Background: Fall injury is a leading cause of death and disability among older adults (Alamgir, 2012). Fall injury may result in fractures, infection and fear of movement. By reinforcing engagement in muscles used during balance and walking, seniors may avoid unnecessary falls within their homes and the community.

Setting/Target Population: West Marin is the largest rural area of Marin County, California and includes seven unincorporated communities. A large percentage of the elderly population who reside in West Marin live alone--thus suffering from isolation. This presentation will cover the relationship between the concepts of decreased self-efficacy in pregnant women’s abilities to deliver their babies vaginally, fear of the pain and duration of labor process, and the acceptance of medical intervention without sufficient intrapartum education surrounding delivery methods. These interrelated variables impede the concept of informed choice. The current state of the problem surrounds women with low self-efficacy who are predicted to have negative childbirth experiences such as, consenting to an astronomically high rate of cesarean sections. Adolescents with sickle cell anemia experience chronic pain related to vaso-occlusive crises. Once the symptoms start, they will, “persist throughout life, and there is no cure” (Atoui, 2015, p. 425). Despite the increasing number of men choosing nursing as a profession, they often face discrimination in this predominantly female profession (Roth & Coleman, 2008). Peer review is described as a best practice in assessing professional competence for all levels of nurses. However, barriers exist in implementing peer review among nurses in leadership roles. Nurse leaders have limited interactions to observe how others manage their units making assessment of professional competence difficult. A gap analysis of peer review in an acute care hospital revealed a need to revise the peer review program for nurse leaders. Students and faculty can be the perpetrator or the recipient of uncivil behaviors. Incivility can also have a negative effect on patient safety and the clinical outcomes for patients. Because of these issues, it is imperative that schools of nursing implement measures to educate and promote a culture of civility in the next generation of professional nurses.

The purpose of this study was to determine the level of cultural competence (CC) in Texas pre-licensure nursing faculty and examine the relationships between demographics and CC scores. The researchers conducted a study to determine if demographics predicted the level of CC and explored the perceptions of CC. A convergent parallel mixed-methods design used data from a 2014 online survey with a qualitative interview component. Demographics were evaluated with descriptive statistics and CC was measured with The Nurses’ Cultural Competence Scale (NCCS). Qualitative data were analyzed using a constant comparative method. However, a study shows that baccalaureate nursing students experience higher levels of stress as well as higher levels of physiological and psychological symptoms than students in other health-related disciplines (Beck et al., 1997). Hypertension is a major problem in the United States. It is critical to identify effective strategies to treat and manage hypertension. An experimental design was utilized to determine the effectiveness of home-based blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) in the management of prehypertension, newly diagnosed, or uncontrolled hypertension. A randomized convenience sample of 20 adults was recruited into a control (n=9) and experimental (n=11) group. The translational care project was conducted over 60 days where participants measured their blood pressures as instructed for the intervention and control groups. The present literature review examined data from 10 studies that examined the benefits of pet therapy and well-being. Florence Nightingale, a pioneer of nursing, recognized these benefits in the early 1800s when she used animals to provide support to mentally ill patients. Since then, pets, but mainly dogs, have been used across various populations and in numerous settings such as with geriatrics in nursing homes, in disaster relief, with war veterans suffering from PTSD, with inmates in correctional facilities, with terminal patients in hospice care, and with pediatric patients in the hospital setting. Background: Family members of children hospitalized in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) can develop cognitive, psychological, and physical manifestations of post-intensive care syndrome (PICS). Targeted education to help parents/caregivers recognize the signs and symptoms of PICS may result in better awareness of the syndrome and greater willingness to seek and receive support during their child’s PICU admission.

Objective: to evaluate three targeted PICS educational interventions to increase PICS awareness among parents/caregivers in the St. Louis Children’s Hospital (SLCH) PICU.

Background: There has been a significant amount of research into the many challenges that nurse practitioners (NPs) face as they transition from school to practice, however, there is limited research on how to improve this transition. Regardless of the setting in which the NPs are working, novices NPs alike report feelings of being unprepared and experiencing high levels of stress, anxiety, fear, and frustration. New research suggests that a comprehensive NP orientation and residency programs may provide a way to integrate the new NPs into their practice environment successfully.

The Qualitative Report

This meta-synthesis explored the effect of bridging programs on internationally educated nurses (IENs). Eight papers that met the inclusion criteria were selected for this review. There were 437 participants from eight studies who come from different parts of the globe and who settled in either Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom. Using a grounded theory approach for data analysis, four effects of bridging programs on IENs were identified.
