The purposes of this dissertation were to examine trends from 2008 to 2014 in mental health and substance use disorders and treatment receipt, and explore factors associated with treatment receipt in pregnant women aged 18-44 years in the United States. A systematic review showed that illicit drug use disorder increased in pregnant women over the past decade. Despite the increase in treatment admissions for these disorders from 1992 to 2012, the overall treatment admission rate for pregnant women remained relatively stable (4%). Among more recent Hispanic immigrants, limited English proficiency and immigration status are barriers to health information and healthcare access. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the U.S. public’s attitude toward and knowledge of lung cancer screening per the U.S. Preventative Task Force’s (USPSTF) 2013 guideline. A questionnaire addressing cancer screening perception, lung cancer risk perception, and agreeability to lung cancer screening and surgical resection of detected lung cancer was adapted from Flynn, Peters, and Morgan (2013). The electronic questionnaire was posted to the primary investigator’s Facebook page and snowball sampling was employed. Of the 92 eligible adult respondents, 40% were current or former smokers and 3.3% were eligible for lung cancer screening. The majority of participants believed …

Background: Adverse patient events have been linked to communication errors during handoff. The Joint Commission has estimated that 65% of adverse patient events are associated with issues in communication. This, coupled with mandated electronic medical record (EMR) adoption in 2009, has complicated the implementation of effective handoffs. Many EMR systems are ill equipped to provide effective handoff tools, leading to staff non-compliance and a system of varied handoff procedures.

The purpose of this Participatory Action Research (PAR) study was to discover ways to enhance well-being in young adults with DD and older adults in the Oak Grove community. This dissertation details how PAR was used in the Oak Grove community to identify ways to enhance purpose and meaningful activity for older adults while developing positive relationships with younger adults with DD through qualitative methods.

Asthma is a chronic condition with periods of acute exacerbation. It is a commonly encountered problem across many care settings. Airway inflammation and hyper-responsiveness are associated with a number of different pre-disposing factors, and attacks are often triggered by specific agents. Advanced practice nurses must be familiar with the pathophysiology of this condition, and have a strong understanding of the interventions and treatments that are indicated. The intention of this poster is to enlighten students with regards to acute asthma exacerbation and the associated pathophysiology and treatment, ultimately leading to more competent care.
