Background: Missed nursing care is defined as any lapse in essential patient care. It is a previously studied, persistent phenomenon. If unrecognized, it can compromise patients’ recoveries, trigger adverse events, and increase healthcare costs.
Objectives: To examine the prevalence of missed nursing care reported by medical-surgical registered nurses (RNs) and contributing factors for its occurrence.
Methods: The project used a cross-sectional, correlational design. A convenience sample of 96 RNs, recruited from three medical-surgical units, completed the MISSCARE Survey between September and October 2017. Background: Peer to peer review is the most essential form of peer review as it encourages nurses to evaluate the quality, safety, and effectiveness of nursing care amongst peers. Poor communication skills for providing feedback during peer review is a barrier identified in the literature, which can be addressed in professional development training.

Background: Simulation based education offers safe, reflective learning opportunities. However, data had not been obtained of nursing students’ perceptions of teamwork performed during Virtual Hospital (VH), a multiple patient simulation.
Objectives: This evaluation gap was addressed using the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ) TeamSTEPPS® Teamwork Perceptions Questionnaire (T-TPQ). The validated survey measures self-reported perceptions of teamwork in communication, mutual support, and situational awareness on a Likert scale from 1 to 5 (AHRQ, 2014).

A new clinical residency education model was developed and implemented in response to a family nurse practitioner program’s difficulty in securing and maintaining qualified preceptors and clinical sites for students in the program, and a community hospital’s shortage of nurse practitioners for their rural healthcare clinics. This Doctor of Nursing Practice project conducted an evaluation on this new model. The evaluation results showed that the clinical residency model met standards of nurse practitioner education, incorporated nursing leader recommendations for new clinical models, and proved to be an effective model for clinical education.

The addition of Nurse Practitioners (NPs) on the trauma service at night was examined to see if it has positively impacted healthcare utilization and satisfaction in trauma patients. This four-month evidence-based, quasi-experimental project took place on the Trauma Medical Surgical Unit (TMSU) at a level II trauma center in California. Retrospective analysis of medical records and Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) satisfaction surveys were performed for those trauma patients located on the TMSU 60-days prior to NPs starting at night and 60-days after. The use of a Time Out checklist for patient safety in non-operating room procedural areas is equally important for positive patient outcomes as in the operating room (OR). In this busy southwestern United States hospital, the procedural teams in the non-operating room areas were reported to not be fully engaged during the performance of the Time Out pre-procedural pause prior to gastroenterological (GI) procedures. This paper explores the use of the Coleman Transition Model as an evidenced based intervention to reduce 30-day readmissions of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients on a pulmonary unit. Nearly 20% of Medicare beneficiaries are re-hospitalized within 30 days after discharge, resulting in an annual cost of approximately $17 billion. Hospitals can engage in activities to lower their rate of readmissions. The evidenced based intervention includes robust case management using The Coleman Transition Model in hospitalized COPD patients to reduce readmissions. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess nurse manager span of control in medical- surgical, intermediate care, and progressive care units at Norton Healthcare and determine correlations between nurse manager span of control and employee engagement.
METHODS: For this descriptive, correlational study, the researcher analyzed data to identify relationships in span of control and employee engagement data for 19 nurse managers leading 23 inpatient care units. Application of mechanical restraints is a high-risk emergency measure that requires psychiatric intensive care in order to assure patient safety and expedite release at the earliest opportunity. While current regulations require that trained staff continuously observe restrained individuals, assessment by a registered nurse is required only once an hour. BACKGROUND: In order to serve as full partners on the interdisciplinary health care team: nurses at all levels must develop essential leadership competencies Organizations need to identify the essential leadership competencies required for bedside nursing staff and develop programs to enhance these competencies. PURPOSE: The purpose of this evaluation project was to determine the effectiveness of the Norton Healthcare new graduate nurse residency program on retention and engagement of newly- licensed registered nurses.
METHODS: This study was a retrospective pre-test, post-test design of the impact of the nurse residency program on turnover and engagement for the participants in the first year of the Norton Healthcare Nurse Residency Program. PURPOSE: The purpose of this project is to develop an evidence-based organizational fatigue climate assessment to understand the current culture as it relates to nurse fatigue. This study includes the use of a fatigue measurement scale and the development of a fatigue reduction educational program for nurse managers.
METHODS: Using a cross-sectional survey design, data assessing organizational climate and actual fatigue levels among nurses employed at Saint Joseph East Hospital was obtained through an electronic questionnaire.
