Operating room (OR) turnover cleaning is an important part of perioperative workflow for surgical teams, particularly to prevent cross-contamination of infectious pathogens from the surgical environment to staff and patients. Incomplete OR turnover cleaning ultimately leaves vulnerable surgical patients at risk for surgical-site infections (SSIs) and other types of hospital acquired infections (HAIs), which leads to delays in overall operations of the OR. A microsystem assessment at a large metropolitan hospital revealed an issue with incomplete OR turnover cleaning evident by the presence of dirty canisters, filters, and unclean anesthesia machines/work-areas after sterile surgical supplies had already been opened in …

Caring for patients at end-of-life is a difficult patient assignment for a nurse. Possessing the knowledge, skills, and means to communicate with and advocate for patients is key to providing quality care. A concept analysis of death literacy identified one specific challenge for nurses, futile care. Futile care has been linked to increased patient suffering, increased health care costs, use of scarce resources, and moral distress. Futile care exists in the medical-surgical acute care setting, but the concept has not been explored within this population. The INPUT project is a model partnership that changed the way health care was offered to the underserved in rural Western North Carolina. Grant funding provided a full‐time Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) to a free clinic and created clinical placements for FNP students. Students had opportunities to learn about unique aspects of care for vulnerable, underserved populations to encourage them to consider working in rural communities. The clinic saw an increase in patient visits and offered more continuity in follow‐up care. This academic–practice partnership represents a successful example of how working together can benefit the collaborators and community.

Preoxygenation plays a vital role in ensuring patient safety for all patient populations, especially those considered clinically obese. The negative pathophysiological effects obesity has related to body habitus and respiratory mechanics increases the risk of unexpected adverse events. Obese patients encounter a 50% decrease in functional residual capacity (FRC) when undergoing general anesthesia. A clinical affiliate hospital in Mississippi lacked a best practice clinical policy regarding the most appropriate skin preparation solution to use prior to neuraxial anesthesia. The evidence showed that alcoholic chlorhexidine is the optimal solution due to advanced characteristics which help reduce infection. Reducing infections can potentially reduce further complications for the patient, hospitalization length, and cost. Also, chlorhexidine was found safe to use for neuraxial anesthesia if cross-contamination is avoided and adequate drying time is allowed. Lastly, alcoholic povidone-iodine is an appropriate alternate if 0.5% chlorhexidine is unavailable.

Grove, Burns, and Gray (2013) define the problem statement as an explicit identification of the research need. Literature search yields scarce ethnographic research on the nursing population as a culture-sharing group, and no qualitative research exists regarding medical-surgical nurses’ self-need prioritization. In 2015, nursing schools in the United States turned away 62,361 qualified applicants in the baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs (Fang, Li, Arietti, & Trautman, 2016). The number of funded, vacant nursing faculty positions increased from 6.9% in 2014 to 7.1% in 2015 (Fang et al., 2016).
