Background: While Providence began the HRO journey in 2015, the Northern California region didn’t launch until March 2022. While most leaders and caregivers have been trained, several still have difficulty remembering and applying the HRO principles and tools. The HRO Vlog provides a series of short videos that not only reinforce the various high reliability principles, but also provides real-life stories of caregivers who have successfully applied HRO principles and tools in their daily work. Improving Emergency Department Belongings Inventory Electronic Medical Record Documentation Rates Background: Electronic Medical Record (EMR) education and training for RNs should be multifaceted and targeted to the RN clinical workflow. Input from direct care RNs is essential to ensure EMR education is relevant and effective. Shared Governance at a community hospital identified quality and safety concerns among inpatient RNs. RNs reported that belongings inventories were not consistently documented in the EMR for Emergency Department (ED) admissions. Hospital policy requires belongings inventory EMR documentation for all admitted patients. An audit of charts for ED admissions over three months revealed only 5% …

Infusion Nurses’ Personal Protective Equipment Use While Handling Chemotherapy Drugs Purpose: To describe perceived barriers, perceived risks, interpersonal influence (modeling and norms), perceived conflict of interest, and organizational influences and select demographics related to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) use for out-patient, oncology infusion nurses. Background: The proper use of PPE should be common practice among nurses who administer chemotherapy. However, despite training and education, many studies have demonstrated that infusion nurses’ PPE adherence is as low as 50%. Improper PPE use can increase exposure to chemotherapy and has potential adverse health effects including fertility issues and risks of cancer. Few …

Background: In the United States 700,000 to 1,000,000 people fall in the hospital annually, 1/3 result in injury. One single fall averages $14,000, resulting in an increase in hospital length of stay and burden on hospital budget. In St. Joseph Hospital of Orange, from calendar year 2019 to 2020, there was an increase in falls from 178 to 185 falls, despite the use of a telesitter. At time of data collection, 12 telesitter cameras were initiated after a fall. An investigation was deemed necessary to determine the cause of the increase and the factors related to patient falls.

Background:

In one region including 4 hospitals, acute care nurses historically met with professional development practitioners (PDP) and received binders containing printed, specialty-specific policies and a competency checklist (required to be signed and returned to the nurse leader) upon new hire or transfer. Creating physical orientation packets is costly, time-consuming, and restricts the ability to share appropriate orientation materials in the event of a PDP sick call. Real-time communication between the orientee, preceptor, PDP, and nurse leader regarding status of the competency checklist cannot occur with a physical binder. Providing electronic onboarding materials is a potential solution.

Development of a RN Clinical Coach program to improve retention of ICU residents and fellows

Background:
The COVID-19 pandemic caused contributed to significant increases in ICU nurse turnover. To restore the ICU nursing workforce and rebuild a healthy work environment, evidence-based strategies are needed to provide social support and ongoing clinical skills development for large cohorts of ICU residents and fellows.

Background: Oncology navigation programs have evolved to include services for addressing cancer care barriers, focusing on care coordination, patient experience, and care value, and may include nurses, social workers, and non-licensed trained workers as care navigators. The 2023 Enhancing Oncology Payment Model (EOPM) requires navigation services and emphasizes improving care value and outcomes. Effective healthcare navigation and collaboration can improve value by reducing care duplication, missed appointments, and emergency admissions; identifying and addressing health-related social needs; addressing health inequities; and improving time-to-treatment initiation and patient retention.
