Background: Patients with heart failure (HF) can suffer from increased thirst intensity and distress. Trajectories of thirst intensity and distress from hospital to home are unclear. The aim of this study was to describe thirst intensity and distress trajectories in patients from the time of hospital admission to 4 weeks after discharge, and describe trajectories of thirst intensity and distress by patients’ characteristics (gender, age, body mass index [BMI], plasma urea, anxiety, and depression).

Day-to-day care of patients throughout the continuum of life puts medical surgical nurses at risk for burnout and secondary traumatic stress (STS). Due to the unpredictable nature of patient care, current burnout and STS interventions that take the nurse away from the bedside have high attrition rates. A feasibility pilot to test a mobile intervention left many questions unanswered regarding the medical surgical nursing population, burnout, and STS. Case studies are a valuable instructional tool frequently used in nursing to allow students to analyze clinical problems based on real-world scenarios. This study examines the use of the Realizeit adaptive platform to create case study scenarios for pathophysiology, a course required in the undergraduate nursing curriculum. The data gathered as students progressed through the adaptive content--time on task, number of times cases accessed, and scores on each case--provided valuable information on student behavior and engagement with the three case studies. BACKGROUND: Previous studies have identified genetic variants associated with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in extremely preterm infants. However, findings with genome-wide significance have been rare, and not replicated. We hypothesized that whole exome sequencing (WES) of premature subjects with extremely divergent phenotypic outcomes could facilitate the identification of genetic variants or gene networks contributing disease risk.

RESULTS: The Prematurity and Respiratory Outcomes Program (PROP) recruited a cohort of > 765 extremely preterm infants for the identification of markers of respiratory morbidity. We completed WES on 146 PROP subjects (85 affected, 61 unaffected) representing extreme phenotypes of early respiratory morbidity. We tested for …

There is controversy surrounding the entry-level degree to the profession of nursing. This study had the focus of showing the persistence of the associate degree nursing student as a way of giving evidence to maintaining this pathway as entry to nursing. Narrative inquiry was used to interview 10 students and 3 faculty on the persistence of the nursing student. Callista Roy's Coping Adaptation Processing Scale was taken by 51 students enrolled in the same nursing program. Problem/Impact Statement: MMC's 32-bed Mother Baby Unit is experiencing backed up flow due to high volume and patients not being discharged quickly enough. The current average discharge time on Mother Baby and the Newborn Nursery is 1:36pm. The Mother baby unit has 32 beds, is staffed by 8-9 nurses, and has average discharge of 91 patients a week.

Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative study was to highlight the lived experiences of Hispanic migrant workers seeking healthcare at a community care clinic in rural Appalachia with participation from student nurses learning about qualitative research methods.

Design/method: A phenomenological qualitative study was approved by the institutional IRB. Senior BSN nursing students, community care clinic staff and interpreters, and nurse educators participated in structured interviews during healthcare visits from Hispanic migrant workers at a local community care clinic in rural Appalachia. Nurses must learn essential skills based in transcultural nursing to address issues of equity and social justice. The development of a model for nursing practice for an urban nurse-led drop-in center for individuals experiencing marginalization provides an opportunity for student nurses to learn transcultural nursing skills that shifts care from acknowledging the need of others to accompanying others on their health journey. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), the Joint Commission (TJC), Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) have all highlighted readmissions as an issue in healthcare that needs to be addressed. Many of these organizations have piloted programs which aim to decrease readmissions.

The MAP (Medication Focus, Access Assistance, and Provider Collaboration) program seeks to decrease the readmission rate of high-risk patients. Language and the ability to communicate with the patient are foundational for effective anesthesia/patient relationships (Rosse, Bruijne, Suurmond, Essink-Bot, &Wagner, 2015). The burgeoning population of Vietnamese people in the United States demands implementation of procedures to ensure adequate communication and safe care. The present project sought to determine if the Wong-BakerVietnamese Pain Rating® Scale assisted Vietnamese patients with limited English proficiency to adequately report pain or discomfort relief during the post-operative period. Laryngeal Mask Airway: A Postoperative Sore Throat Clinical Practice Guideline, Logan Williams

One of the most common and preventable complications experienced by patients undergoing general anesthesia is a postoperative sore throat (POST). Up to 70% of patients who receive a laryngeal mask airway (LMA) during anesthesia suffer from POST. Despite its regular occurrence and designation as a minor complication, POST has proven to be a distressing complication for patients afflicted. Consequently, a perceived minor complication can, in fact, play a major role in a patient’s perception of their care, the skill of their anesthesia provider, and their overall satisfaction with their experience.
