Andrea Ohmer, MS
Advisor: Dr. Elizabeth Hartman, RN
Abstract
Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease affecting the joints, often leading to pain, permanent tissue damage, and joint deformity. First Trimester Screening For Preeclampsia And Prevention With Aspirin Prophylaxis, Kathryn Starzyk
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Abstract
Background: Preeclampsia is a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy affecting multiple organ systems complicating 2-8% of pregnancies. It is defined as new-onset hypertension and proteinuria, or hypertension and significant end-organ dysfunction, typically presenting after 20 weeks of gestation. It is caused by placental and maternal vascular dysfunction and resolves with delivery of the fetus. Maternal and fetal/placental factors have been studied for their ability to aid in the early detection of preeclampsia.
Objectives: The purpose of this literature review was to determine if early screening and detection of preeclampsia would allow for appropriate clinical management and pharmacological prophylaxis interventions to …
Utilizing Phototherapy For Wound Healing In Nursing Practice: An Integrative Literature Review, Desiree Donovan
Utilizing Phototherapy For Wound Healing In Nursing Practice: An Integrative Literature Review, Desiree Donovan
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Background: Foot ulcers are a major concern in diabetic patients with an estimated 25% of this population developing diabetic neuropathy. The current treatments do not directly address reestablishing the integrity of the microvascular circulation which would decrease wound healing time and the expense of wound care.
Objectives: To examine the possible benefits of utilizing phototherapy as an adjunct treatment to improve diabetic wound outcomes in nursing practice.
Methods: Three data bases were searched: CINAHL Complete, PubMed, and Health Source Nursing and Academic Edition. The search terms were as follows: light therapy, wound healing, low level light therapy, and diabetic …

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Background: General practice healthcare providers may not fully utilize all available subtle clinical cues (physical/behavioral signs and symptoms) when screening for diabetes, or when assessing for suboptimal control of glucose homeostasis.
Objectives: To assess the prevalence and utility of incorporating diabetic clinical cues into routine physical assessments and questionnaires of individuals with type 2 diabetes, and to compile a comprehensive list and questionnaire using clinical cues.
Methods: Utilizing the databases CINAHL Complete, PubMed, and Academic Search Complete, an integrative literature review of 78 studies was conducted using the key terms type 2 diabetes and clinical manifestations of diabetes. …

Language Barriers And Their Effects On The Latino Patient An Integrative Review, Yesenia Romero
Language Barriers And Their Effects On The Latino Patient An Integrative Review, Yesenia Romero
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Abstract
The United States has many immigrants that have not yet mastered the language, causing them to have limited English proficiency (LEP). For some, this may not be a problem, but for those with medical issues it can be. Having LEP causes there to be a language barrier between the patient and healthcare worker, making it difficult to communicate. A lack of holistic care can occur when healthcare professionals does not speak the same language as their patients. Consequently, this lack of care can lead to an array of concerns. The purpose of this integrative review was to gather current …
