Negative stereotyping of men in nursing has been a chronic problem that has a direct effect on males and detracts from efforts to recruit and retain them. At this time in American history (2018), traditionally male-dominated professions are making significant progress toward the goal of a gender-balanced workplace. However, the opposite is not true. Traditionally female-dominated professions are not attracting or appealing to men. In the nursing profession, the number of male nurses is relatively small and has remained relatively fixed over time. Estimates vary between 6-15 percent, with the current average being approximately 11 percent (American Nurses Association, 2014). …

In this descriptive qualitative study, nurse and healthcare leaders' experiences, perceptions of care coordination and transition management (CCTM®), and insights as to how to foster adoption of the CCTM RN role in nursing education, practice across the continuum, and policy were explored. Twenty-five barriers to recognition and adoption of CCTM RN practice across the continuum were identified and categorized. Implications of these findings, recommendations for adoption of CCTM RN practice across the care continuum, and strategies for reimbursement policies are discussed.

This quality improvement project was created to help increase knowledge of the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) in the Emergency Department (ED), a form of triage used to categorize patients by their acuity. Proper ESI use shortens the length of stay times, door to provider times and reduces the number of patients that leave without being seen.

The goal of this project was to develop an online learning module that would increase the nurses’ knowledge of triage to enhance triage accuracy. Nineteen (19) emergency department nurses were given a pretest, an ESI educational presentation, and a follow-up post-test.

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a potentially fatal, inherited disorder of muscle hypermetabolism that occurs after a person is exposed to commonly used volatile anesthetic agents (sevoflurane, desflurane, isoflurane) and/or the depolarizing muscle relaxant, succinylcholine (Diu & Mancuso, 2012). A large Midwest multispecialty organization’s Follow My Healthpatient portal application (FMH app) is underutilized by patients and providers. This gap in practice supported the need to implement an evidence-based assessment protocol for early identification of palliative care needs in patients with Alzheimer’s disease residing in a long-term care facility. The protocol included using the patient’s Global Deterioration Scale (GDS) score to determine the patient’s palliative care needs according to the Dementia Progression Prioritization of Goals model. Inadequately treated surgical pain in children leads to risky complications, such as longer recovery times, infection, prolonged hospitalizations, readmissions, altered pain sensitivity, neurophysiological changes, and cognitive-behavioral abnormalities (Campbell, 2013; Ibrahim, Jones, Lai, & Tan, 2016). Review of the literature indicated intravenous dexmedetomidine, as an adjunct, may lead to improved outcomes and a reduction in postoperative pain in children undergoing surgical intervention. The purpose of this research study was to explore the lived experiences of African-American first-time mothers at a hospital following the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) guidelines to promote breastfeeding. Breastfeeding rates for African-American mothers are lower than other racial groups. BFHI institutions offer breastfeeding support through adaptation of a set of practices designed to promoted exclusive breastfeeding. The aim of this qualitative hermeneutic study is to gain understanding of the phenomenon of living as a dying child.
