Diabetic gastroparesis is one of several long-term complications of diabetes mellitus. It is characterized by delayed gastric emptying secondary to autonomic neuropathy. As the incidence of diabetes mellitus continues to rise, it becomes even more important for anesthetists to address the risk of aspiration posed by diabetic gastroparesis. Currently, aspiration of gastric contents accounts for nearly half of all major airway complications in the operating room, often due to incomplete assessment of risk factors. Lyme disease (LD) is a zoonotic infection transmitted by black-legged (deer) ticks. This disease is the most common vector-bourne illness in the United States (Maloney, 2016). The tick transmits Borrelia burgdorferi, which is the bacterial agent of LD. The Center of Disease Control (CDC) suspects the disease is highly underreported in the United States (Clayton, Dunn, Jones, Jones, & Schaffner, 2015). Even with the disease being underreported, LD is the fifth most commonly reported nationally notifiable disease (Delorey, et al., 2015). Those are that mechanically ventilated are also at risk for nosocomial infections that can negatively affect the patients health. Oral hygiene care, early mobilization, spontaneous breathing trials, and aspiration precautions are all interventions that many hospitals have incorporated into standard practice to prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). The importance of these interventions are discussed; along with the pathophysiology of VAP and how healthcare providers can positively impact the millions of patients every year that are affected by nosocomial infections.

Infantile Spams is an epilepsy syndrome that usually appears in children between the ages of four and eight months. The spasms generally occur upon waking or right after feeding, and can occur in clusters of a hundred or more at a time (Go et al., 2012). Children with infantile spasms present with a classic, abnormal electroencephalogram. The pattern that determines if it is indeed infantile spasms is called hypsarrythmia, which is a disorganized pattern (Iype et al., 2016). Attrition is a serious issue in the nursing industry. One factor influencing rates of attrition in nursing is aggression victimization at work (Estryn-Behar et al., 2010). However, there is little research in the aggression literature that examines how aggression from different sources affects attrition (both job and career turnover) differently. Purpose: To explore the experiences of older Filipino migrants adjusting to living perma- nently in New Zealand.

Method: The qualitative descriptive approach taken in this study involved 17 individual face- to-face interviews of older Filipino migrants in New Zealand.

Results: Three main themes emerged from the data. The first theme was “moving backwards and moving forward”, which described how these older Filipino migrants adjusted to chal- lenges they experienced with migration. Objective: This study sought to identify education and training needs of university health service providers regarding transgender patient care. Transgender patients are a vulnerable population who tend to have negative health outcomes. Limited information exists regarding transgender patients and their providers at student university health services nationally.

Methods: The researcher conducted a one hour semi-structured focus group with the professional staff at a Midwestern state university health service. The focus group conversation was guided by a list of prepared questions but other issues were allowed to arise. Two readers qualitatively analyzed the focus group transcripts for predominant themes.

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s Vaccines for Children (VFC) Program, which provides the majority of childhood immunizations, has been in existence for over 20 years. The CDC also created the Immunization Information Systems (IIS) program in which states were allocated funding to create statewide immunization databases. The goal was to maintain a reliable immunization tracking system to keep children on schedule and avoid unnecessary immunizations. Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate school nurses’ perspectives related to interprofessional collaboration to support health promotion and development of self-management skills of students with diabetes.

Method: A link to an on-line survey was sent to 312 school nurses. The survey included 11 items pertaining to the nurses’ perceptions.

Results: The majority of the respondents (91.8%, n = 56) reported that instruction and maintenance of diabetes self-management skills would benefit from an interprofessional team. Few of the respondents (20.8%, n = 11) identified occupational therapy practitioners as possible collaborators. Nearly two-thirds (62.7%, n = 37) of the …

Malignant hyperthermia is known as a pharmacogenetic disorder which manifests itself in the skeletal muscle (Heytens, Forget, Scholtès, & Veyckemans, 2015). When a susceptible patient, who carries the autosomal dominant trait, is exposed to volatile anesthetics and/or the neuromuscular blocker succinylcholine, a detrimental response can occur. This response is a hypermetabolic state with hypercapnia, hemodynamic instability, rigidity, hyperthermia, and signs of rhabdomyolysis (Heytens et al., 2015).
