Pediatric Peanut Allergy Prevalence Review, Kaitlyn Lynch
Pediatric Peanut Allergy Prevalence Review, Kaitlyn Lynch
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Abstract
Background: The rates of childhood allergies are increasing, prompting the need for continued research. The specific immune reaction to the allergen, peanuts, is the highest reported food allergy in children. The gap in knowledge is regarding the reasons behind the increased prevalence rates and the discrepancies in recommended guidelines for infant introduction of peanuts.
Purpose of Study: The review of studies narrowed down the reasons for prevalence and combined the current research into one integrative review. Additionally, the research standardized protocol recommendations for the early introduction of peanuts in infancy. The integrative review consolidated recent research on peanut prevalence …

Factors Associated With The Rise In Repeat Cesarean Deliveries, Danielle Walczak
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Abstract
Background: Women choose elective repeat cesarean deliveries as opposed to vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC’s) based on various reasons and these choices are most often made without adequate education from healthcare professionals.
Objectives: The purpose of this integrative literature review is to determine why there is a continuing rise in elective repeat cesareans and whether women in the United States are being routinely informed of VBAC’s based off of their decision for the mode of delivery.
Method: An integrative literature review was conducted using the databases of CINAHL, PubMed, ProQuest Nursing and Allied Health, and other studies from journals …

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Abstract
Background: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are the most common yet completely preventable cause of mental disability in the western world.
Objective: The purpose of this integrative literature review is to examine and identify the common elements among varying interventions for FASD prevention that have demonstrated effectiveness for reducing the risk of FASD to better understand what defining features may contribute to the efficacy of the interventions.
Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted. The databases searched included: CINAHL, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Science Direct. Articles were then reviewed to determine if they were appropriate for inclusion based upon …
The Effects Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine Therapies On Cognition In Older Adults Diagnosed With Mild Cognitive Impairment: An Integrative Literature Review, Candance Swanigan
The Effects Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine Therapies On Cognition In Older Adults Diagnosed With Mild Cognitive Impairment: An Integrative Literature Review, Candance Swanigan
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Background: The aging U.S. population is expected to produce a significant increase in persons with progressive cognitive impairment or dementia. A method to prevent, halt, or slow this decline has yet to be found. Research suggests that a multidomain approach in the early stages of impairment, such as in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) should be investigated as an integrative strategy to prevent cognitive decline. Complementary and alternative therapies have the ability to be a part of an integrative approach to preventing cognitive decline.
Objectives: The purpose of study is to explore what research has been conducted regarding complementary and alternative …

Implementation And Compliance With A Goal-Directed Fluid Therapy (Gdft) Protocol For Total Hip Arthroplasties: A Two-Year Review, Michelle Pavlik
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Background: Historically, goal-directed fluid therapy (GDFT) has been shown to improve patient outcomes when used in the perioperative setting for specific cases (colorectal, etc). When anesthesia providers use GDFT protocols, intraoperative fluid therapy is” patient specific” via the use of dynamic patient-specific physiologic parameters.
Objectives: The aim of the study is to assess whether GDFT improved patient-specific fluid administration. A secondary aim was to assess adherence to the instated GDFT protocol.
Method: A retrospective chart review was conducted on 201 patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) procedures following implementation of a GDFT protocol at the University of Illinois at Chicago …
Food Assistant Programs’ Food Quality And The Risk Of Developing Type Ii Diabetes In Native Americans, Ignacio Perez Jr
Food Assistant Programs’ Food Quality And The Risk Of Developing Type Ii Diabetes In Native Americans, Ignacio Perez Jr
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Abstract
Background: A key factor behind the high rates of diabetes among Native Americans living in reservations is the high poverty rate. Though food assistance is provided on reservations to combat poverty and food insecurity, the rates of type II diabetes are still at an alarming high rate. Continuation of the alarming incidence of type II diabetes brings to question the nutritional quality of the food offered by food assistance programs.
Objectives: The purpose of study was to examine food assistance programs utilized by Native Americans to determine if the food quality may have an impact on the risk of …

Complex Effects of Caregiver-Patient Relationships on Patient Self-Care in Heart Failure
Lauren Spain-Bondi
Faculty Advisor: Karen Larimer, PhD, RN
Background: Approximately 6.5 million U.S. adults have heart failure (HF), and the incidence is rising rapidly. HF is a costly disease with a high mortality rate. Despite evidence that patient self-care improves health and reduces hospitalizations, many still do not practice effective self-care. An informal caregiver for a patient with HF is positioned to influence self-care, but little is known about the patient/caregiver dynamic or how it affects self-care.
Objective: This study seeks to synthesize and evaluate the most …
