Abstract:

Background: Healthcare organizations pursuing the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet® Award must assess the educational needs of Registered Nurses and develop relevant educational offerings that positively affect patient outcomes. Challenges include collecting survey response rates, report build time, and accessible of reports to those responsible for the education. Four hospitals in the Pacific Northwest used electronic workflows to disseminate the educational needs of acute care nurses by unit, specialty, and role with improved analysis of data. Incorporating a learning platform for survey distribution increased the response rate from 15% to 70% over 3 years. The valid response rate …

Background: In the United States (U.S.), there are over 4.1 million registered nurses and 60% work in acute care to treat hospitalized patients. On average, the nursing workforce is female, Caucasian, and approximately 49 years old. Only 60% of U.S. nurses report a bachelor’s degree education or higher. Compared to other licensed care professionals, nurses suffer higher prevalence of obesity and are high risk for metabolic diseases which may negatively impact their occupational and physical wellbeing. Nursing night shift work is essential in the hospital yet is linked to negative outcomes such as cardiometabolic illnesses including type 2 diabetes. Short-term studies (lasting a few days) of simulated night shift work have identified night-time decreases in insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance as potential causes of negative cardiometabolic health outcomes. Background: Acute care nurses are essential to preserve quality and quantity of life of hospitalized patients. However, nurses present with a higher risk of type II diabetes compared to other licensed healthcare providers, especially if assigned to night shifts, despite controlling for modifiable lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise. Background

From 2022-2023, a 28-bed cardiac care intensive unit (CICU) employing 120 Registered Nurses (RNs) hired 63 RNs, including 3 new graduates and 32 new-to-specialty, following significant turnover. Nurses in the CICU frequently face complex situations, leading to emotional distress and potential turnover if coping resources are not provided. Research suggests that pairing a new CICU nurse with an experienced mentor to help cope with complex situations can significantly increase confidence and resiliency and reduce emotional distress and turnover. Title: Implementing a Mentorship Program on a Medical/Oncology Unit Background: New-to-specialty acute care nurses are generally assigned a preceptor to demonstrate complex competencies within 90 days of hire. However, providing inpatient nursing care presents psychosocial stressors not well-addressed by preceptors which can contribute to burnout and turnover. Participating in a mentorship program addressing psychosocial nursing stressors following competency-focused preceptorship may reduce burnout and turnover. A medical-oncology unit of a 200-bed urban hospital lacked a mentorship program and Unit-Based Council (UBC) members worked to implement and evaluate this resource. Healthcare operations are estimated to generate up to 29lbs of waste per patient per day (Practice Greenhealth, 2022). Waste contributes significantly to healthcare’s carbon emissions, which in turn contributes to the growing climate crisis (Karliner et al., 2019, Healthcare Without Harm, 2019; World Health Organization, 2018). This project was to evaluate the impact of “Brain Day,” a targeted multidisciplinary continuing education (CE) class that utilized in-person teaching to promote engagement and satisfaction among nurses in a progressive care unit (PCU).

Improving Emergency Department Belongings Inventory Electronic Medical Record Documentation Rates Background: Electronic Medical Record (EMR) education and training for RNs should be multifaceted and targeted to the RN clinical workflow. Input from direct care RNs is essential to ensure EMR education is relevant and effective. Shared Governance at a community hospital identified quality and safety concerns among inpatient RNs. RNs reported that belongings inventories were not consistently documented in the EMR for Emergency Department (ED) admissions.
