

One challenge facing healthcare training programs is balancing the need to provide students with interprofessional education (IPE) and collaborative practice (CP) opportunities in the context of highly prescribed standards-driven curricula (e.g. nursing and speech-language pathology). An infusion-based approach is an option for institutions and standards-driven programs that do not have specific IPE/CP courses or open electives in their curriculum.

Literature reveals accurate medication reconciliation results in increased patient satisfaction, improved patient outcomes, higher patient safety, shorter length of stay, and cost-effectiveness. With every transition of care a patient experiences, their risk for medication discrepancies increases—the project aims to enhance the medication reconciliation process in one long-term acute care hospital in Arkansas. The project aims to evaluate the current process, educate staff, implement a medication reconciliation toolkit, and assess accuracy. Baseline information resulted from reviewing twenty medication reconciliations. Health care providers in Canada are expected to take care of people from a variety of cultural backgrounds, and it is difficult for health care providers to deeply understand the lived experiences of some individuals to provide them with culturally sensitive care. Syrian refugees comprise one such group of newcomers to Canada. This phenomenological study aimed to uncover the meaning of the lived experiences of Syrian refugees using Giorgi’s (2009) method. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) elevation is a primary risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular problems such as heart disease and stroke. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and stroke is the fifth leading. Earlier LDL reduction improves morbidity and mortality. Literature indicates fewer women start statin medications compared to men. Qualitative health research plays a central role in exploring individuals’ experiences and perceptions of wellness, illness, and healthcare services. Visual tools are increasingly used for data elicitation. An ecomap is a visual tool that applies ecosystems theory to human communities and relationships to provide an illustration of the quality of relationships. We describe the use of ecomaps in qualitative health research. Searches across eight databases identified 407 citations. We screened them in duplicate to identify 129 publications that underwent full text review and included 73 in the final synthesis. We classified and summarized data based on iterative comparisons across sources. …

The objectives were to describe rates of MMRd or MSI-H EC tumors, the prevalence of LS, the practice patterns of EC genetic evaluation and adherence to NCCN guidelines, and to identify disparities in the genetic evaluation of women with EC. A retrospective cohort study was performed on women with EC from 1/2013 to 12/2019, and information collected included demographics, personal and family history, EC diagnosis and treatment, and details of genetic evaluation. Practice Problem: Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSI) are a preventable hospital acquired infection which contributes to patient morbidity, mortality and rising healthcare costs.

PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was: In adult inpatients with central venous catheters, does the use of a two-person dressing change team, compared to a single person procedure, decrease the rate of central line associated bloodstream infections over the course of 8 weeks?

Evidence: The prevention of CLABSI is most effective when multifaceted line maintenance bundles are implemented and adherence to these bundles nears 100% (Schreiber et al. 2018).
