Background: Accurate prognosis is vital to the initiation of advance care planning particularly in a vulnerable, at risk population such as care home residents. The aim of this paper is to report on the revision and simplification of the MDS Mortality Rating Index (MMRI) for use in clinical practice to predict the probability of death in six months for care home residents.

Methods: The design was a secondary analysis of a US Minimum Data Set (MDS) for long term care residents using regression analysis to identify predictors of mortality within six months.

Nursing education is a complex combination of classroom and clinical instruction. The clinical portion is usually divided into the pre-clinical conference, direct care, and the post-clinical conference. Many goals are listed in the literature as learning outcomes for the post-clinical conference. The purpose of this study was to describe the most important goals, meaning, rationale, and preparation for the post-clinical conference by clinical nursing instructors in associate degree and baccalaureate degree programs.

Significance: Nurses facing impediments to what they perceive as moral practice may experience inner turmoil, frustration, and moral distress. These scenarios may culminate in resignation from employment at the individual level, increased attrition at the systems level, and poor patient outcomes, including increased morbidity and mortality.

Background: Depressive symptomology is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Over 15% of persons with cardiovascular disease have depressive symptoms, and women are twice as likely to experience these symptoms as men. Depressive symptoms in women “ at risk ” for cardiovascular disease has not been well studied.

This double blinded placebo controlled pilot study examined the use of combined inhaled medication for patients with moderate-to-severe COPD. The inhalation of formoterol versus placebo was studied when combined with the routine use of tiotropium. Maximizing bronchodilitation through the use of combination inhaler therapy is felt to be superior to the use of a single inhaled medication, yet few studies are found in the literature. Currently the Global Initiative for Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) recommends the use of combination inhaled therapy in patients with moderate-to-severe COPD. Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for children under 14 years of age. Of the unintentional injuries, a significant portion occurs within the home setting. Creating a safe home environment for children has become a focus in current efforts for health promotion and injury prevention. Our objective is to enhance caregivers’ knowledge of home safety thus decreasing the incidence of childhood unintentional injuries. The National Association of School Nurses advocates for body mass index (BMI) screening. Little research describes school nurse practice of BMI screening. In this descriptive study, 25 Ohio school nurses participated in three focus groups. An adapted Healthy People 2010 Determinants of Health Model guided the research questions. School nurses engaged in multiphasic data collection which was contingent on physical environment, workload, and referrals. The Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) is a master-prepared generalist accountable for patient outcomes through application of evidenced-based practice at the microsystem level. Accelerated nursing programs are educating entry level nurses as CNLs in a novel Model C program. This doctoral project evaluates entry-level master’s CNL graduates with the CNL end-of-program competencies to determine whether these graduates are able to have positive effects on patient, systems, and leadership outcomes in clinical settings.

The purpose of this study is to determine the dependability and accuracy of Clinical Performance in Nursing Examination (CPNE®) scores obtained from trained raters. Intraclass correlations were calculated to estimate interrater agreement. Accuracy of scores was determined by identifying percent accuracy for each scored element. Generalizability (G) coefficients were calculated to estimate sources of variance in CPNE scores. People at highest risk for inadequate pain control include indigent adults and minorities.
