Barriers To The Administration Of The Influenza Vaccine, Lauren Babb, Heather Bishop, Carrie Dozier, Renea Hopple, Hannah Marlin, Jennifer Sartin

MSN Research Projects

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that since 2010 influenza has caused between 9.2 million and 60.8 million illnesses. Numbers from the 2015-2016 influenza season indicate that influenza vaccination prevented approximately 5.1 million influenza illnesses. Though most healthy individuals recover from the flu within 2 weeks, there is great concern for those who do not as this can lead to serious complications. Vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, children, pregnant women and individuals with chronic disease that contract influenza, are at risk for more severe illnesses such as sinus infections or bacterial pneumonia. Influenza can lead to …

The World Health Organization states antimicrobial resistance is the ability of a microorganism to stop an antimicrobial from working which results in ineffective treatment and persistent infections. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2017) reported that in the year 2015, 269.4 million antibiotic prescriptions were written in the outpatient setting, and approximately 30% of antibiotics written are unwarranted. Of those cases, most patients receive an antibiotic related to acute uncomplicated bronchitis, pharyngitis, or rhinosinusitis. The CDC reported that Americans spend nearly $11 billion yearly on antibiotics alone. However, up to 50% of all antibiotics prescribed are not indicated …

Hypertension is a widespread disease process and well-known risk factor for coronary artery disease, stroke, heart failure, and renal failure. Proper diagnosis and treatment of hypertension is crucial to reducing these adverse patient outcomes. The Eighth Joint National Committee (JNC 8) released their most recent guidelines of the diagnosis and management of hypertension in December 2013 with implementation to take effect in January 2014. The JNC 8 guidelines of hypertension include the following: proper diagnosis of hypertension (>140/90 for patients < 60 years of age and those with diabetes and/or chronic kidney disease and >150/90 in patients > 60 years of age), lifestyle modifications to be initiated with every hypertensive patient, and newly diagnosed …

MSN Research Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine primary care providers’ adherence to USPSTF (2015), and the Alzheimer’s Association’s (2013) recommendations and guidelines advocating annual cognitive impairment screening on patients ages 65 years and older. The Alzheimer’s Association issued an algorithm for detecting cognitive impairment in older adults; this cognitive assessment algorithm was accepted and mandated by U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services during annual wellness visits of patients 65 years and older. In addition to the Alzheimer’s Association, USPSTF acknowledges the increasing prevalence of cognitive impairment and the benefits of early detection. However, USPSTF argues a lack o …

In an effort to identify a population possibly responsible for the underutilization of hospice care and services in northeast Mississippi, the student researcher compared the average perceptions among healthcare professionals and the general public. Having anticipated there was a significant difference between the averages of the two populations, the student researcher tested a null hypothesis that there was no statistically significant difference between the average perceptions of hospice care among healthcare professionals and the general public in northeast Mississippi. The two 37-member sample populations were formed using convenience sampling and were asked to complete a survey of knowledge and opinion-based …

Opioid And Naloxone Prescribing Practices In Mississippi, Rebecca Brown, Brittany Clayton, Alissa Damiens, Natalie Keyes, Gary A. Mcpherson, Anna E. Wiygul

MSN Research Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine whether primary care providers (PCPs) in Mississippi are following the selected Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines published in March 2016 for prescribing opioids for chronic, non-cancer pain. Drug overdoses have increased exponentially in the last 3 decades in the United States (Doyon, Aks, & Schaeffer, 2014) — leading to opioid overdose becoming the most frequent cause of accidental death. Opioid overdose death rates are so high the CDC declared it a problem of …

Cognitive impairment is one of the predominant diagnoses that in its early stages remain undetected in the primary healthcare setting. With Alzheimer's and dementia on the rise, it is paramount that cognitive impairment be detected promptly so preventative measures may be initiated to slow or avert progression of this dreaded disease. The annual wellness visit, a Medicare benefit added by the Affordable Care Act of 2010, recommends primary care providers conduct a screening to detect cognitive impairment during the course of this assessment. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services failed to recommend a specific screening tool to be utilized …

Knowledge And Beliefs Of Parents Of Young Athletes Regarding Sports-Related Overuse Injuries, Kathryn C. Carroll Aug 2017

Knowledge And Beliefs Of Parents Of Young Athletes Regarding Sports-Related Overuse Injuries, Kathryn C. Carroll

MSN Research Projects

Overuse injuries in the pediatric population constitute a substantial healthcare problem. Approximately 50% of pediatric sports-related injuries occur from overuse (McLeod et al., 2011). Although overuse injuries are not associated with direct mortality, the morbidity of these injuries is significant (Laker, Strum, & Sullivan, 2015). Research has shown that these injuries can be prevented by early recognition and diligent efforts by those that influence a child’s health (McLeod et al., 2011). Parental knowledge and intentionality are vital to the prevention of overuse injuries in children. Researchers administered a descriptive, quantitative survey to parents of young athletes ages 5 to 18 …
